The Incompetent Husband's Hidden Empire
Chapter 5
The first rays of morning sunlight filtered through the hospital window, bathing the recovery ward in a warm golden glow.
Ethan sat quietly beside his mother’s bed, exhaustion etched across his face.
The events of the previous day still felt like a dream.
His mother had survived the surgery.
His bank account now held more money than he had ever imagined.
And somehow, he had become the owner of a company everyone claimed was bankrupt.
Eleanor Ashford remained asleep, her breathing steady as the heart monitor beeped softly beside her.
The doctor had assured Ethan that the surgery had been successful. If there were no complications, she would regain consciousness within the next twenty-four hours.
For the first time in months, Ethan allowed himself to smile.
He gently adjusted the blanket covering his mother before standing.
“I’ll be back soon, Mom,” he whispered. “When you wake up everything will be different.”
As he stepped out of the room, his hand instinctively slipped into his pocket.
His fingers brushed against the cool titanium card Graham Sterling had given him.
OWNER — UNLIMITED ACCESS.
Even now, the words felt unbelievable.
Could Vanessa really have been wrong?
Or was someone playing an elaborate joke on him?
The elevator doors slid open.
Ethan walked through the hospital lobby.
Almost instantly, he noticed something was different.
The nurses who had ridiculed him yesterday immediately lowered their heads when they saw him.
None of them dared to meet his eyes.
Nurse Olivia, the woman who had mocked his “photoshopped” bank balance, forced an awkward smile.
“Good morning, Mr. Ashford.”
Ethan simply nodded.
He wasn’t interested in humiliating anyone.
Yesterday had already exhausted him.
Just then, the hospital’s automatic doors opened.
A man dressed in a perfectly tailored black suit strode inside.
He scanned the lobby before walking directly toward Ethan.
Stopping a respectful distance away, he bowed slightly.
“Good morning, Mr. Ashford.”
“My name is Daniel Brooks.”
“I’m Chairman Graham Sterling’s driver.”
“The chairman has asked me to escort you.”
The lobby fell silent.
Nurse Olivia’s eyes widened.
Another nurse nearly dropped the patient files in her hands.
Even the receptionists stared in disbelief.
Daniel stepped aside and gestured toward the entrance.
“The car is waiting.”
Ethan hesitated.
“My mother.”
“The hospital director has personally arranged for the best medical team to care for Mrs. Ashford while you’re away,” Daniel replied politely.
“You have nothing to worry about.”
Almost as if on cue, the hospital director hurried over.
His smile was warm and respectful.
“Mr. Ashford,” he said. “Please rest assured. Mrs. Eleanor
has been transferred to one of our VIP recovery suites at no additional charge.”
“If there’s anything she needs, I’ll oversee it personally.”
Ethan blinked.
“A VIP suite?”
“Yes.”
The director smiled.
“It’s the least we can do.”
Ethan knew exactly why their attitude had changed.
Yesterday, they had seen him as a penniless delivery rider.
Today, they knew he had paid one million dollars without hesitation.
Money truly changed everything.
Without another word, Ethan followed Daniel outside.
The moment he stepped through the hospital doors, he stopped in his tracks.
Waiting at the curb was a gleaming black Rolls-Royce Phantom.
Behind it stood four identical luxury sedans.
Several bodyguards in dark suits stood beside the vehicles.
Seeing Ethan, they bowed in unison.
“Good morning, Mr. Ashford.”
Ethan looked behind him to make sure they weren’t greeting someone else.
Daniel smiled.
“They’re greeting you, sir.”
Still feeling out of place, Ethan climbed into the back seat.
The leather interior was unlike anything he had ever seen.
He had spent years delivering food on an old motorcycle.
Now he was riding in a vehicle worth more than every house on his childhood street combined.
As the convoy pulled away from the hospital, Ethan gazed silently out the window.
The city rushed past.
Forty minutes later, the cars slowed.
Daniel smiled through the rearview mirror.
“We’ve arrived.”
Ethan looked up.
His breath caught.
Towering above him was a magnificent skyscraper of black glass and polished steel.
Its peak disappeared into the clouds.
Across the front of the building, enormous silver letters reflected the morning sun.
OBSIDIAN CAPITAL HOLDINGS.
Ethan’s lips parted.
“This.”
“This is Obsidian?”
He had imagined a crumbling office building.
A company drowning in debt.
Not one of the most prestigious corporate headquarters in the country.
Daniel opened the car door.
“It certainly is, Mr. Ashford.”
Before Ethan could step out, the massive glass doors of the building swung open.
Rows of executives emerged in perfectly tailored suits.
Behind them, hundreds of employees filled the grand entrance plaza.
The moment Ethan placed one foot on the pavement.
Every single person bowed.
Their voices echoed through the square.
“Welcome home, Mr. Ashford!”
Ethan froze.
His heart pounded against his ribs.
He instinctively took half a step backward.
“I think you’ve mistaken me for someone else.”
The crowd remained bowed.
Then Graham Sterling walked down the marble staircase with a faint smile on his face.
He stopped before Ethan and extended a hand.
“No one is mistaken.”
“We’ve simply been waiting.”
He looked Ethan directly in the eyes.
“For the rightful owner of Obsidian Capital Holdings to finally come home.”
Ethan could only stare at him in stunned silence.
The “worthless company” Vanessa had eagerly thrown away.
It was beginning to look nothing like the company she had described.
