Chapter 2

Colin's hand hovered near my shoulder, suddenly rigid.

He snatched the emergency placement packet off the counter and shoved it back toward Rosa. “Keep your old divorce fight out of a child-placement hearing.”

He did not ask what Northgate Women's Clinic was.

That bothered me more than Daniel's accusation.

“Colin?” I said.

“We are not doing this here.” He straightened his cuffs. “Sadie needs to get home.”

Daniel ignored him. He reached into his canvas jacket and set a daily pill organizer and a neon-green retainer case on top of the paperwork.

“Allergy tablet at eight,” he told me. “Reading club is Wednesday. Dr. Evans has been trying to reschedule her orthodontist appointment. Lena missed the last five.”

I picked up the cases. Daniel knew details I had never bothered to ask whether he knew.

“Memorizing a calendar doesn't erase nine years,” I said.

“I'm trying to keep her teeth straight, Molly. Take the pills.”

Rosa returned with Sadie's overnight bag and reviewed the placement rules with both of us. Daniel's apartment still needed a home visit, so Sadie would sleep at mine. Daniel was allowed to stay through the evening routine, but the written plan did not require him to remain overnight.

An hour later, my apartment felt too small for four adults' histories and one frightened child.

Sadie sat on the living-room rug and lined up six crayons.

“This one is Mom,” she said, pointing to a broken red stick. “Aunt Molly. Dad. Colin. School. And Bad Days.”

She rolled the beige crayon—the one she had assigned to Colin—away from the others.

“Mom says he bosses too much.”

Colin looked down at his phone as if he had not heard her.

I sat beside Sadie and asked what she wanted for dinner. She chose buttered noodles, then changed her mind twice because Lena always ordered for her on “bad days.” That phrase lodged under my ribs. Eight years old, and she already had a private vocabulary for her mother's relapses.

Daniel did.

“Did Lena ask you for money this week?” he asked me.

“That is none of your business.”

“If she's buying pills with it, it is.”

“I paid her electric bill directly.”

Daniel's eyes narrowed. “She hasn't had an electric account in her name since April. Her sublet includes utilities.”

Heat climbed my face. Last Tuesday I had sent three hundred dollars to an account number Lena texted me and never checked the name attached to it.

I went to the kitchen for Sadie's cup before Daniel could read the answer on my face.

In the upper cabinet, my knuckles hit a rusted blue cookie tin. Inside were two faded ticket stubs from Brookfall Community Theater.

Opening night. Seats B7 and B8.

For a second I was twenty-four again, standing in our old kitchen while Lena shoved a pink envelope against my chest. The ultrasound image inside had no patient name on the border. A pharmacy receipt had been tucked behind it. I had never questioned either detail.

The cabinet door slammed shut.

Colin stood inches behind me.

“Don't let Daniel turn a seven-week almost-romance from nine years ago into an excuse for what is happening now,” he said quietly.

I turned. “How do you know it lasted seven weeks?”

His face did not change, but one thumb rubbed the edge of his cufflink.

“I know what you've told me.”

“I never told you seven weeks.”

“We have a wedding photographer call at nine tomorrow,” he said, stepping away. “Can we focus on our actual future?”

The answer landed like a locked door.

Daniel came out of the guest room. “Window locks work. Smoke detector is live.” He wrote his number on a sticky note and pressed it to the refrigerator. “I'll be out front at seven to take Sadie to school unless the written plan changes.”

“You checked the room,” I said. “You can go.”

Sadie shot to her feet.

“No!”

She threw herself against the doorframe, both hands gripping the wood.

“Dad, don't leave again!”

Tears ran down her face so fast she could barely breathe between words. “Mom said you always leave when things get bad. She said if I make trouble, you'll go away.”

Daniel stopped before touching her. “Sadie, look at me.”

She shook her head.

He lowered himself to the floor several feet away. “I am going home because the court said tonight is Aunt Molly's house. I am coming back at seven. Those are two different things.”

“Promise?”

His mouth tightened. “I can promise what I control. I will be outside at seven unless a judge or caseworker changes the plan. If that happens, I will tell you myself.”

Sadie's grip loosened a little.

Colin checked his watch. “This is exactly why boundaries matter. She cannot start depending on a man who—”

“Stop.”

The word came out of me before I could soften it.

Colin looked at me.

“Not in front of her.” I pointed toward the kitchen. “And not tonight.”

His jaw tightened. “Molly, I came here to help.”

“Then help by lowering the temperature.”

Sadie appeared at the hallway entrance with her toothbrush in one hand. “Are you mad because Dad knows my medicine?”

“No,” I said immediately. “None of this is because of you.”

Daniel nodded once. “Adults are sorting out old information. Your job is teeth, pajamas, and school.”

She studied all three of us, clearly unconvinced, then retreated toward the bathroom. Her silence was worse than a tantrum. It told me she had learned to monitor adult moods before deciding whether a room was safe.

For the first time since we got engaged, he looked at me as if I had failed a test I did not know I was taking.

He picked up his coat.

“Call me when you're ready to talk about the wedding instead of him.”

The front door shut behind him.

Sadie flinched at the click.

Daniel stayed on the floor, exactly where he was, hands resting on his knees.

I looked at my niece, then at the man I had spent nine years calling unreliable.

“Tell me what she meant,” I said. “Why does Sadie think she's going to lose you again?”
