Chapter 2

Morning light filtered through the curtains as I rose before dawn, careful not to disturb Paul's sleeping form. Our first week of marriage had settled into a rhythm—one where I orbited around him like a distant moon, never quite reaching his notice.

I padded quietly to the kitchen, measuring coffee grounds with precision. Paul liked his coffee strong but not bitter, with exactly one teaspoon of sugar. These small details had become my obsession—learning the map of his preferences, hoping one might lead to his heart.

The eggs sizzled in the pan as I whisked them to the fluffy consistency he once mentioned liking at a hotel breakfast. I arranged everything on our wedding china—a gift from his mother that felt more like a test than a blessing—and placed a small note beneath his napkin.

*Good morning, husband. I hope your day brings success. I'm grateful to be sharing this life with you. - Sophia*

Simple words that carried the weight of everything I couldn't say aloud. I'd written a different note each morning, each one a tiny bridge I extended across the chasm between us.

I ironed his shirt with meticulous care, smoothing away every wrinkle as if I could somehow smooth the tension between us just as easily. The fabric was still warm when I hung it on the doorknob of our bathroom where he would find it after his shower.

Paul emerged thirty minutes later, his hair damp, cologne creating an invisible barrier around him. He nodded at the breakfast spread without meeting my eyes.

"You're up early again," he observed, his tone neutral.

"I wanted to make sure you had a proper breakfast before your meeting," I replied, trying to keep the desperate hope from my voice.

He ate quickly, eyes fixed on his phone, scrolling through emails. The note remained undiscovered beneath his napkin. When he finished, he stood, gathering his briefcase.

"Don't wait up tonight. Board dinner."

And he was gone, leaving behind the scent of his cologne and my untouched note.

Later that afternoon, I found yesterday's note crumpled in his suit pocket while doing laundry. It joined the others in a small box I kept hidden in my dresser drawer—a collection of unread sentiments that chronicled my one-sided attempts at connection.

---

The days fell into a pattern. I spent hours researching recipes I thought might please him, memorizing his schedule to anticipate his needs before he voiced them. I learned which shirts he preferred for which clients, how he liked his ties knotted, which cufflinks signaled important meetings.

On Wednesday, I prepared his favorite meal—or what I'd gathered was his favorite from conversations overheard between him and Jane. Beef Wellington, asparagus with hollandaise, and chocolate soufflé for dessert. I set the table with candles, put on the dress I'd worn the night he'd proposed to Jane before our arrangement changed everything.

Seven o'clock came and went. Then eight. At nine, my phone chimed with a text:

*Working late. Don't hold dinner.*

I blew out the candles, their smoke curling upward like my evaporating hopes. The soufflé had already collapsed, a fitting metaphor for the evening. I wrapped his portion and placed it in the refrigerator with a small note on proper reheating instructions. Then I sat alone at our dining table, forcing myself to eat food that tasted like nothing while staring at his empty chair.

From the window, I watched other homes on our street—lights glowing warmly, shadows of couples moving together in synchrony. I pressed my palm against the cool glass, wondering if I would ever stop feeling like an observer in my own marriage.

---

"Sophia, dear, is that what you've chosen to wear?" Margaret Brooks' voice cut through the chatter of the family dinner at the Brooks estate.

I glanced down at my navy dress—conservative, elegant, purchased specifically for family functions.

"I thought it was appropriate for a family dinner," I replied softly.

Margaret's lips thinned. "It's just that in this family, we tend to make a bit more effort for Sunday gatherings. Jane always understood that, didn't you, Jane?"

Across the table, Jane looked uncomfortable, her eyes darting between Margaret and me. "The dress is lovely, Sophia," she offered weakly.

Paul, seated beside his father at the head of the table, remained silent, his eyes fixed on his plate.

"The roast is excellent," I said, attempting to change the subject. "Is it a family recipe?"

"Indeed," Margaret replied. "It's been passed down through the Brooks family for generations. Speaking of family traditions, Paul, have you told Sophia about the expansion plans for the eastern branch? The board meeting went well, I assume?"

I brightened, seeing an opportunity to connect. "Yes, Paul mentioned there were discussions about new markets in Asia. I read an interesting article about emerging economies there that might—"

"Perhaps," Margaret interrupted, her smile not reaching her eyes, "you should focus on learning to run a household properly first, dear. Business discussions can be so complex, and you've barely settled into your role as Paul's wife."

The table fell silent. Paul nodded slightly, a gesture of agreement that pierced me more deeply than any verbal rebuke could have.

In that moment, as I felt myself shrinking under their collective gaze, I wondered if I would ever be anything more than an inadequate replacement—the wrong sister in a dress that was never quite right, saying words that would never be heard.
