Chapter 1

"Ms. Quinn, you need to sit down before you read this."

My assistant, Rachel Doyle, held the manila envelope against her chest like it might bite her. Rachel had worked for me for three years. She'd watched me close a two-hundred-million-dollar deal without blinking. She had never once told me to sit down.

"Just give it to me."

"Clara." She used my first name. That was worse. "It's... bad. Like, the kind of bad that makes you want to shower."

I held out my hand. She surrendered the envelope.

The paper inside was thin, almost weightless. A DNA paternity report. Two names at the top.

Ethan Carver, age five.

Liam Carver.

My ex-husband's name sat there in clean black ink, and beside it, one line.

Probability of Paternity: 0%.

I read it twice. My fingers didn't shake. I'd trained them not to.

"So the boy isn't Liam's," I said. "I figured. Mia was never the faithful type."

"Turn the page."

I flipped it over.

A second report. Same child. A different name in the father column.

Noah Lowell.

Probability of Paternity: 99.98%.

Under that, in smaller type, a note from the lab: Genetic markers indicate a first-degree biological relationship between the alleged father and the child's mother.

I stopped breathing for a second.

"Noah Lowell," I said slowly. "Mia's brother."

"Her younger brother." Rachel's voice went flat. "The gambler. Our investigator found the clinic. Some back-alley place on the east side, no license, paid in cash. Six years ago, Noah sold sperm there. Three hundred bucks a sample. He needed the money for a poker debt."

"And Mia bought it."

"She bought it. Our guy has the clinic's ledger. Her name's in it. She paid extra to pick the donor herself." Rachel swallowed. "She picked her own brother because he looks like Liam. Same height. Same dark hair. Same eyes."

The room went very quiet.

Then I laughed.

It came out of me sharp and sudden, and I couldn't stop it. I pressed the back of my wrist to my mouth and laughed until my eyes stung.

Rachel stared at me like I'd lost my mind.

"Ms. Quinn?"

"Five years," I managed. "Five years he's been raising that boy like a crown prince. Five years he's been telling the world his wife gave him a son."

And five years ago, he'd told me I was worthless because I couldn't.

---

That night, the rain had come down so hard it bounced off the driveway.

I remembered standing on the front steps of the house I'd decorated myself, soaked to the bone, while Liam dragged my suitcase out the door.

"Liam, stop. Please. Let's talk about this."

"Talk?" He hurled the suitcase down the steps. It split open in the mud. My sweaters, my mother's photo frame, my books, all of it sinking into brown water. "Three years, Clara. Three years of doctors and tests, and you still couldn't give me a kid. What's left to talk about?"

"The doctors said it could still happen—"

"The doctors said a lot of things." He wiped rain off his face. "You know what Mia said? Nothing. She just got pregnant."

Behind him, in the warm yellow light of the doorway, stood Mia Lowell. My best friend since college. The girl who'd been my maid of honor.

She had one hand pressed over her round belly. Her eyes were wet and wide.

"Clara, I'm so sorry," she whispered. "I never meant for it to happen. It just... did. Liam and I, we couldn't help it."

"You couldn't help it?" My voice cracked. "You slept in my guest room. You borrowed my clothes. You cried on my shoulder about how lonely you were."

"Don't yell at her." Liam stepped in front of Mia like I was the threat. "She's carrying my son. You want to stress her out? You want her to lose the baby? Is that it? You're jealous because she can do the one thing you never could?"

"Liam." I barely recognized my own voice. "I gave up my scholarship for you. I worked two jobs while you built that company."

"And I'm grateful." He reached into his pocket and tossed a folded paper at my feet. It landed face-up in a puddle. Divorce papers. Already signed. "Prenup says you walk with what you brought in. You brought in nothing. So you leave with nothing."

Mia sniffled behind him. "Liam, maybe she should at least get a cab—"

"She's got legs." He looked down at me, cold as the rain. "A woman who can't have children isn't a wife, Clara. She's just a roommate. Get off my property."

The door slammed.

Through the glass, I watched Mia lean against him. Over his shoulder, just for a second, she looked straight at me.

And she smiled.

---

"Ms. Quinn?" Rachel touched my arm. "You okay?"

I set the report down on my desk.

"Turn on the TV," I said. "Channel Four."

"Why?"

"Because it's Thursday, and every Thursday at three, the Carver family does something charming for the cameras."

Rachel grabbed the remote. The screen flickered to life.

There she was.

Mia sat on a cream-colored sofa in a studio built to look like a living room, pearls at her throat, her blonde hair styled perfectly. A little boy sat on her lap in a tiny navy suit. Ethan. He had dark hair and dark eyes.

Noah's eyes.

"So, Mia," the host gushed, "everyone calls you the perfect society wife. What's your secret?"

Mia laughed softly and kissed the top of her son's head. "Honestly? Loyalty. A woman has to know her worth and give her husband what he truly needs. Liam always wanted a family. I gave him one."

"And Ethan looks just like his daddy!"

"Doesn't he?" Mia beamed. "Liam says every time he looks at Ethan, he sees himself."

Rachel made a choking noise. "Oh my God."

I didn't answer. I watched Mia's manicured hand stroke the boy's hair, gentle and proud, like she'd built him herself out of pure virtue.

"We should leak this," Rachel said. "Today. Send it to every outlet in the country. She'll be finished by dinner."

"No."

"No?"

"If I leak it today, she cries on camera, Liam plays the victim, and the internet forgets in a week." I leaned back in my chair. "I didn't wait five years to give them one bad week."

Rachel lowered the remote. "Then what do you want?"

On the screen, the host turned to the camera. "Mia's husband, Liam Carver, CEO of Carver Logistics, is celebrating ten years in his headquarters at the Halden Tower downtown this month—"

I tapped the desk once.

"Rachel, who owns Halden Tower?"

She blinked. "Some property group. I'd have to check."

"Check. Then call them. Tell them I'm buying."

"The whole building?"

"The whole building." I stood up and picked up the DNA report again. "Every floor. Every elevator. Every lease. Including the one with Liam's name on it."

Rachel stared at me. "Clara, you swore you'd never go back to that city."

"I swore a lot of things in the rain." I slid the report back into its envelope. "Book me a flight. I'm going home."

My phone buzzed on the desk.

Unknown number.

I picked it up. A text, just one line.

I know what you found. If you want to know who else bought from that clinic, meet me. Come alone. — N.
