Chapter 4

He didn’t even flinch.

That was the moment it hit me — crystal clear — I meant nothing. Not anymore.

“For now,” he murmured without meeting my eyes, “stay away from Catrina. Think about what you did.”

I laughed. A bitter, hollow sound that didn’t belong to me.

“Take her to her room,” he ordered the staff. “I don’t want her seen until I say so.”

A bodyguard moved toward me.

“Don’t touch me,” I said, voice low and ice-cold. I pushed myself up and walked away. No one stopped me.

---

Being confined to a penthouse might sound glamorous, but when it’s because your billionaire husband wants you out of view and out of mind, glamour curdles fast. Rumors found their way in anyway — whispers under doors, gossip from careless maids, rumors that clung like mildew.

“Mr. Wynn stayed in Miss Catrina’s suite again last night.”

“She was his first love. Amara married for an embryo, some say because of debt.”

“Her baby died after that transplant… and it still didn’t save Catrina. Now Catrina’s pregnant with the heir. Amara’s days are numbered.”

I heard every line. None of it surprised me. The sting dulled into a cold numbness — the aftermath of a burning: ash and silence.

A maid hurried past my door and then froze. “M-Mrs. Wynn…” she stammered, then fled. As she left I caught the cruel whisper that hit like a blade: “Mr. Wynn said the only Mrs. Wynn from now on is Catrina.”

That night my body betrayed me. Fever, chills; each step felt like walking through tar. Still, I dragged myself down to the in-house clinic, vision blurring.

“Please,” I begged, gripping the wall. “Anything for the fever.”

The family physician wouldn’t look at me. “I’m sorry, Miss Amara. Mr. Wynn has instructed we prioritize Miss Catrina. You’re no longer—” His voice trailed into the sterile air. I laughed then, a cracked, empty sound — some part of me finally giving up pretending.

On the way back, Catrina’s door was ajar. I shouldn’t have peeked. I did.

Inside, Nathan was wrapped around her like she was air. Hands roaming, lips at her throat. “Easy, love,” she cooed. “There’s a billion-dollar baby in there.”

“Our son,” he murmured. “Our legacy.”

They spoke as if the life inside her belonged to them both. I felt bile rise and could not move. Then she said it.

“I wonder if Amara ever made those noises,” Catrina mused, smug. “She seems… so dull.”

“Don’t bring her up,” Nathan groaned, still pressing into her. “She’s cold. Like kissing marble. I only married her because I had to.”

I didn’t notice the tears until they tasted metallic. I bit my lip until it bled; the physical pain was small compensation for the hollow inside.

Back in my suite I collapsed, burning and empty. The next morning I texted my brother.

“I’m coming home.”

His reply came immediately: “Are you serious?! Amara, that’s amazing! Mom and Dad will be thrilled. I’ll book your ticket.” After a beat: “What about Nathan?” I answered: “I’ll divorce him.”

Just then, the door opened. Catrina glided in, silk pajamas clinging to her, one hand cradling her belly like a trophy. “You saw last night, didn’t you?” she purred. “Nathan’s been sleeping in my bed for weeks. This baby? It’s his. His real legacy.”

She stepped closer, proprietorial as always. “About the necklace,” she said, amusement curling her lips. “I smashed it on purpose. Family heirloom? Gone. Just like your baby.”

My stomach flipped. She continued, venom soft as velvet. “And remember when I told Nathan your embryo could save me? He didn’t hesitate. He authorized the surgery himself.”

I gagged on the words as if they were poison. Catrina’s grin widened, cruel.

“Only… I forgot one detail,” she giggled. “It was a lie.”

I stared. “What?”

She shrugged as if it were a petty secret. “I paid the doctor to fake the report. Your embryo was useless to me. I just wanted to see if Nathan would choose me over your child.”

The room tilted. “I wanted to know if he’d pick me.” She laughed like it was a delight. “He did. Without a second thought. He was ready to kill your baby for me.”

My lungs tightened. She stepped in, all false sympathy. “Sorry? Not sorry.” Then she left, closing the door like a judge’s gavel.

I slammed down against it the moment it latched. I wanted to tear her apart, but my body wouldn’t obey. They hadn’t only taken my child. They’d stolen everything I believed in — love, family, trust, motherhood.

In the quiet wreckage, something hardened. No more pleading. No more tears. A vow shaped itself, bright and terrible:

They would pay. Every one of them — Nathan, Catrina, his mother, the crooked doctor, the guards who held me down. I would unravel their dynasty, piece by piece, and make them hurt the way they had made me hurt.

The next time they saw me, it wouldn’t be as a victim. It would be too late. I wasn’t just going to survive. I was going to become a legend soaked in their own blood.
