The Incompetent Husband's Hidden Empire
Chapter 4
Ethan stared at the black business card in his hand.
Graham Sterling.
Chairman, NovaRise Technologies.
Even after reading the name several times, he couldn’t make sense of it.
NovaRise was Vanessa’s company.
Why would its chairman come looking for him?
As if reading his thoughts, Graham smiled.
“I know what you’re wondering, Mr. Ashford.”
Ethan looked up.
“You’ve already taken my shares,” he said. “I don’t own NovaRise anymore. If you’re here because of the share transfer, you’ve come too late.”
Graham’s smile deepened.
“I’m not here because of NovaRise.”
“I’m here because of Obsidian Capital Holdings.”
Ethan frowned.
“The bankrupt company?”
Several executives behind Graham exchanged strange looks before lowering their heads.
One of them almost laughed.
Bankrupt?
That was the first time anyone had described Obsidian that way.
Graham remained calm.
“May I ask who told you Obsidian was bankrupt?”
“My wife.”
“Vanessa Laurent.”
Graham let out a soft chuckle.
“So that’s what she believes.”
Ethan’s brows knitted together.
“Isn’t it true?”
Graham didn’t answer immediately.
Instead, he looked toward the operating room where Ethan’s mother had just been taken.
“I’m glad you made it in time.”
“Family always comes first.”
“When your mother’s surgery is over, I’ll take you somewhere.”
“Where?” Ethan curiously asked.
“To the place that has been waiting for its true owner.”
Ethan looked puzzled.
“My true owner?”
Graham nodded.
“The executives of Obsidian Capital Holdings have been waiting a long time to meet the man who now owns one hundred percent of the company.”
Ethan gave a bitter laugh.
“They’re waiting for me to take over a mountain of debt?”
Again, the executives exchanged amused glances.
This time, Graham couldn’t help smiling.
“Mr. Ashford…”
“I think you’re about to discover that appearances can be very misleading.”
Ethan frowned, unable to hide the confusion in his eyes. “Appearances can be misleading?”
His gaze remained fixed on Graham.
“If Obsidian isn’t drowning in debt, why would Vanessa hand it over so easily?” he asked. “She fought me over twenty million dollars’ worth of NovaRise shares. There’s no way she’d willingly give away something valuable.”
A knowing smile tugged at the corners of Graham’s lips.
“Sometimes,” he said calmly, “the smartest people make the biggest mistakes.”
Ethan stared at him, still unconvinced.
“I don’t understand.”
Graham folded his hands in front of him, his expression growing more serious.
“Then let me ask you something, Mr. Ashford.”
“When Ms. Laurent asked you to sign the transfer agreement, did she ever show you Obsidian’s financial reports?”
Ethan shook his head without hesitation.
“No.”
“She simply told me the company had been operating at a loss for years.” His voice turned bitter. “She said it was nothing more than a financial burden—an empty shell no one wanted.”
“And you believed her?” Graham asked quietly.
Ethan lowered his eyes.
“She was my wife.”
A self-mocking smile crossed his face.
“I never imagined she would deceive me like that.”
For a brief moment, sympathy flickered across Graham’s face.
“Trust is a beautiful thing,” he said. “But in the business world, trust is often the easiest weapon to exploit.”
The words struck Ethan like a hammer.
Images from the past flashed through his mind.
Selling the only house his late father had left him.
Borrowing money from friends and relatives…
Watching his mother sell every piece of jewelry she owned…
All so Vanessa could build NovaRise Technologies.
He had believed every sacrifice would be worth it.
Instead, she had taken everything from him.
His shares.
His dignity.
Even the money that could have saved his mother’s life.
Ethan slowly tightened his grip on the black business card.
“If Obsidian isn’t worthless.” he asked, lifting his head again, “then what exactly is it?”
Graham smiled but didn’t answer.
Instead, he nodded toward one of the executives standing behind him.
The man immediately stepped forward carrying a sleek black briefcase.
He carefully placed it on a nearby table and unlocked it.
Inside were several thick folders embossed with the silver Obsidian crest.
Ethan instinctively reached for one.
Before his fingers could touch the file, Graham gently placed a hand over it.
“Not here.”
Ethan looked up in surprise.
“Why?”
“Because everything inside these files is confidential.”
Graham’s tone remained calm, yet there was unmistakable authority in his voice.
“If these documents became public.”
He paused deliberately.
“The entire business community would be thrown into chaos.”
Ethan searched Graham’s face, trying to determine whether he was exaggerating.
But none of the executives smiled.
Each of them stood silently with solemn expressions, as though Graham had merely stated a fact.
Just then,
The operating room doors slid open.
Ethan’s heart lurched.
He rushed toward the surgeon before the man had even removed his mask.
“Doctor!” he called anxiously. “How’s my mother?”
The surgeon removed his gloves and offered a reassuring smile.
“The surgery was successful.”
“The operation went exactly as planned.”
“Mrs. Ashford is out of danger.”
Ethan closed his eyes.
A breath he hadn’t realized he’d been holding escaped his lips.
The unbearable weight crushing his chest finally eased.
“Thank you.” he murmured, his voice trembling.
“Thank you so much.”
The surgeon gave him a gentle nod before leaving instructions with the nurses.
Graham waited until the doctor had walked away before speaking again.
“Congratulations, Mr. Ashford.”
“Today, you’ve not only saved your mother.”
“You've also stepped into a future you never imagined.”
Ethan looked at him in silence.
His future?
Right now, all he could think about was his mother’s recovery.
Everything else felt unreal.
Seeing his expression, Graham reached into his coat and produced a black envelope.
“This belongs to you.”
Ethan accepted it hesitantly.
Inside was a matte-black titanium card engraved with a silver emblem.
Beneath the emblem were four words:
OWNER — UNLIMITED ACCESS
Ethan’s pupils contracted.
“There must be some mistake.”
“I’ve never even set foot inside Obsidian.”
Graham smiled.
“There is no mistake.”
“The mistake,”
He paused, his eyes narrowing ever so slightly.
“Was believing everything Ms. Laurent told you.”
