Chapter 1

I stood before the ornate full-length mirror, a stranger staring back at me. The white gown that had taken weeks to alter hung perfectly on my frame, yet something felt hollow in my reflection. Today was my wedding day—the day I had dreamed about since childhood, though never quite like this.

"Sophia, it's time," my father's voice cracked as he appeared in the doorway, his eyes unable to meet mine fully.

I nodded, smoothing my hands over the delicate lace. "I'm ready, Dad."

But I wasn't ready. Not for marrying Paul Brooks—the man I'd loved from afar since we were teenagers—under these circumstances. Not for becoming his wife knowing he wished it was Jane standing beside him instead.

The walk down the aisle felt endless. Each step brought me closer to Paul, who stood tall and handsome at the altar, his expression unreadable. I searched his face for any sign—a smile, a softening of his eyes—anything to indicate he might eventually learn to accept me. There was nothing but cold formality in his gaze.

When I reached him, his fingers barely brushed mine as he took my hand. The minister began speaking, but the words blurred together as I focused on the subtle stiffness in Paul's shoulders, the careful distance he maintained between us.

"I do," he said when prompted, the words clipped and emotionless.

When my turn came, I whispered, "I do," meaning it with every fiber of my being. If only he knew how much.

"You may kiss the bride," the minister announced.

Paul leaned down, his lips barely grazing mine in what could hardly be called a kiss. It was a performance, nothing more. My heart cracked a little wider.

"Perfect!" called the photographer afterward, positioning us for formal portraits. "Now smile together, please!"

I turned my face toward Paul, summoning every ounce of joy I could pretend to feel. His smile never reached his eyes, which remained distant, looking slightly past me rather than at me. I wondered if the camera could capture the invisible wall between us.

"Perhaps a little closer together?" the photographer suggested.

Paul's arm came around my waist mechanically. I could feel the tension in his touch, as if contact with me was something to be endured rather than desired.

"Beautiful," the photographer lied.

The reception was worse. Paul escorted me to our seats at the head table, pulled out my chair with practiced courtesy, and then effectively abandoned me. I watched as he made his way across the room to where Jane sat with our cousins, his entire demeanor transforming. The stiffness in his shoulders melted away; his smile became genuine, his laugh uninhibited.

I sat alone, picking at the food I couldn't taste, accepting congratulations from guests whose pitying glances told me they saw exactly what was happening.

"The groom seems quite taken with your sister," whispered an elderly aunt, patting my hand with misplaced sympathy. "Men can be so blind sometimes, dear."

I forced a smile. "Paul and Jane have always been good friends."

The lie tasted bitter on my tongue.

Dinner was served, and Paul returned only when social protocol demanded it. As we sat side by side, he turned to address a business associate seated nearby.

"Richard, I'd like you to meet Sophia," Paul said, his tone oddly formal. "She's quite different from what I originally expected in a partner, but life is full of surprises, isn't it?"

The table fell silent. Richard's wife shifted uncomfortably in her seat.

"I'm sure you'll both be very happy," Richard offered weakly.

I gathered my courage and attempted to join the conversation. "Paul mentioned your company is expanding into international markets. That must be exciting."

Paul cut in before Richard could respond. "Sophia, I'm sure you'd be more comfortable discussing something else with Catherine. Business talk can be rather tedious for those unfamiliar with it."

The pitying eyes around the table felt like knives.

Each glance confirmed what I had feared since stepping into this gown: I was a substitute, a consolation, an invisible shadow in the life Paul really wanted to live.

I had married a man who would never be mine.
