Chapter 4

The morning sun filtered through the dense forest canopy, casting dappled patterns on the forest floor. Lunaclaire stood alone at the edge of a small clearing, her breath coming in shallow bursts. Her arms hung by her sides, sore and trembling from hours of relentless training. Sweat dripped down her brow, stinging her eyes, but she refused to stop. She couldn’t afford to. Not now, not after everything she’d lost.

Before her stood a massive pine tree, its trunk thick and sturdy, a silent witness to her frustration. Claude stood a few paces away, his arms crossed, his golden eyes sharp as they studied her every movement. There was an unspoken understanding between them—a connection forged not just by survival, but by the unyielding will to overcome.

“Again,” he said, his voice calm yet commanding.

Lunaclaire’s jaw tightened, and she nodded in silence. Her gaze never left the tree as she gathered what little strength she had left. Taking a deep breath, she swung her leg in a powerful kick, aiming directly at the tree’s base. The impact reverberated through her spine, but the tree stood unmoving. Her leg shook with the force of the blow, and a sharp pain shot through her muscles.

“Your form is improving,” Claude said, his voice unwavering. “But you’re still holding back.”

Lunaclaire wiped the sweat from her brow, frustration bubbling inside her. “I’m not holding back,” she spat, glaring at him, her teeth clenched.

“Yes, you are,” Claude replied evenly, his gaze never leaving her. “You’re too focused on what you’ve lost—your pack, your title, your wolf. You need to focus on what you still have: your determination.”

Lunaclaire’s fists clenched at her sides, and she felt the familiar sting of her wolf’s absence. She had once been a force to be reckoned with, her connection to her wolf a source of unparalleled strength. Now, it was nothing more than a hollow echo. Her wolf had withdrawn, refusing to answer her call, locked away behind an invisible wall she couldn’t break.

“I’m trying,” she muttered, her voice laced with frustration and desperation.

Claude studied her for a long moment, his expression unreadable. “I know you are,” he said softly. “But if you want to face your pack again, if you want revenge, you need to give it everything you’ve got.”

Lunaclaire’s breath hitched as his words settled in her chest. There was something in his voice—something that reached deep inside her and stirred the ashes of the woman she used to be. She wanted to be that woman again. She wanted to be strong, to be whole, to be worthy of something beyond the rejection and betrayal she had endured.

“Fine,” she said, her voice hardening. She straightened her back, squared her shoulders, and raised her leg again. “Again.”

The next few days were a blur of relentless training. Claude pushed her beyond her limits, his presence both a challenge and a steady force of support. He never allowed her to falter, never let her give in to the weight of her grief or self-doubt. And slowly, very slowly, Lunaclaire began to change.

Her body grew stronger. Her muscles, once weak from disuse, began to respond to the punishment. Her movements became sharper, more precise, the fluidity returning as she learned how to strike, how to fight, how to survive. But it wasn’t just her body that was transforming—her mind was sharpening too. The fog of despair that had clouded her thoughts began to lift. She was no longer consumed by anger and heartbreak. Instead, she was focused, determined.

And through it all, Claude remained by her side, offering guidance, challenging her, but never pushing too far. His quiet strength was a steadying presence in the midst of her turmoil. She had never relied on anyone before, had never needed anyone. But there was something about Claude—something that made her feel like she could trust him, that made her feel like she wasn’t as alone as she had been for so long.

One evening, after a particularly grueling training session, they sat side by side by a campfire, the crackling of the flames the only sound breaking the silence. Lunaclaire stared into the fire, the orange and red light flickering across her features, casting fleeting shadows across her face.

“Why are you doing this?” she asked suddenly, her voice soft but tinged with curiosity.

Claude glanced at her, his golden eyes thoughtful. “Doing what?”

“Helping me,” she said, her gaze flicking to his for the first time in what felt like forever. “Training me. Believing in me. You don’t even know me.”

For a long moment, Claude didn’t respond. His eyes stayed fixed on the fire, his expression unreadable. Lunaclaire felt a flicker of anxiety stir in her chest. She hadn’t expected an answer, but now that the question was out, she found herself wanting to know.

Finally, Claude spoke, his voice low and steady. “Maybe I see a little of myself in you,” he said quietly. “I know what it’s like to be cast out, to lose everything. But I also know what it’s like to fight back, to reclaim what’s yours. And I believe you can do the same.”

The words hit Lunaclaire harder than she expected. A tightness settled in her chest as she considered them. For the first time in a long time, someone saw her for more than just the broken Luna she had become. For the first time in what felt like forever, someone believed in her—not just as a symbol, but as a person.

“Thank you,” she whispered, her voice thick with emotion.

Claude looked at her then, his lips curling into a faint smile. “Don’t thank me yet,” he said, his voice teasing. “You’ve still got a long way to go.”

Despite his words, Lunaclaire couldn’t help the warmth that spread through her chest. For the first time in ages, she felt a spark of hope. It was small, fragile even, but it was enough to ignite a fire inside her.

As the days passed, their bond grew. Lunaclaire found herself relying on Claude more than she had anticipated. She began to believe in herself again, to see the possibility of victory on the horizon. The path ahead would be treacherous, and there was much to overcome. But with Claude by her side, she knew she wasn’t alone.

She wasn’t just a fallen Luna anymore.

She was a fighter.

And soon, she would take back everything they had stolen from her.
