Chapter 2

"It's okay," Iris rasped, her voice terrifyingly hoarse and weak.

The nurse carefully removed the needle, applying pressure to the bruised, swollen skin with a cotton swab. She looked at Iris with a mixture of pity and concern. "Why are you here all alone? It's the middle of the night, and you don't have anyone with you to keep an eye on the drip... Oh, honey, why are you crying?"

Iris froze. She hadn't even realized. She reached up with her good hand and touched her cheek, her fingers coming away wet with warm tears.

She licked her cracked, dry lips and pointed to her swollen hand, offering a fragile excuse. "...It just hurts too much."

"I'm truly sorry," the nurse apologized again, her voice softening. She gently taped a new IV into Iris's other arm, adjusting the flow rate carefully. She tucked the thin, scratchy hospital blanket around Iris's shoulders, giving her a sympathetic pat before rushing off to her next patient.

Once alone in the quiet hum of the ward, Iris stared blankly at the stark white ceiling panels.

The pain in her hand was sharp, yes, but it wasn't actually enough to make her cry. She had endured far worse physical pain in her life. So why the tears?

Perhaps it was because, in that fleeting moment of vulnerability, all her carefully constructed walls of strength had finally shattered. The kindness of a stranger had highlighted the cruel absence of the man who was supposed to love her.

This wasn't the first time this had happened. Time and time again, in her moments of greatest need, Jayson had abandoned her to run to Fawn. Whether it was a flat tire, a family dinner, or a simple rainy afternoon, Fawn's needs always superseded Iris's existence.

Iris had reached her breaking point a long time ago; she just hadn't wanted to admit it.

She was twenty-four years old. She had spent her first sixteen years growing up alongside Jayson, relying on him after her parents died, and the last eight years loving him as a woman loves a man. She had loved him down to the very marrow of her bones.

But all that passionate devotion, all that youthful infatuation, had been reduced to a pathetic joke.

The clear fluid dripping slowly through the IV tube looked so weightless, yet every drop felt like a thousand pounds smashing into her chest, leaving her heart battered and riddled with holes.

She had accumulated enough disappointment for a lifetime. The bucket was full, and it was finally overflowing.

With a newfound, terrifying resolve that seemed to clear the last of the fever from her mind, Iris reached for her phone on the bedside table. She opened her chat with Jayson. The last message was from him, days ago, a brief "ok" to a paragraph she had written about the wedding caterer.

Her fingers hovered over the keyboard for a second before typing three simple words.

"Let's break up."

She hit send. She had expected to feel a crushing wave of sorrow, to dissolve into hysterical sobs, to feel the world ending. Instead, she felt an unexpected, profound sense of peace wash over her.

It was a release she couldn't quite put into words, like stepping out of a suffocating, smoke-filled room into the crisp night air.

Iris closed her eyes and, for the first time in months, fell into a deep, dreamless sleep, the steady beep of the heart monitor lulling her into unconsciousness.

She stayed in the hospital for just one day. Once her fever broke and her vitals stabilized, she checked herself out, ignoring the doctor's advice to stay for observation.

She hadn't even made it out of the hospital lobby, the automatic doors just sliding open to reveal the bright afternoon sun, when her phone rang. The caller ID showed "Aunt Patty Vazquez."

When Iris was eight, her parents had died in a tragic car accident. Her uncle's family had taken her in, and ever since, she had lived the precarious, emotionally starved life of an orphaned dependent.

She answered the phone, her tone flat. "Aunt Patty, what is it?"

"Iris, darling!" Patty's voice oozed with a sickeningly sweet, fake concern. "I was just thinking about you. Your cousin Anthony isn't happy with his current job. He got into a huge fight with his boss yesterday and quit. The boy just has too much pride, you know? Anyway, I want you to get him a position at the Brock Corporation."

Before Iris could speak, Patty plowed on. "It doesn't have to be a massive role, just a senior manager position will do for now. You and Jayson are getting married next month anyway, you'll be the lady of the house. It's just one word from you to your future husband..."

Patty's shrill, demanding voice was cut off by Iris's cold, unwavering tone.

"I broke up with Jayson. We are not getting married."

The line went dead silent for a few seconds. Iris could almost hear the gears grinding in Patty's head before her booming voice exploded through the speaker.

"Iris, is the fever frying your brain? What kind of nonsense are you spouting?" Patty shrieked. "Are you just making up lies because you don't want to help your own family? After everything we've done for you?"

Iris's grip on the phone tightened, her knuckles turning white. "No. Jayson and I are truly over. I sent the message last night."

"I can't help you with Anthony's job. Goodbye."

Ignoring Patty's furious screaming and demands for an explanation, Iris hung up the phone and blocked the number.

She hailed a cab and returned to the empty, echoing penthouse on the Upper East Side. Everywhere she looked, the space suffocated her. The expensive modern art, the cold marble countertops, the massive leather sofas-none of it belonged to her.

This was Jayson's property. She couldn't stand to be here for another second. Every breath she took felt like inhaling shards of glass.

Iris pulled her two suitcases from the closet and began to pack. Her movements were decisive and mechanical.

She didn't have much. Two suitcases easily held her entire life-her clothes, her design sketches, a few books, and her laptop. She left behind all the expensive jewelry, the designer bags Jayson had bought her out of guilt, and the keys to the car he had given her for her birthday.

When she had started college, she had moved out of her uncle's house into the dorms, and later rented her own small, cozy apartment. She had been independent.

But when Jayson returned from the UK, he had bought this massive penthouse and demanded she move in, claiming he wanted to take care of her. She had given up her lease, thinking it was the start of their forever. Now, she realized it was just a gilded cage.
