My Racing Star Chose His Mistress Over Our Baby Chapter 1

The stadium roared like a living thing.

I stood at the edge of the track with a microphone in my hand and a secret under my ribs. Six weeks. No one knew. Not Deacon. Not my father. Just me, and the small warm thought I had been carrying like a candle in my palm.

Tonight I was going to tell him. After the trophy. After the champagne. I had rehearsed the words in the mirror that morning until they came out clean, without the old stutter catching on the vowels. Three years of speech therapy. A hundred cameras. And still, I practiced.

“Autumn, we’re back live in thirty,” my producer said in my earpiece.

I nodded. I touched the inside of my wrist, the way I always did before I spoke on air. A small ritual. A small anchor.

On the giant screen above the grandstand, Deacon’s red car came screaming around the final turn. First place. Of course first place. The crowd stood up as one animal. I lifted my mic and smiled, because that was my job, and because I loved him, and because tonight everything was going to change in the best way.

“And there he is,” I said into the camera. My voice held. “Deacon Mitchell takes the championship—”

The screen cut to the podium.

He climbed up. Helmet off. Hair wet with sweat. He was laughing. Then Aleyna climbed up beside him in her white suit, and she was laughing too, and he turned to her, and—

He kissed her.

Not a peck. Not a teammate’s kiss. He pulled her in by the back of her neck and kissed her the way he used to kiss me in the kitchen when the coffee was burning.

The camera held on them. The stadium screen was four stories tall. Millions were watching.

My hand dropped. The mic drooped to my side. Somewhere far away my producer was saying my name.

“Autumn. Autumn, we’re still live. Autumn.”

I put my other hand flat against my stomach. Just for a second. Just to remember what I was standing here for.

Then I lifted the mic again.

“What a moment,” I heard myself say. My voice came out smooth. Trained. “A championship celebration we won’t soon forget.”

I smiled at the lens. I did not break. Not on camera. Never on camera.

I don’t remember walking off the track. I remember the concrete tunnel under the stadium. The smell of engine oil. My heels clicking too loud.

The VIP lounge was at the end of the corridor. The door was open a few inches. I heard his voice through the gap and my whole body stopped like a car hitting a wall.

“Come on, man,” Deacon was saying. Warm. Loose. That easy voice. “You saw it up there. That’s the real thing. Aleyna—she’s my soulmate. I mean it.”

A lower voice answered. His crew chief. “And Autumn?”

There was a pause. I heard ice move in a glass.

“Autumn’s sweet,” Deacon said. “She’s a good girl. But honestly? Kind of boring. She just doesn’t get me. Never has.”

A laugh. Then footsteps moving deeper into the room.

I put my back against the corridor wall. The concrete was cold through my blazer. I laid my hand over my stomach again. Slowly. Like I was covering the ears of someone very small.

Boring.

I thought of the sketchbooks I had packed away in a box in the closet. The design school I withdrew from. The nights I had sat on my bathroom floor with a speech pathologist’s worksheet, saying the same sentence over and over until the r stopped catching. All of it. For him.

I stood there in the corridor until the voices moved away and the tunnel was empty again. I did not cry. I could not. There was nothing wet in me. There was nothing in me at all.

The clinic was on the other side of the city. I drove myself. I filled out the forms with a steady hand. When they asked if there was someone I wanted to call, I said no.

After, they gave me a juice box and a warm blanket. A nurse with kind eyes told me to sit as long as I needed. I sat. I looked at the ceiling tiles and counted them. Forty‑eight in that row. Thirty‑two in the next.

When I could stand, I walked to my car and I sat behind the wheel and I did not turn the key.

The candle in my palm was out.

I took my phone from my bag. My hand was very steady. I found my father’s name.

He answered on the second ring. “Sweetheart.”

I opened my mouth. For a second the old stammer was back, waiting behind my teeth. I closed my eyes and pushed through it.

“Dad.” My voice was barely there. “I need you to do two things.”

“Anything.”

“Cancel the engagement. Formally. Tonight if you can.”

A long silence. He did not ask why. That was the first mercy. “And the second.”

“Pull every cent out of Mitchell Enterprises. All of it. Do it fast.”

Another silence. Longer. I heard him breathing.

“Autumn.” His voice was low. Careful. “Where are you.”

“I’m okay,” I said. It was the biggest lie I had ever told him. “I’m going away for a while. Milan. There’s a design academy. I want to go back.”

“When.”

“Tonight.”

He did not argue. That was the second mercy. “It’s done,” he said. “All of it. Come home first. Let me see you.”

“I can’t.”

I hung up before my voice could break.

I booked the ticket from the parking lot. One way. Window seat. I did not tell Deacon. I did not tell anyone. I laid my palm on my stomach one last time, and then I started the car.
