After My Groom Saved His Mistress, I Left Him Chapter 1

Five years of Alaskan wind taught me how to read silence. The way snow muffles a footstep before it lands. The way a man's shoulders shift a half-inch before he lies.

I should have trusted that lesson sooner.

The morning Remington pinned on his commander's eagles, the base chapel smelled like pine and old paper. I stood in the back row in my dress blues, watching him salute the colonel. His jaw was sharp under the fluorescent light. Five years of waiting, and there it was — the rank that meant we could finally marry. I pressed my fingertips together inside my gloves, the old habit, checking for feeling. My hands had been frostbitten the second winter. They tingled now, dull and constant.

He found me in the corridor afterward. Lifted my chin with one knuckle.

"Alena. We did it."

"You did it," I said.

"No." His mouth almost smiled. "We."

I believed him. That's the part I keep coming back to.

That evening the blizzard drill kicked off at twenty-one hundred. Sirens, snow stinging sideways, boots churning the drifts. I was running comms from the south wall when I saw her — a small figure crumpling into the snow about forty yards out, right in the path Remington's unit would sweep. Her hand fluttered up, then down. A perfect arc.

Winona Diaz. Performing arts unit. New transfer.

Remington reached her in nine seconds. I counted. He scooped her up like she weighed nothing, her dark hair spilling over his arm, her face turned into his throat. She was crying — not loud, just the kind of crying meant to be discovered. From the south wall, through the snow, I could still see her hand close around his collar.

The unease moved through me like a draft under a door. I pushed it shut.

The wedding invitations had already gone out. My gown had been fitted. There were people flying in.

For two weeks I watched and said nothing. Winona surfaced everywhere Remington did — at mess, at the motor pool, outside his office with red-rimmed eyes and a story about an ex who had hurt her. I heard the story twice through other women before I heard it from her, which was its own kind of evidence. Remington started taking his calls in the hallway. Started saying my name like a chore.

One night I asked him, gently, if everything was alright.

"Don't," he said, not looking up from his tablet. "Don't make this into something."

I pressed my fingertips together and let it go. Sixteen days to the wedding. Whatever this was, the wedding would reset it. That's what I told myself. A dancer learns to hold a position through the pain. I held mine.

The disciplinary hearing was on a Thursday.

Winona had falsified her performance credentials — a credentials review had caught the gap. Routine. The panel would issue a censure, maybe a transfer. I sat in the gallery because I was the lead performer of the unit, and protocol required my presence. I wore my insignia. I sat very straight.

The doors opened behind me. Boots on concrete, even and unhurried.

Remington walked the length of the aisle in full dress uniform. He did not look at me. He stopped at the panel's table, lifted his hand to his own collar, and unpinned his commander's eagles. He set them down on the polished wood with a small, deliberate click.

The room stopped breathing.

"If Lieutenant Diaz receives any sanction," he said, "I resign my commission. Effective immediately."

The colonel said his name. Once. Quietly.

Remington didn't turn. "She is the woman I love. I will not stand here while she is punished."

I did not move. I have a dancer's stillness when something inside me is dying — feet planted, spine long, breath suspended at the top of the lung. Around me the regiment shifted in their seats, every head turning to find me in the gallery. I felt their eyes like snow on bare skin.

Winona, in the defendant's chair, lifted her face. Her tears caught the overhead light beautifully.

I did not look at her. I looked at the eagles on the table.

I found him in the corridor afterward. He was alone, pacing, alive with something that wasn't shame.

"Five years," I said.

"Don't start, Alena."

"Five years."

He turned on me, and his face was a stranger's. "You're overreacting. She needed me. She has no one. You of all people should understand sacrifice."

Me of all people.

That phrase took my frostbitten hands. It took the second winter, the third, the New Year I spent alone in a Quonset hut with a foil-wrapped piece of cake. It took every stage I had walked away from. It folded all of it into background noise so he could hear her crying more clearly.

"Alright," I said.

He blinked. He had expected more from me. They always do.

I went back to my quarters. I sat on the edge of the cot and called my father. Dominic answered on the second ring, the way he always does, like he's been waiting by the phone since I was nine.

"Dad."

"Sweetheart."

"I'm coming home."

A pause. No questions. "When?"

"Tomorrow."

In the morning I walked the formal request to void the marriage application across the parade ground myself. The wind was clean. I signed my name without a tremor and handed the papers to the commanding officer. He read them, looked up at me once, and said only, "Understood, Lieutenant."

Then I stood outside in the cold and dialed a number I had not dialed in five years.

Atticus Hawkins picked up on the first ring.

"Alena."

My voice did not shake. "I need to come home."

"I'll send the plane."

The line went quiet between us, and in that quiet I heard the first thaw of something I had buried under five years of snow.
