Chapter 3

Ethan stood in the doorway in a white suit that belonged to a different night.

Seventeen. That was the first time he walked into the kitchen and looked at me as if I were not furniture. Before Charlotte came back from whatever finishing school Vanessa had used to sharpen her. Before I learned that a promise could expire without anyone saying the word.

"Olivia." He saw me and came down the carpet as if the guests were furniture too. "We are engaged. Come home."

I laughed once. It did not sound kind. "Your wife is behind you, Ethan. Did you hit your head?"

"Do not do that. I never ended it. I have been looking for you."

"Looking." I let the word sit. "Do you remember what you told me when I was seventeen?"

"Olivia—"

The memory came clean, which was worse than if it had blurred. A plate on the floor of my room at midnight. Warm cake, the center still soft. Him whispering because Vanessa's door was close. An umbrella in a storm that ruined his shoes. Coffee left on a windowsill while I drew until my hand cramped. He had been good at small kindnesses. He had been worse at the large ones.

I had loved him for the hours no one else offered me. That was the part I could not sand down. It made the rest worse, not better. A person who can see you and still choose the room is not confused. He is finished.

"You brought food when they forgot me," I said. "You walked me home in the rain. You said I was the only person in that house who counted."

"I meant it."

"Then Charlotte arrived." I did not look away from him when I pointed at her. "And the words got cheaper."

"She was in bad shape. She needed help."

"She needed an audience. She knocked on your door at midnight. She fell down the stairs when you were in the hall. You canceled our plans to stand next to her at parties."

"I was being decent."

"Then came the necklace."

He flinched. Good.

I could still feel the emerald under the pillow. Cold stone. Vanessa's voice in the doorway. Richard already decided. I had looked at Ethan first, because that was the habit. He had looked at the floor.

"She put it in my room," I said. "She walked them to it. I asked you to tell them the truth. You told me to apologize."

I had said his name like a rope. He had not taken it. Richard called me a thief and Ethan nodded at the floor, and that nod had lasted longer than the necklace.

"I was trying to keep you in the house."

"You told me to give it back and stop making a scene. Then you watched them put me out."

"I made a mistake."

"You made a choice. You wanted the name and the money. I had neither."

He reached for my arm.

Adrian was there before the contact. He did not raise his voice. He took Ethan's wrist and held it as if it were a document he had already read.

"Touch her," Adrian said, "and I will break your hand."

Ethan pulled. Nothing moved. "Who are you?"

"Adrian Laurent," I said. "My fiancé."

The color left Ethan's face. "That is a lie. You are mine."

"She is not a coat you left somewhere," Alexander said. He came up on Adrian's other side. "You are in my sister's way."

"Sister." Ethan looked at me as if the word might rearrange the last three years. "Olivia. What is he talking about?"

"A test three weeks after you let them throw me out," I said. "I was never a Bennett. The papers caught up. You can stop using the orphan story. It expired."

Charlotte made an ugly sound. "Ethan, stop them."

He looked at her then, really looked, and something in his face finally did the work it should have done years ago. He looked back at the two men beside me.

"We have history. You do not get to erase it." He tore his wrist free and took another step.

"I did not erase it. I left it in the snow."

The last picture was the one I had tried not to keep. The blizzard against the glass. His shape in the window of the front room. Charlotte's hand on his sleeve. The door that did not open. Snow packed into the collar of my coat. I had waited long enough to be sure it would not open. Then I walked until the streetlights ended. By morning I understood the lesson: love that needs an audience will always pick the warmer room.

"I will marry you tomorrow," Ethan said. "We can leave now."

Adrian's arm came around my waist. He did not look away from Ethan.

"She already answered you," Adrian said. "Listen better."

Ethan laughed, short and bitter. "You do not love him. You are doing this to punish me."

"You are not that important."

"I already gave you a chance. Since you didn't appreciate it, go ahead and be with these two nobodies." He pulled himself up and still thought the room was his.

"Charlotte and I are announcing our engagement tonight," he continued. "You can stand here with borrowed names. You are still the girl they put out. You are still nothing."

The guests nearest us stepped back. Not from me. From the stillness that had come over Alexander.

Richard and Vanessa were waving at Ethan from the floor, frantic, useless. He did not see them. He saw only the version of the night he had written on the way over.

Alexander flexed his hand once and let it drop.

"Mr. Carter," he said. His voice was almost polite. "Keep talking."
