Chapter 2

Lunaclaire’s breath came in ragged gasps as she stumbled through the thick underbrush of the forest. Her wolf, once strong and powerful, was now hurt and weak. The fight with her pack, the betrayal, had drained her—physically, emotionally, and spiritually. She could feel the ache in her chest, the sorrow of being cast out, and the pain in her limbs. Her wolf whimpered inside her mind, struggling to stay connected to her in their weakened state.

Every step she took felt heavier than the last, her body refusing to cooperate, her spirit beginning to crack under the pressure. The wind howled through the trees, a bitter reminder of her isolation.

She had been abandoned. Her pack had torn her apart, rejecting her and her wolf, the one being who was supposed to understand her completely. Lunaclaire had tried to fight it, tried to convince them that she could still be their Luna, but in the end, they turned their backs on her. Now, she was alone.

Her head spun, and the shadows of the forest seemed to close in around her. The scent of damp earth and moss filled the air, but it wasn’t enough to mask the feeling of dread that gripped her heart. She was vulnerable. Weak.

Suddenly, a rustle broke through the stillness. Lunaclaire froze, her heart skipping a beat. She turned, eyes darting through the shadows, trying to locate the source of the noise. Her senses were dulled, and she couldn’t make out the figures approaching her, but the air was thick with danger.

A rough laugh echoed from the trees, low and mocking. Her instincts screamed at her to run, but her body betrayed her, too exhausted and too hurt to move.

“Well, well,” a voice sneered. “What do we have here? A pretty little outcast, all alone in the woods. How convenient.”

Lunaclaire’s pulse quickened, her heart racing as the gang of rogues stepped into view. Their eyes glinted with malice, their movements predatory. They were wolves, but they had no pack, no loyalty—only the thirst for power and cruelty.

One of them stepped forward, a tall, broad-shouldered male with dirty, matted fur. His eyes narrowed as he took in Lunaclaire’s weakened state. “You’re in no condition to fight, little girl. I think it’s time someone put you in your place.”

Lunaclaire’s throat tightened as panic rose within her. She backed away slowly, but her legs trembled, and she was too weak to run.

“You think you can run from us?” another rogue sneered. His voice dripped with lustful intent as he moved closer, eyes focused on her with an eerie hunger. “You’re alone. No pack. No protection. You’re ours.”

Her mind raced, and her wolf fought against the restraints of her fading strength. Lunaclaire closed her eyes for a moment, trying to focus. But it was no use. The rogues advanced, their laughter filling the air. She was helpless, a prey that could only wait for the inevitable.

Just as one of them lunged at her, something exploded from the trees—fast, like a shadow, too fast for her to comprehend.

A massive black wolf, its fur gleaming in the moonlight with a streak of white running down its chest, leaped into the fray. The rogue was sent flying backward with a terrifying snarl. The power of the black wolf was overwhelming, and Lunaclaire could feel the force of its presence, even as she struggled to stay conscious.

The rogue pack froze, momentarily stunned, as the black wolf bared its teeth, growling low and menacingly. The air around them seemed to hum with the wolf’s dominance.

“You’re not touching her,” the black wolf growled, its voice vibrating through the forest like thunder.

Lunaclaire’s heart raced as she tried to make sense of the situation. Who was this wolf? Was it someone from her past? Her mind was clouded with confusion, but in the haze of her fear, she felt a glimmer of hope. The wolf stood its ground, defending her from the rogues, its muscles rippling with every movement.

The rogues backed away slowly, their eyes flicking between each other, wary of the powerful creature that had appeared so suddenly. After a tense moment, they retreated into the trees, vanishing into the night like shadows.

The black wolf stayed alert for a moment longer, watching the rogues disappear before its body relaxed, though its posture remained vigilant. It slowly turned toward Lunaclaire, who was still trembling from the encounter, her legs unsteady beneath her.

She could barely form words, her voice shaking as she finally spoke. “Who… Who are you?”

The black wolf stepped closer, its golden eyes gleaming with an intensity that sent a shiver down Lunaclaire’s spine. For a moment, she thought she saw recognition in those eyes—something familiar. But her mind was too foggy, too overwhelmed to make sense of it.

The wolf lowered its head in a way that seemed almost comforting, its presence commanding yet gentle. And then, as if the wolf could sense her need, it shifted. The transformation was swift—bones cracking, muscles shifting. Within moments, the wolf was gone, replaced by a tall man with short black hair, wearing a simple black jacket and jeans. His face was sharp, his jaw clenched, but his eyes were filled with something that Lunaclaire couldn’t quite place.

It was him. The man who had saved her.

He was Claude Brown.

Lunaclaire’s breath caught in her throat. She knew him—or at least knew of him. He was a lone wolf, known for his skills and strength. But more importantly, he was a man of mystery. A man who lived on the fringes, neither accepted by packs nor fully part of the rogue world.

Claude looked down at her, his expression softening ever so slightly as he reached out a hand to help her steady herself. She took it, her fingers trembling as she looked up at him.

“You’re safe now,” Claude said, his voice low, almost soothing. But Lunaclaire could see the storm of emotions swirling behind his calm facade.

She wanted to speak, to thank him, but the words caught in her throat. She was too exhausted, too hurt. Her body refused to cooperate.

“Rest,” Claude instructed gently, his voice warm despite the rough edges. “You don’t need to say anything. You’re safe now.”

Lunaclaire closed her eyes, her head spinning with everything that had just happened. She had been saved by a man—by Claude. And despite the chaos swirling around them, for the first time in what felt like forever, she didn’t feel completely alone.
