The Deaf Heiress's Sweetest Revenge Novel Cover

The Deaf Heiress's Sweetest Revenge

For a decade, silence was my only companion, a quiet cage carved by the accident that took my parents and my hearing. Then a fever burned through me, and sound came crashing back. My first thought was Courtland, my fiancé—until I heard his voice through the study door, cool and businesslike, explaining that our marriage was a contract hinging on "the deaf girl." He would divorce me in a year. He called me a beautiful, empty doll. The signed "I love yous" and patient smiles were all a mask. Numb, I returned to our bedroom, his kiss still echoing in my newly opened ears, and pressed record. The timer started: 00:01. A countdown to the end of my old life—or the start of a new one.

Chapter 2

Florence POV

I lay perfectly still.

I listened to Courtland move around the room. The rustle of his shirt. The jingle of his keys. The soft, decisive click of the front door closing.

He was gone. With Ivory.

I waited, counting the seconds in my head. Then I opened my eyes.

The silence he left behind was different. It wasn't empty. It was filled with the hum of the building, the faint wail of a distant siren. The city was alive. For the first time in a decade, I could hear it.

I pushed back the covers. The movement was silent, practiced. I crossed to the windows, my reflection a pale shape against the glittering grid of Manhattan. A thousand lights in a thousand windows.

A beautiful cage.

My eyes fell on a silver-framed photograph on the console table. Me and Courtland at the Met Gala. His arm possessive around my waist. His perfect, lying face.

I picked up the frame. My fingers traced the cold glass.

I brought it close. For the first time since I was sixteen, I spoke. My voice was a dry, unused rasp.

"Liar."

The sound of it startled me.

With a small, deliberate movement, I placed the photograph face down. A tiny rebellion. A tremor of strength.

I pulled the phone from my robe. I stopped the recording. An hour and twelve minutes. I saved the file. Evidence_01. I encrypted it and uploaded it to a secure cloud server.

Then, I opened my contacts. My thumb scrolled past caterers, florists, acquaintances. It landed on a name I hadn't called in years.

Richard Harrison, Geneva. My uncle.

Courtland had encouraged me to distance myself from the Harrisons. To protect me from their pity, he'd said. I had been too broken to argue. But Richard had never stopped trying. A birthday card, every year.

My thumb hovered over the call button. This was admitting failure. Asking for help.

What choice did I have?

I glanced at the clock. Early morning in Geneva. Perfect. I took a deep, shuddering breath.

I pressed call.

The electronic tone was strange in my ears. It rang four times. Five. I was about to hang up.

A man's voice, thick with sleep, answered.

"Florence?"

My name. Spoken by someone who knew me. It broke something inside. A decade of grief rushed up, choking me. I pressed my fist to my mouth, silent tears streaming down my face.

A pause. Then Richard's voice sharpened. "Florence, what's wrong? Are you okay? Did that Wagner bastard do something to you?"

His immediate distrust of Courtland was a balm. I fought for control, forcing air into my lungs.

"Uncle Richard," I whispered, my voice cracking. "I… I can hear."

Absolute silence on the line.

Then, his voice, strained. "What did you just say?"

Quickly, clinically, I told him everything. The fever. The sound. The voices from the study.

Richard's shock morphed into a cold fury. "That son of a bitch. I'm booking a flight now. I'll be in New York by tonight."

"No," I said, my own voice surprising me with its firmness. "If you come, he'll know. I need to leave, but my way. Cleanly." I was thinking clearly for the first time in a lifetime. "I need your help. I want to come to Geneva."

Another pause. When he spoke again, the sleepy uncle was gone. In his place was the shrewd businessman who ran Harrison Global's European branch.

"Good girl. You have your mother's strength. Tell me what you need."

We spoke for nearly an hour, forming a blueprint. I would play the part. Gather evidence. He would engage his lawyers. Arrange my escape.

When I hung up, a profound calm had settled over me. I was no longer a victim. I was a player.

I was sitting on the edge of the bed when the front door opened again around three in the morning. Courtland stumbled in, reeking of whiskey and Ivory. He stopped when he saw me awake.

Why are you awake? he signed, his movements sloppy.

Bad dream, I signed back, my face a mask of innocence.

He came toward me, arms open. The smell of him, of his betrayal, made my stomach clench. His hands landed on my shoulders. A visceral revulsion shot through me.

I flinched.

A small, almost imperceptible tightening of my muscles.

Courtland paused, a flicker of confusion in his drunken eyes. He dismissed it. Blamed it on the fever. He patted my shoulder and went to the bathroom.

I lay back down, my body rigid. For the first time in ten years, I closed my eyes in the presence of the man I was supposed to marry and felt not love, but the cold, thrilling promise of war.
