Chapter 1

The body in the morgue is wearing my wedding ring, and my husband just signed the paper that says it's me.

He didn't hesitate.

Three days, that's all it took before Margot was sleeping in my bed, my mother's pearls warm against her throat.

I watched from the ravine, mud in my mouth, while two men zipped another woman into a bag that had my name on it.

I built that fund.

Forty million of my father's money, signed over to Damon on a management slip while the ownership stayed locked in my safe under his initials.

He forgot that part.

He forgot I cut open bodies for a living.

So when the police pulled in a forensic specialist to review the unidentified remains, I put on the mask and walked into the back row of my own funeral.

I waited through the eulogy, through his wet, perfect grief, through Margot's hand on his sleeve.

Then I stood up.

I lowered the mask and opened the report and let my voice carry.

Full porcelain crowns, placed three months ago.

I had a root canal a decade back.

This isn't me.

The color left his face in one slow drain, and I smiled, because there was only one way a body that wasn't mine could already be dressed in my clothes the night I died.

He had her ready.

That has a name, Damon.

It's called premeditation, and I'm the only one in this room who knows where the rest of the evidence is buried.

"Zip it up. The reporters are already swarming the perimeter."

The harsh rasp of heavy-duty nylon teeth locking together cut through the freezing rain. I pressed my stomach flat against the bottom of the ravine, burying my face in the wet, rotting grass. Mud jammed deep beneath my fingernails as I dug my hands into the earth to stop them from shaking.

Above me, illuminated by the harsh glare of police floodlights cutting through the fog, two paramedics crouched over a black vinyl body bag.

"Tag says Vivienne Hale," the taller paramedic muttered. He shined his flashlight on the laminated card attached to the zipper. "Wife of the hedge fund guy."

"Tragic," the second paramedic grunted, grabbing the zipper pull. "Look at the burn patterns on the steering column. Fire started fast."

"Yeah, but the impact probably broke her neck first. Didn't suffer. Get the bag sealed."

The metal tab glided up the track, then abruptly stopped.

One second.

Two seconds.

Three seconds.

"Snagged on the fabric," the taller man complained. He yanked the metal tab hard.

Through the gap in the vinyl, the flashlight beam caught a flash of camel-colored wool. My chest seized. It was my Max Mara coat. The exact one I had left draped over the passenger seat of my SUV just hours ago.

I didn't scream. I kept my mouth shut, letting the rain wash over my back.

"Is the husband coming down?" the second paramedic asked, wiping mud from his knee.

"No. Police are taking his statement on the shoulder. He's too shaken up to look at the wreckage."

Shaken up.

My teeth clamped down on my bottom lip. Damon wasn't shaken. Damon was a man who calculated risk for a living.

During our second year of marriage, I transferred my father's forty-million-dollar trust into his investment fund. I signed the management authorization papers on our anniversary. But I never gave him the ownership deeds. Those remained locked in my personal safe at the bank, the heavy brass key engraved with my father's initials, A.H., hidden where Damon would never find it.

Tonight was the night his fund collapsed.

Having a dead body dressed in my clothes ready at the bottom of a ravine on the exact night of a financial ruin didn't happen out of panic. It required meticulous, cold-blooded planning.

"Let's get this up the hill," the taller medic instructed. "Grab the lower handles."

"On three. One, two, three."

They lifted the heavy bag, grunting with effort as they began the steep climb toward the highway.

I dragged my body forward through the sludge, keeping low. I moved parallel to them, using the shadows of the twisted metal wreckage to hide my silhouette. My SUV was completely crushed against an oak tree, the front end scorched black and smelling of burnt rubber.

Up on the asphalt, flashing red and blue lights painted the rain in violent strokes.

Damon stood near the edge of the guardrail. He wore his charcoal Brioni suit, the collar turned up against the wind.

"Mr. Voss," a uniformed officer called out, stepping into the light with a clipboard. "I need you to confirm. The vehicle is registered to Vivienne Hale. Are you certain she was driving alone?"

Damon's voice carried down the slope. Smooth, even, and entirely devoid of a tremor. "Yes. That is my wife."

He didn't hesitate.

A woman stepped out from the shadow of the police cruiser. Margot. My best friend.

She wore a black trench coat, her face pale, playing the part of the grieving confidante. She stopped next to Damon, and her hand slid over his forearm. Her fingers curled into the expensive wool of his sleeve, squeezing tight. A subtle, intimate anchor.

Damon leaned into her touch.

"Mr. Voss, when did she leave the house?" the officer asked, clicking his pen.

"Around eight," Damon answered. "We had a disagreement over finances. She grabbed her keys and rushed out."

"I tried to stop her," Margot added, her voice trembling perfectly. "She wasn't thinking clearly. She was so angry."

"She left her phone on the kitchen counter," Damon said, staring down into the dark ravine. "That's why we couldn't track her. We tried calling her office, her friends."

"You couldn't have known, sir," the officer replied sympathetically. "The roads are slick. The curve is notoriously dangerous."

"She was driving too fast," Margot sobbed, resting her head against Damon's shoulder. "I just know it."

"We need a formal identification at the morgue tomorrow," the officer told them gently.

"I understand," Damon replied. "Whatever you need."

I pressed my forehead into the freezing mud.

If I was dead, Damon got the assets. He got the sympathy. He got the clean slate.

But who was burning in my place?

Three months ago, I sat in my clinic and placed a custom full ceramic crown on a patient. I am a dentist. I know exactly how fire destroys flesh but leaves enamel and porcelain behind to tell the truth.

Ten years ago, I had a root canal on my lower left molar. It was capped in gold.

Whoever was in that bag didn't have my dental records. Damon was smart, but he didn't know dentistry. A corpse could lie about its clothes, its car, and its purse. It couldn't lie about its teeth.

"Careful, the ground is giving out," the taller medic cursed.

His boot slipped on the slick mud. The body bag jolted, hitting the trunk of a fallen pine tree with a heavy thud.

"Watch the tree!" the second medic yelled, losing his grip on the nylon handle.

The impact forced the zipper down a fraction of an inch.

I froze in the brush, less than two feet away from the medics' boots.

Through the tiny opening at the top of the black vinyl, a single lock of hair slipped out, catching the ambient light from the highway above.

It was ash blonde.

My hair was dark brown.

I crawled forward on my stomach, the freezing rain masking the sound of my movement. I reached out, my mud-caked fingers extending toward that pale, lifeless strand of hair hanging from the zipper.

My fingers stopped half an inch away.
