Chapter 3

Debora's back hit the cold, damp brick of the dead end. She was trapped.

She kept her eyes locked on Chase Spencer as he advanced, her mind racing, searching for any possible escape.

"Thinking of running?" Chase sneered, enjoying her predicament. "No one's here to save you this time. I'm going to teach you what happens when you disrespect me."

His two bodyguards moved to either side, cutting off any slim chance of retreat.

Debora's hand slid discreetly into her pocket, her fingers closing around the cool, metallic shape of the utility knife she carried for protection. Three years in prison had taught her one thing: never, ever depend on anyone else to save you.

Just as she was about to make her move, a low, gravelly voice cut through the tense silence from the deeper shadows of the alley.

"Get lost."

It was a single command, spoken without volume but carrying an absolute, non-negotiable weight.

Chase and his men froze, turning toward the sound. Debora's head snapped in the same direction, startled.

A figure emerged from behind a stack of overflowing trash cans. He was tall, but his clothes were ragged and torn. His hair was a tangled mess, and his face was smudged with grime. He looked like one of the city's countless homeless.

After a moment of stunned silence, Chase burst out laughing. "A bum wants to play hero? Are you dreaming?"

The homeless man didn't speak. His eyes, incredibly dark and deep-set in the gloom, settled on Chase. It wasn't a look of anger or fear. It was the look of a predator watching inanimate prey.

A knot of anxiety tightened in Debora's chest. She didn't want an innocent person getting hurt for her sake. "Go," she whispered urgently to the man. "This has nothing to do with you."

His gaze flickered to her for a barest second, but he ignored her words, taking a deliberate step forward.

"Looks like you need a lesson," Chase said, nodding to one of his bodyguards. "Take care of him."

The bodyguard grinned, cracking his knuckles as he lumbered toward the stranger. He was easily fifty pounds heavier.

The bodyguard's fist flew toward the man's face. And then the man moved. It was too fast, a blur of motion. Debora heard a sharp, sickening crack of bone and a choked-off scream.

The massive bodyguard was on his knees, his arm twisted behind his back at an impossible angle.

The second bodyguard, shocked, pulled a folding knife and lunged.

The man sidestepped the blade, his elbow striking the man's jaw with lightning speed. A dull thud, and the second man crumpled to the ground, unconscious.

It was over in less than five seconds.

The only sound in the alley was Chase Spencer's terrified, ragged breathing.

The stranger walked toward him, step by deliberate step. The aura he projected was no longer that of a derelict. It was a suffocating pressure, primal and lethal.

"You... you stay away from me! Do you know who I am?" Chase stammered, stumbling backward until he hit the side of his SUV.

The stranger's hand shot out and clamped around Chase's throat. With one arm, he lifted the sputtering man off the ground.

Chase's face turned a blotchy purple. He clawed uselessly at the stranger's arm, which was as unmoving as steel.

The stranger's eyes were devoid of any warmth, any mercy. He looked like he was genuinely considering snapping the man's neck.

Seeing this, Debora's heart jolted. She couldn't let someone actually die—not only because of her, but because it would drag her into unnecessary trouble.

She rushed forward and grabbed the stranger's arm. "That's enough! Let him go! You'll kill him!"

The stranger's bicep was a cord of solid muscle under her hand. He went rigid at her touch.

He slowly turned his head, his bottomless gaze landing on her. She met it without flinching, her own eyes pleading with him to stop.

After a long, tense moment, his fingers uncurled.

Chase dropped to the pavement like a sack of garbage, coughing and gagging.

The stranger didn't spare him another glance. He spoke his second word of the night.

"Roll."

Chase scrambled into his SUV, not even bothering with his unconscious men, and tore out of the alley.

Silence returned. Debora looked at the mysterious man, her heart still pounding. "Thank you," she began. "You..."

Before she could finish, the stranger's tall frame swayed. He braced a hand against the wall to steady himself. In the moonlight, his face was unnaturally pale, his lips almost blue.

That's when she saw it. A dark, wet stain spreading across the hem of his tattered shirt.

He'd been cut. He was hurt.
