Chapter 3

Ten minutes after Colin left, Sadie curled into the far corner of my sofa, arms locked around her knees. Daniel knelt on the rug beside her. His hand hovered over the fleece blanket but stopped before touching her.

“Explain it,” I said. “Why does she think she's going to lose you again?”

Daniel kept his eyes on his daughter. “Because Lena has been telling her I leave when things get hard.”

“Mom says you throw people away,” Sadie whispered.

“You gave Lena that story when you walked away from us,” I snapped.

Daniel stood. “I did not walk away. Lena put my name on the hospital security list after Sadie was born. You helped enforce it because she told you I was upsetting her.”

“I was keeping the peace.”

“You were protecting your sister.” His voice stayed controlled. “There is a difference.”

I wanted to argue, but Sadie's face stopped me. Dark circles sat beneath her eyes. She looked exhausted enough to disappear into the cushions.

“Go brush your teeth, bug,” I told her. “You can sleep in my room tonight.”

She hurried down the hall.

Daniel lowered his voice. “The school needs both adults named in the temporary order for the pickup update. I'll meet you there at eight.”

“I can handle school paperwork.”

“I know. But this order has both our names on it.”

He left without waiting for another fight.

The next morning, Sadie's homeroom teacher, Harper Blake, was waiting at the elementary-school front office with a clipboard and a folder thick enough to make my stomach sink.

A red line crossed out Lena's old pickup permission. A yellow sticker beside my name read COURT ORDER.

Two mothers entered behind us and slowed when they saw the paperwork.

“The Whitaker family again,” one whispered. “That poor kid.”

My face burned.

I grabbed the chained pen and moved it toward Daniel's name. “I need him removed from unscheduled pickup. He does not live at my address.”

Harper covered the form with her hand. “The temporary order lists both of you. I cannot remove a court-approved caregiver based on one guardian's request.”

“I am the emergency placement.”

“And Mr. Reeves is already a verified parent in our records.” Harper opened the folder. “He attended nine parent-teacher conferences in the last two school years. Lena missed six.”

I stared at the attendance log.

Nine signatures. Nine dates.

One entry included a note from last spring: Father supplied replacement inhaler and attended reading conference. Another documented him waiting forty minutes after Lena failed to arrive for pickup. Those were not grand gestures. They were ordinary, boring pieces of parenting—the exact kind of evidence I had spent years insisting did not exist.

Lena had told me the school refused to meet with Daniel unless she approved it.

A crayon drawing stuck out from the folder. Across the top Sadie had written MY FAMILY. Daniel stood inside a square house. I was outside beside a brown door. Lena was a tangled purple shape in the corner.

“Why have I never seen these records?” I asked.

Harper hesitated. “I assumed the parents shared them with you. You were listed as the emergency contact, not a legal guardian.”

My phone rang.

The rehab center.

“Lena?”

“Put Sadie on.” Her voice sounded scraped raw. “I need my baby.”

“She is in class. You need to work through your treatment team.”

“Did you let that man into your house?” Lena demanded. “After everything he did to me?”

I hit speaker before I could talk myself out of it. “You were arrested with pills in the car. Stop making this about Daniel.”

“He made me beg like trash when we were married!” Lena cried through the tiny speaker. “And now you're helping him. You always wanted what was mine.”

Daniel's jaw tightened, but he did not answer her.

Through the office window, Sadie's class passed on the way to the library. She saw us gathered around the phone and went pale.

I ended the call immediately.

Harper closed the file. “Please do not take treatment calls in a place where Sadie can overhear them. She's already carrying more adult information than she should.”

She slid over a second page for media and release permissions. “Until the placement review is complete, I also need one written rule about who may receive information from the school. No relatives, attorneys, or family friends get schedules from us without your joint authorization.”

Daniel signed first. He checked the box marked NO THIRD-PARTY DISCLOSURE and passed me the pen.

I signed beneath him. It was the first decision we had made together without arguing. The fact unsettled me almost as much as the paperwork.

The correction stung because Harper was right.

By three that afternoon, Colin had sent eleven messages.

Do not talk to Daniel alone about nine years ago.

Do not give the rehab call log to Audrey.

Protect our future.

The last line appeared three different times.

He never asked whether Sadie made it through class.

I sat at the kitchen island with the school file open in front of me. Daniel came in from pickup carrying Sadie's lunchbox.

“Reading log is in the front pocket,” he said. He rinsed the juice container and set it on the drying rack as if he had done it a hundred times.

“I signed it in the car.” I pushed my phone toward him. “Look at this.”

He read Colin's messages without comment.

“He is trying to protect me,” I said, though the defense sounded weak.

“He is trying to control what evidence gets discussed.” Daniel handed the phone back. “Is he always this worried about one clinic name?”

A new message appeared before I could answer.

Colin: I can explain the Northgate thing, but don't ask about it in front of Daniel.

Daniel read the line over my hand.

He did not smile. He did not say I told you so.

He only looked at me and asked, “How much of your past does your fiancé know that you never told him?”

For the first time, I had no answer ready.
