The Deaf Heiress's Sweetest Revenge Novel Cover

The Deaf Heiress's Sweetest Revenge

For a decade, silence was my only companion, a quiet cage carved by the accident that took my parents and my hearing. Then a fever burned through me, and sound came crashing back. My first thought was Courtland, my fiancé—until I heard his voice through the study door, cool and businesslike, explaining that our marriage was a contract hinging on "the deaf girl." He would divorce me in a year. He called me a beautiful, empty doll. The signed "I love yous" and patient smiles were all a mask. Numb, I returned to our bedroom, his kiss still echoing in my newly opened ears, and pressed record. The timer started: 00:01. A countdown to the end of my old life—or the start of a new one.

Chapter 3

Florence POV

The next morning, I woke with a sharp, cold purpose. I walked into my enormous closet, the soft click of the door latch sounding like a gunshot.

Today was the charity polo match in the Hamptons. Another performance.

I slid open a drawer lined with silk. My hand froze. Tucked in the back corner, a splash of black against the pale creams, was a piece that was not mine.

An Agent Provocateur bra. Aggressively strappy. Unapologetically sexual.

Ivory had posted a picture of herself wearing the matching set on her private Instagram two weeks ago. It must have been left behind—deliberately or carelessly—after one of their encounters here, in this apartment. In my home.

A territorial marking. A deliberate invasion. Or a careless mistake. It didn't matter which. It was evidence.

Bile burned the back of my throat. I swallowed it down. Hard. No tears. No screaming. Just a cold, quiet hum beneath my skin. A resource. A weapon.

I pulled on a pair of thin silk gloves. With two fingers, I pinched the garment as if it were contaminated. I placed it in a Ziploc bag, pressed the air out, and sealed it. I wrote on a small label in neat, block letters: Evidence_02.

I locked it in the safe hidden behind a panel in the wall.

"Morning, beautiful." Courtland's voice. He wrapped his arms around my waist, pulling my back against his chest. "Ready for the polo match?" He signed the words against my back, a practiced, hollow gesture.

The revulsion hit me like a wave. Every nerve screamed. I forced a slow breath, commanding my muscles to unclench. I relaxed into his hold, transforming the flinch into a soft, yielding lean.

I turned, a serene smile fixed on my face. A porcelain mask.

Almost ready.

His phone vibrated against my back. A text. I could hear the distracted, insincere tone in his voice that I had been deaf to for so long.

On the helicopter, the roar of the rotors a deafening wall of sound, Courtland was glued to his phone. Smiling that soft, intimate smile I used to think was mine. I discreetly opened a network analysis app.

A simple scan confirmed it. COURTLAND's iPhone was in a constant, rapid data exchange with a device named IVORY's iPhone.

I took a screenshot. Evidence_03.

The polo club was a sea of pastel linen. As soon as we arrived, we were the center of attention. The handsome heir and his beautiful, tragic fiancée. Courtland played his part, his hand on the small of my back, his eyes scanning the crowd.

He didn't have to search long. Ivory made her entrance in a fire-engine red dress. Impossible to miss.

Courtland's focus snapped to her. "I need to go say hello to Bob van der Woodsen," he murmured into my ear. "Banking business. Be right back."

He squeezed my shoulder and was gone, weaving through the crowd not towards the elderly banker, but directly towards the flash of red.

I sat in the VIP tent, a glass of untouched champagne in my hand. I watched them meet behind a towering pyramid of champagne flutes. He brushed a stray hair from her face. She laughed and placed her hand on his chest.

Less than fifty feet away.

The whispers started. Sharp, specific. For the first time, I heard every word.

"Look at her, the poor deaf thing. She has no idea."

"He's not even trying to hide it anymore. It's humiliating."

I ignored them. I raised my phone, pretending to take a picture of the field. I adjusted the zoom, centering the frame on them. The lens was excellent. It captured his hand on her waist, the triumphant smirk on Ivory's face.

Click.

I saved the photo. Evidence_04. I sent it to my uncle.

A moment later, my phone buzzed. A calendar reminder.

*Final Wedding Gown Fitting - Vera Wang, 10:00 AM tomorrow.*

I stared at the words. A slow, cold smile touched my lips.

I opened the calendar app. I navigated to the appointment.

I tapped "Delete Event."

A box popped up. Are you sure?

I tapped "Delete Event" again. It vanished.

Then, with the sounds of the chukker bell and polite applause washing over me, I opened a new browser tab. I logged into the encrypted portal for a Swiss legal firm. I pulled up the residency visa application and attached the final documents from Richard.

Surrounded by people who pitied me, mocked me, and thought me oblivious, I calmly pressed "Submit."

In the same breath, my phone screen lit up.

A message from Courtland.

Tomorrow afternoon. Vera Wang. I'll come with you for the fitting. Don't be late.

I stared at the words.

He had never—not once—offered to accompany me to a wedding fitting. Never.

I lowered the phone slowly, my fingertips cold. My heart slammed against my ribs, one heavy beat after another.

Does he know?
