Chapter 2

I stepped out of Adrian's arm and walked the length of the carpet myself.

The chandeliers made everyone look expensive and a little cruel. Cameras clicked near the ice sculpture. I did not give them a face worth printing.

Alexander waited by the staircase with a glass of scotch and the look of a man who had already done the math.

I took his arm.

"You are late," I said.

"Am I?"

"Brother," I said, clear enough for the people closest to us. "Try to keep up."

A waiter dropped a tray. The music caught, then failed. The word did the rest.

Charlotte's mouth opened and stayed that way. Vanessa put a hand on a table as if the floor had moved.

"Brother?" Vanessa said. The word cracked. "Olivia, that man is the Lancaster heir."

"I know."

Alexander set the glass down and put his hand on my shoulder where the room could see it.

"My sister," he said. "By blood. Not by the story you sold."

The first whisper was almost kind. Missing daughter. Taken as a child. Twenty years of searches and false leads. I had heard the public version in briefings. Standing in this room, it did not feel like a briefing. It felt like a door opening on a house I had already survived.

My eyes stung. I let them. I did not wipe them. Twenty years of being told I was lucky to have a roof, and the roof had never been mine. The truth did not make the years smaller. It only named the thief.

"Biological," Vanessa said. She clutched the diamonds at her throat. "That is a lie. We took you from an orphanage."

"You took a child you could use," I said. "Do you remember my birthdays?"

She stared.

I did not need her answer. I had the picture already. Charlotte on a chair with too much cake. Me on the kitchen tile with a rag in my hand. Vanessa telling me not to touch the frosting. The smell of sugar and bleach. I was nine. I learned how to want nothing out loud.

"I remember watching Charlotte blow out candles," I said. "I remember being told the leftovers were not for me."

"Keep your voice down," Charlotte hissed. "People are looking."

"Let them."

Vanessa's smile had collapsed. "We clothed you. We fed you."

"You kept me," I said. "That is not the same."

Another flash, uninvited: rain on the back patio. Stone under my knees. Charlotte in the doorway saying my breathing was too loud. Vanessa saying then she should learn to do it quieter. Lightning turned the lawn white. I counted the seconds between the thunder because counting was something I could finish. I stayed out until the storm passed because coming in without permission cost more than the cold.

"Ask her about the jewelry," Charlotte said to the room, bright with panic. "She stole from us. She always did."

"Which piece?" I asked. "The pearls you left in a hotel with your trainer, or the bracelet you sold to cover a debt?"

"Shut up."

"You blamed me for both. Richard locked me in the basement for two days. No water."

A few guests stepped back from Vanessa as if bad luck could transfer.

She came at Alexander then, not at me. Hands up. Voice high.

"Mr. Lancaster, she lies. She has always lied. She pawned my mother's ring. She caused a crash and tried to put it on Charlotte."

Charlotte found tears on cue. She pressed a handkerchief to a dry eye.

"It is true," she said. "I tried to love her. She cut the brake line on my car. She wanted me dead."

Alexander looked at her for a long second. The warmth he had used on me was gone.

Charlotte reached for his sleeve. He caught her wrist and set it aside the way you move a glass that is in the way. She made a small sound and held her hand as if he had broken it.

"I do not need the rest," Alexander said. He stepped in front of me. "She is a Lancaster. She is under my protection. That is the end of the family discussion."

Charlotte's knees went. Vanessa had to hold her up.

I watched the math hit them. The dresses. The trust. The friends who only came when the name still worked. None of it reached as far as the man standing between me and the room.

I should have felt larger. I felt tired. Winning in a room like this still required an audience. I wanted the papers more than I wanted their faces.

"We raised her," Vanessa said. "We gave her a home."

"You gave her a sentence," Alexander said. "I am going to take the house apart."

Adrian came in from the edge of the crowd with his hands in his pockets, as if this were the pleasant part of the evening.

"My fiancée mentioned a trust," he said. "I want written confirmation from the trustees by close of business tomorrow. Principal and interest, Mrs. Bennett. No speeches."

Vanessa looked from Alexander to Adrian and started to cry. I felt nothing useful about it.

I opened my mouth to ask for the documents. I did not get the sentence out.

Shoes hit the foyer marble too fast. A man's voice came with them, already too loud.

"Where is she?"

The guards at the door tried to stop him. He did not let them. A vase went over. Water ran across the floor.

I knew the voice before I saw the suit. I had known it at seventeen. I had known it the night the gate locked. I had spent three years trying not to know it. My stomach dropped anyway. The body is slower than the decision. It still thought his voice meant a door opening.

The doors slammed back.

"I said," Ethan Carter shouted, stepping into the light, "where is Olivia?"
