Chapter 1

Rain hit the glass of the private jet hard enough to blur New York into streaks.

I had watched storms from this height before. They always looked cleaner from above. On the ground they only made the same streets wet.

"We land in ten minutes," Marcus said from the seat across the aisle. He did not look up from his tablet. "The car is on the tarmac."

"Bentley?"

"Yes. The driver has the route to the Bennett house." He paused. "Are you sure you want to do this tonight? It is their autumn gala. The press will be on the lawn."

"That is why it has to be tonight."

If I walked in on an empty afternoon, they could shut a door and call it private. Tonight the house was full. Tonight they would have to do it in front of people who wrote things down.

"Have you spoken to Alexander?"

"He is already inside. He is bringing the guest I asked for."

Marcus shook his head. "Adrian Laurent. I still do not know what you offered him."

"I did not offer. We traded."

"That sounds expensive."

"Everything about the Bennetts is expensive. I am just finishing the bill."

I stood and walked to the mirror at the back of the cabin. The cream silk sat close at my waist and fell clean at the hip. The earrings were real. The curls on my left shoulder were real. The girl they put out in the snow three years ago was not.

I looked at my own eyes until the fear in them went still. It did not vanish. It just learned to wait behind the rest of me.

Three years was long enough to build a life they could not inventory. It was not long enough to forget the sound of that gate.

"They will not want you there," Marcus said.

"I did not come to be wanted."

The wheels hit the runway. My heels hit wet pavement. The house sat at the end of the drive, all gold windows and open doors, music leaking into the rain.

I climbed the marble steps and stopped on the third one.

Charlotte stood by the entrance with Vanessa's arm hooked through hers. A ring of guests held champagne and practiced smiles. Charlotte saw the dress first. Then she saw my face. The smile she put on was triumph, not surprise.

"Look who came back," she said, loud enough for the nearest tables. "Olivia. Three years on your own and you still dress like you are waiting to be invited in."

"Hello, Charlotte."

Vanessa's gaze ran down the hem as if the silk might stain her. "You have a lot of nerve showing up tonight."

"It is a party."

"You were removed from this family. You do not get to walk back in wearing someone else's money."

A woman near Charlotte laughed behind her glass. "That bag cannot be real. Where would she get it?"

"The earrings are glass," another said. "I have seen the same pair in a shop window."

Charlotte covered her mouth, a pretty little gasp. "Be kind. We all know how she paid for the last three years. Some man with a checkbook and no questions. Did he buy you the costume, Olivia, or did you steal it?"

The laugh that followed was small and mean. My nails cut into my palms. I let them. Heat climbed my throat and I swallowed it. If I answered the insult, I would be standing in their story again. I had not flown across an ocean to debate my shopping.

For a second the steps were not marble. They were the service path behind the kitchen, slick with ice. I had a thin coat and a fever that would not break. The gate had already locked. Charlotte's bedroom light stayed on. Someone inside laughed. I stood in the snow until my hands stopped shaking, then I walked. My shoes filled with water. I did not look back, because looking back was how you asked to be let in.

I came back to the sound of champagne glasses. The rain on my face now was only weather.

"My money is not your business," I said.

"Then why are you here?" Charlotte asked. "To ask for your old room? We turned it into storage."

"I came for what is mine."

Vanessa blocked the next step. "Nothing here is yours. Leave before I have you taken down these stairs."

"I did not come for your name. I came for my mother's trust."

Charlotte laughed. "The trustees released it to me."

"Only if I missed the date in her letter. I did not miss it. Three years is not the deadline. It is the window."

Vanessa's face tightened. "You think you can walk onto my property and threaten me?"

"It is not a threat. The filing went in this morning."

"Security," Vanessa said. "Get her off my lawn."

Two men in black started toward the steps.

My phone buzzed.

Alexander: We are inside.

I put the phone away. "You should call them off."

"Throw her out," Charlotte told the guards.

The head butler came through the doors first. He looked ill. He took the microphone used for arrivals, and the guests nearest the threshold went quiet without knowing why.

"Alexander Lancaster," he said.

The guards stopped.

Vanessa dropped her arms. "The Lancasters are here?"

Alexander stepped onto the portico and fixed a cufflink as if the rain were a minor inconvenience. "Busy night, Mrs. Bennett."

Vanessa found a smile that did not reach her eyes. "We are honored."

"Do not thank me," Alexander said. "I am not the reason you should be nervous."

The butler swallowed. "Adrian Laurent."

The talk died. Even the rain seemed louder.

"Laurent?" Vanessa said. She smoothed her dress with both hands. "Charlotte. Hair."

Charlotte shoved past me. "Move. You are in the way."

I did not move.

Adrian came out of the doorway the way a door comes off a latch: no rush, no extra motion. Black suit. Gray eyes. The crowd opened because crowds always opened for him.

Vanessa went forward with both hands out. "Mr. Laurent, what an unexpected—"

He did not look at her.

His eyes went over the guests, over Charlotte, and stopped on me.

"Olivia," he said.

My name in his mouth still did something unhelpful to my pulse. I had practiced this on the plane: the smile, the stillness, the way I would not reach for him first. I had not practiced the part where the practice failed. For one stupid second I wanted the room to disappear and leave only the fact that he had said my name like it belonged here.

Vanessa turned. "You know him?"

Charlotte's color left her face. "That is not possible."

Adrian walked past Vanessa's hand and stopped on the step below mine. Close enough that I could smell rain on wool.

"You kept me waiting," he said.

"Traffic."

His knuckles touched my jaw, light, public, exact. "Did they give you trouble?"

"Nothing I could not handle."

He looked at Vanessa then. The warmth went out of the air without anyone moving.

"Mrs. Bennett."

"Yes, Mr. Laurent."

"You called my fiancée a kept woman on your front steps."

Charlotte's glass hit the stone and broke.

Adrian's hand settled at my waist. Not a show. A claim. "Say it again. To me."

Vanessa opened her mouth and found nothing in it.

"I thought not," Adrian said. He looked down at me, and the edge in his face eased by a degree. "Shall we go in? You have a claim to finish."

"After you."

We walked through the doors. Charlotte and Vanessa stayed on the wet marble like the night had paused them.

Just inside the ballroom, Adrian bent to my ear. The softness left his voice.

"Smile," he said. "Ethan Carter is on the seating chart. When we are alone, you can tell me why your ex-fiancé has a place at this table."
