Chapter 3

The night was still, save for the occasional crackle of the fire Claude had built. Lunaclaire sat just outside the cave, her knees drawn up to her chest, her silver hair falling like a curtain around her face. The faint moonlight illuminated her features, casting soft shadows on her skin, but it did little to ease the storm of thoughts racing through her mind. The fire’s warm glow did nothing to chase away the coldness that had settled deep within her heart. She had always thought of herself as strong, capable—yet now, she felt broken, lost, and betrayed.

Sleep had long since abandoned her, her thoughts too tangled in the betrayal she had endured. Her mate, the one she had trusted with her heart, had turned on her so easily. Her pack, the family she had sworn to protect, had abandoned her without question. The rejection, the lies, and the coldness of Raphael’s words played over and over in her mind, like a cruel song she couldn’t escape. Her hands trembled as she hugged her knees tighter to her chest, trying to ground herself in the moment, but the weight of the world pressed down on her.

And then, just as her mind began to slip toward the dark abyss of hopelessness, something shifted. A scent—familiar, yet unwelcome—hit her nostrils. A scent that brought her back to the harsh reality she was trying to escape.

Voices carried on the wind, low and conspiratorial. Lunaclaire froze, her breath caught in her throat. Her sharp hearing had long been one of her greatest assets, and she knew without a doubt that the voices were coming from her former packmates.

“I still can’t believe she didn’t see it coming,” a woman’s voice whispered harshly, her words dripping with venom.

Lunaclaire’s blood ran cold, the knot in her stomach tightening as she crept closer, careful not to make a sound. She crouched low behind a thick cluster of bushes, her breath shallow, her heart pounding in her chest. The voices, now clearer, came from a group of wolves she had once called family.

“I know, right?” A man’s voice responded, filled with disbelief. “Two years! Two whole years, and she never suspected a thing. Makes you wonder how someone so blind could ever be our Luna.”

Lunaclaire clenched her jaw, her eyes stinging with the weight of the words. The people she had trusted—her pack—were mocking her. They were speaking about her as if she were nothing more than a fool, too blind to see the betrayal that had been happening right under her nose.

“She was so wrapped up in her ‘perfect mate bond,’” the woman continued, her tone dripping with disdain. “Meanwhile, Raphael and Serena were sneaking around right under her nose. Honestly, it’s pathetic.”

Lunaclaire’s heart shattered as the woman’s words sank in. Raphael, her mate, the one she had given her heart to, had been with Serena all along. It had never been about her. It had never been the love she had believed in. It had all been a lie.

A chorus of low chuckles followed, the sound like knives in her chest.

“Do you think she ever suspected?” the man asked, his voice low but mocking.

“Doubt it,” the woman scoffed. “She’s too naïve, too trusting. That’s why it was so easy to turn the pack against her. All we had to do was plant that map in her room and drop a few hints about her loyalty.”

Lunaclaire’s breath caught in her throat as the full realization hit her. The map—the evidence that had been used against her—it hadn’t been planted by chance. Her packmates had deliberately set her up, framing her for something she hadn’t done, for something she couldn’t even begin to understand.

“She was a liability,” another voice chimed in. “Half the pack might have supported her at first, but after the ‘evidence’ came out… well, let’s just say it didn’t take much to convince them she was unfit to lead.”

The cruel words cut through Lunaclaire like a thousand daggers. She had trusted them, fought for them, and this was how they repaid her. She had been nothing but a pawn in their game, discarded when she was no longer useful.

“And now Raphael has the Luna he truly deserves,” the woman added, her voice thick with smug satisfaction. “Serena’s strong, cunning, and she doesn’t crumble under pressure like Lunaclaire.”

Lunaclaire felt as though the ground beneath her was giving way, the weight of the betrayal almost too much to bear. She had been wrong about everything. Her bond with Raphael—so strong, so undeniable—had been nothing more than a mirage, a false hope. And now they were all laughing at her, relishing in her pain.

She gritted her teeth, trying to steady herself as the voices began to fade. The anger, the humiliation, the sadness—all of it twisted together inside her, threatening to overwhelm her. But one thing was clear now. She had been blind, yes. She had trusted when she shouldn’t have. But that was over. She wouldn’t let them control her anymore.

When the last of the voices finally disappeared, Lunaclaire stood up slowly, her legs shaky beneath her. She returned to the cave, her mind racing with the painful revelations she had just overheard. Claude was sitting by the fire, his golden eyes gleaming in the dim light, watching her with a quiet intensity.

“You heard something,” he said, his voice steady and calm.

Lunaclaire nodded, her jaw tight with barely contained fury. “The pack… they conspired against me. They planted the evidence, turned everyone against me, and mocked me for being blind to Raphael’s affair.”

Claude’s expression darkened, a flicker of anger crossing his usually composed face. He sat up straighter, his gaze hardening. “And now you know the truth,” he said. “What will you do with it?”

Lunaclaire stared into the fire, her heart heavy, but something deep inside her stirred. There was still a spark of hope, a glimmer of resolve that refused to be extinguished. “I’ll prove them wrong,” she said, her voice low but unwavering. “I’ll prove my innocence. And I’ll make them see that I’m not the weak, foolish Luna they think I am.”

Claude nodded, a slight smirk tugging at the corners of his lips. “Good,” he said. “Then let’s start by making sure you survive long enough to do that.”

For the first time in days, Lunaclaire felt something stir within her—a sense of purpose. She had been broken, betrayed, and humiliated, but she wouldn’t let it end this way. She would fight for her name, for her honor, and for the truth. The road ahead would be long and fraught with obstacles, but Lunaclaire was ready. She was no longer fighting for the pack she had loved; she was fighting for herself.
