Chapter 2

Debora pushed the heavy, wheeled trash bin along the obscenely clean streets of the Upper East Side. The neighborhood looked almost the same as it had three years ago, but somehow, it felt unfamiliar.

The coffee shop on the corner used to be a small deli where she grabbed breakfast before work. Now it was a trendy vegan café charging twelve dollars for a latte.

The air smelled of expensive perfume and freshly ground coffee.

Even more ironic was the fact that the law firm where she'd started her career was just a few blocks away.

She pulled on her thick work gloves, hauled a leaking bag of restaurant garbage from a back alley, and tossed it into the compactor truck. The sour stench of rotting food washed over her. She didn't flinch.

Brakes tore through the morning calm. A cherry-red Ferrari had stopped beside her.

The window slid down. A face she vaguely recognized—handsome, arrogant, familiar in the worst way. Chase Spencer. A trust-fund kid who ran in her ex-fiancé Brandon's circle.

He slid his designer sunglasses down his nose, his eyes doing a slow, insulting crawl over her orange uniform. A smirk played on his lips.

"Well, well. If it isn't the famous Debora Finley." His voice was low, but loud enough for the well-dressed pedestrians to hear.

Debora ignored him, turning to grab another bin. She knew what people like him wanted: a reaction. A show.

"Hey, don't walk away," Chase said, getting out of the car and leaning against it. "I heard you got out. How come you didn't call any of your old friends? Oh, right. I forgot. You're 'serving the people' now."

Laughter erupted from his friends still in the car. A girl in the passenger seat raised her phone, clearly filming.

Debora stopped, her back rigid. She turned and looked at him, her eyes cold. "Chase, move. You're blocking my work."

"Work?" He laughed, louder this time. "Collecting trash is your new career? From the DA's office to a garbage truck. That's quite a fall. How does it feel?"

A few passersby had stopped, watching the spectacle with detached amusement. The humiliation felt like a thousand tiny needles pricking her skin.

She took a deep breath, pushing down the rage. She maneuvered the bin around the front of his precious car and kept walking.

Her silence seemed to infuriate him. He got back in the car, revved the engine with a deafening roar, and cut her off again.

"Did I say you could leave?" Chase's face was dark now. "You're a murderer. What right do you have to act so high and mighty in front of me?"

The word "murderer" was a physical blow, knocking the air from her lungs. The color drained from her face.

Her hands clenched into fists, nails digging into her palms. "I didn't kill anyone," she said, each word a piece of chipped stone.

"Ha! Tell that to the judge," he sneered. "Be smart. Apologize for ignoring me, and I'll let you go."

Debora looked at his face, twisted with a sense of superiority, and felt a wave of nausea. Apologizing would only feed his ego.

With a sudden movement, she shoved the heavy trash bin forward. It stopped just inches from the Ferrari's front bumper, a clear act of defiance.

"You're asking for it!" Chase roared, starting to get out of the car.

Just then, her foreman, a middle-aged man named Mike, came running over. "What's going on? What's the problem here?"

Seeing the Ferrari and Chase, Mike's demeanor instantly changed. He plastered on a fawning smile. "Mr. Spencer, I'm so sorry, so sorry. She's new. She doesn't know the rules."

As he apologized, he shot Debora a venomous glare, silently ordering her to do the same.

Chase glanced at the growing crowd. He seemed to decide against a public brawl. He let out a cold snort, pointing a finger at Debora. "You're lucky today. Don't let me see you again."

He sped off, the Ferrari's engine a final, parting insult.

Mike rounded on Debora. "Do you want to get fired? Do you know who that is? Get back to work, now!"

Debora said nothing. She silently took her bin and moved to the next block. The burn of unshed tears was hot behind her eyes, but she refused to let them fall.

When her shift finally ended, dusk was settling over the city. She dragged her exhausted body toward the subway, taking a shortcut through a quiet, narrow alley.

Suddenly, a pair of blinding headlights flared to life behind her. A black SUV blocked the alley's entrance.

Chase Spencer stepped out, a malicious grin on his face. He walked toward her, flanked by two large men who looked like bodyguards.

"I told you," he said, his voice echoing off the brick walls. "Don't let me see you again."

The other end of the alley was a dead end.
