Chapter 3

At the time she moved into the penthouse, Iris had been completely unaware of Fawn's existence. She had thought they were moving in together as a natural prelude to their marriage, a way to build a life together before the wedding.

But upon moving in, Jayson had insisted on sleeping in separate rooms. He claimed he wanted to wait until they were officially married before touching her, stating he wanted their wedding night to be perfectly traditional and sacred.

Back then, Iris had been deeply moved by his supposed purity and his deep respect for her. She had thought she was the luckiest woman in the world to have a man who valued her so highly. It was only much later, through whispered gossip and accidental discoveries, that she realized he already had someone else.

He refused to touch Iris because he was saving himself for Fawn. He felt that being intimate with Iris would be a betrayal to the woman he truly loved. The realization had been a slow, agonizing poison that had eaten away at her self-esteem for years.

...

Now that she had finally decided to leave, Iris wasn't going to look back.

She finished packing her two bags, cleaned her bathroom spotlessly, and left absolutely no trace of herself behind. She wanted it to look as though she had never existed in this space.

She hauled her luggage down to the lobby, hailed a cab, and directed the driver to The Peninsula. She planned to stay in a hotel for a few days until she could find a new apartment to rent. She needed a neutral space to decompress.

She had barely checked into her suite, the bellhop just closing the door behind him, when her phone rang. It was her best friend, Devon Fleming.

"Iris! Finally! I've been trying to reach you all morning," Devon's voice was a whirlwind of energy. "How did the dress fitting go the other day? Did you pick the Chantilly lace one?"

Before Iris could answer, Devon continued, "If you didn't find anything you liked at Vera Wang, I can recommend another place. My friend just opened a high-end studio in SoHo and hired a designer who used to do haute couture in Milan. We can go look tomorrow..."

Devon rambled on enthusiastically before realizing Iris hadn't said a single word.

"Iris? Are you there? What's wrong? Did Jayson piss you off again? Did he show up late?"

Iris took a deep breath, looking out the floor-to-ceiling windows at the sprawling green expanse of Central Park. "Jayson and I broke up. There's not going to be a wedding, so I don't need a dress."

Devon paused for a few seconds, the silence heavy. "The wedding is in less than a month. The invitations are already out. The venue is booked. You're joking, right?"

"I'm not joking," Iris said, her tone flat and devoid of emotion.

Devon groaned loudly. "Let me guess. That manipulative bitch Fawn Mcdonald pulled another stunt, didn't she? Did she fake a panic attack again?"

"It doesn't really have much to do with her this time. I'm just... tired, Devon. I'm so tired."

"It's all that bastard Jayson's fault! You have every right to throw a tantrum. But this time, do not back down. Ignore his calls. Make him come crawling to you on his knees to apologize!"

Iris let out a sudden, self-deprecating laugh that sounded more like a sob.

She had sent the breakup text late that night and immediately blocked his number. It had been over a day, and Jayson hadn't made a single attempt to reach her through any other means. No emails, no showing up at the hospital, no calls to her friends.

She had thrown the word "breakup" around before, usually when the pain of his neglect became too much to bear. But no matter how much she cried or screamed, Jayson always used the silent treatment. He would simply ignore her existence until she calmed down.

Because he knew that after a few days of agonizing silence, Iris would always be the one to break. She would always go running back to him, apologizing for being unreasonable.

She had lost her parents at eight, tumbling from a pampered princess to an unwanted burden in her aunt's house. It was Jayson who had healed her childhood trauma, promising to always protect her. For years, she had felt she couldn't survive without him. He was her oxygen.

Everyone in their social circle knew she was madly in love with Jayson. They whispered that she couldn't live without him, that she would accept any crumb of affection he threw her way.

So even when he stopped loving her, even when Fawn intentionally provoked her by wearing Jayson's shirts or posting photos from his apartment, Iris swallowed the pain.

No one believed she would actually leave him. Even Devon, her fiercely loyal best friend, thought she was just throwing a fit to get his attention.

Iris finally understood that her utter lack of dignity in front of Jayson was entirely her own doing. She had taught him how to treat her.

"Devon, I'm serious this time. I'm done being a fool. It's over."

There was a long silence on the other end, followed by a sudden, booming laugh that startled Iris.

"You better mean it!" Devon shouted, her voice echoing with pure joy.

"Thank God you finally woke up! You're the most gorgeous woman in New York. You have talent, you have brains! Why hang yourself on a dead tree like Jayson Brock?"

"I always held back from cursing him out to spare your feelings, because I knew you loved him, but I am so glad you're done! Next time I see him, I'm going to rip him a new one! I'm going to ruin his life!"

After her laughing fit, Devon sensed the lingering sadness in Iris's voice. It wasn't easy to erase sixteen years of history.

She quickly softened her tone. "He's just a man, Iris. He's not worth your tears. Are you at the apartment? Pack a bag, I'm coming over to get you."

"I'm not at the penthouse," Iris said, unzipping her suitcase to take out her toiletries. "That place belongs to Jayson. I don't want to be there. I moved out. I'm at The Peninsula."

Hearing that Iris had actually packed up and moved out proved to Devon that this was real. She was thrilled beyond words.

"Why didn't you tell me something this huge? You packed everything yourself?"

"Don't stay in a hotel. Come live with me! My new townhouse in the West Village is fully renovated, the guest room is perfect. You can just move right in."

Though Devon was her closest friend, Iris hated imposing on people. She needed to stand on her own two feet.

"I took a few days off work. I'm going to look for an apartment to rent. I need my own space."

"Alright," Devon conceded, knowing Iris's independent streak. But she wasn't about to let Iris wallow in a hotel room. "But you are not staying in tonight."
