Chapter 2

My fingers stopped half an inch away.

I yanked my hand back into the freezing mud. The taller medic hoisted the nylon strap over his shoulder. The zipper gaped just enough to let the ash-blonde strands drag against the wet grass as they hauled the bag up the embankment.

Not me.

Damon had found a stand-in. A dead woman with blonde hair, dressed in my coat, burned in my car. I pressed my face back into the rotting leaves, letting the rain wash away the sound of their retreating boots.

Three days after the crash, the smell of stale motor oil in my own garage turned my stomach.

I crouched behind the stack of winter tires in the far corner, the concrete floor biting through the thin fabric of the cheap jeans I’d bought at a gas station. Through the narrow pane of glass in the mudroom door, the kitchen lights blared, illuminating the hallway leading to the master bedroom.

"Put the glasses on the counter, Margot," Damon's voice drifted through the cracked ventilation grate above my head.

"Should I pour the Merlot or the Pinot?" Margot asked. Her tone was light, airy, completely stripped of the sobbing grief she had performed on the highway.

"The Merlot. We have a lot to celebrate."

Footsteps approached the kitchen island. Margot stepped into my line of sight. She wore a silk emerald slip dress—my slip dress—but that wasn't what made my jaw lock.

Around her neck rested a string of pearls.

Fifty-two perfectly round, luminous pearls. My mother’s pearls.

I had counted them a hundred times as a child. I had locked them in the innermost compartment of my personal safe at the bank, right next to the trust fund deeds. Damon didn't have the combination. He didn't have the brass key.

Yet here they were, resting against Margot’s collarbone.

"It looks better on me anyway," Margot murmured, tracing the largest center pearl with her index finger.

"Everything looks better on you," Damon replied. He stepped into the frame, pressing a kiss to her bare shoulder. "You earned them."

"Did I?" She leaned back against his chest. "Playing the grieving best friend for the cops was exhausting. I deserve a bonus."

"You'll get your cut once the trust transfers."

My nails dug into the rubber tread of the tire.

Six months ago, at Damon's firm anniversary gala, Margot had stumbled, splashing a full glass of Cabernet across my white silk gown. I had stood there, dripping in red, while Damon handed her a napkin instead of me.

"Don't make a scene, Vivienne," he had whispered, gripping my elbow tightly. "She's new. She doesn't know any better."

I swallowed the metallic taste of blood from my bitten lip. She hadn't been new. She hadn't been clumsy. That humiliation was just a down payment on this exact moment.

"Are you going to open the safe tomorrow?" Margot asked, turning to face him.

"The lawyers need the death certificate first," Damon said. "Once they process the dental records from the coroner, the trust transfers to me. Then we take everything."

"And the girl in the car?"

"Cremated by Friday. A closed casket funeral."

"You're sure the fire destroyed enough?" Margot pressed, her voice dropping. "If someone looks too closely at her jaw..."

"I handled it," Damon interrupted sharply. "The fire burned at over a thousand degrees. There is nothing left to identify but the metal of the car and the jewelry I planted on her. The coroner will sign the report by noon."

"Good. Because I'm not going back to my cramped apartment. I'm staying here."

"You'll stay wherever I tell you to stay until the money clears," Damon snapped, his tone shifting from lover to dictator. "Don't get sloppy now, Margot."

"I'm not sloppy. I'm wearing her pearls, aren't I? She kept these locked away like a paranoid freak."

A bitter laugh threatened to tear its way out of my throat. I pressed both hands over my mouth, forcing the sound back down.

I didn't lunge for the door handle. I didn't shatter the glass. Raging at them now would only get me killed for real.

I retreated deeper into the shadows, sliding my back down the cold wall until I hit the floor. Reaching into the front pocket of my jacket, my trembling fingers closed around a folded stack of stiff medical paper.

The only thing I had managed to retrieve from my clinic before the police sealed my life away.

I unfolded the documents in the dark. I didn't need light to know what they said. They were the exact copies of my dental molds and the complete radiograph history of my lower left molar. The gold crown. The root canal from ten years ago.

Damon thought a coroner would just glance at a charred jawbone and sign off on a stranger. But I was a dentist. I knew how the system worked. Once I mailed these anonymous records to the medical examiner's office tomorrow morning, the discrepancy would flag the body. The police would realize the corpse in my car wasn't Vivienne Hale.

And Damon’s entire forty-million-dollar inheritance would freeze.

"Did you hear something?" Margot’s voice sharpened, breaking through the hum of the refrigerator.

"It's just the wind," Damon dismissed. "Come to bed."

"No, I swear I heard a scrape from the garage."

"The security system is on. We're fine."

"Check it, Damon. Please. I'm on edge."

"Fine. Wait here."

I held my breath, clutching the medical papers against my chest. Heavy footsteps approached the mudroom door. The brass handle jiggled.

"It's locked from the inside, Margot," Damon called out. "Nobody is in there."

"Okay. Okay, you're right."

The kitchen lights flicked off, plunging the house into darkness.

I counted to sixty. Silence settled over the property.

It was time to leave. I needed to get to the post office before dawn.

I shifted my weight, preparing to crawl toward the side exit, when a heavy mechanical clunk echoed through the tight space.

The deadbolt on the mudroom door snapped back.

I froze.

The heavy fireproof door swung open, hitting the metal storage rack with a sharp clang. The harsh yellow bulb of the mudroom flickered on, casting a long, sharp shadow across the concrete floor.

The light hit my face directly. I flinched, raising a hand to shield my eyes.

"I knew you weren't in that bag."

The voice was a harsh whisper, laced with a tremor that hadn't been there a week ago.

I lowered my hand.

My younger sister, Iris, stood in the doorway. She wore a baggy gray sweatshirt, her eyes red-rimmed and wide as she stared down at me crouching in the dirt.

"Iris," I breathed, pushing myself up slightly. "What are you doing here?"

"Damon called me," she whispered, stepping into the garage and pulling the door shut behind her. "He wanted me to pack up your clothes for charity. He said seeing your things was too painful for him."

"He's lying," I said, my voice hardening. "Iris, you need to leave. If he catches you talking to me—"

"I know he's lying," she cut in, her gaze dropping to my muddy jeans. "I heard them talking in the study yesterday. I heard Margot laughing about your car."

"You need to get out of this house. Right now."

"Not without giving you this."

She didn't scream. She didn't call out for Damon.

Instead, she raised her right hand, opening her clenched fist.

Resting in the center of her palm was the heavy brass key engraved with our father's initials—the exact key to my bank safe, the one I thought had burned in the wreckage of my car.
