Chapter 1

"I want an annulment."

To escape my five-year hell of a marriage to Alpha Kaden, I agreed to the "Claw's Penalty"—thirty lashes.

That was preferable to watching my husband coddle his mistress, Brittaney, while I slowly died of neglect.

But Kaden wouldn't let me leave with dignity.

When Brittaney's gene-mod hound bit me, Kaden used his Alpha Command to force me into the gravel to apologize to the dog.

When Brittaney poisoned herself with wolfsbane to frame me, Kaden pistol-whipped me and let a torturer jam silver needles under my fingernails.

He called me a "guilt-trip" left by his father, a slave with a title.

The final straw came when Brittaney faked a fall from a horse.

Kaden didn't ask questions. He kicked in my ribs and ordered "The Quartering"—execution by silver chains.

As my joints popped and the silver burned my skin, he roared, "I protect this family!"

He didn't know I was the family's only hope.

His mother intervened just in time, cutting me down and handing me the signed annulment papers.

I left that night, and the mate bond didn't just break; it vanished into silence.

Kaden thought he had broken a weak Omega.

He didn't realize that by shattering the bond, he had unlocked my true form.

Six months later, I returned not as his wife, but as the legendary White Wolf.

And Kaden was waiting in a cage to beg for a forgiveness I no longer possessed.

Chapter 1

POV: Harlow Love

The marble floor of the Council Hall wasn't just cold; it was predatory, sucking the heat straight through the denim of my jeans.

"I want an annulment," I whispered.

The silence was heavy, like a guillotine waiting to drop.

"Speak up," the voice of Mrs. Barnes, the Queen Mother, cut through the air. She sat on the high seat, her face a mask of rigid tradition. She wasn't looking at me with hatred, but with the weary annoyance of a bureaucrat dealing with a filing error. "And look at me."

I forced my chin up. "I want out, Luna Mother," I said, my voice trembling but audible. "I can't play Kaden's wife anymore. The contract is suffocating me."

Mrs. Barnes smoothed her silk skirt. "It's been five years, Harlow. Your father died for my son. We gave you a home. We gave you a title. To break a blood-debt contract is no small thing."

"Ungrateful?" A bitter laugh bubbled in my throat. I pulled my collar down, exposing my unmarked neck. "Look. Five years, and I'm still blank. Every full moon, my blood boils, my heat hits, and he's... elsewhere. My wolf is starving to death. This isn't a marriage; it's a slow execution."

Mrs. Barnes's gaze flickered to my neck, then away. A shadow of discomfort passed over her face, quickly replaced by steel.

"The law is the law, child," she said, her voice devoid of warmth but lacking her usual bite. "If you leave without the Alpha's rejection, you commit treason against the pack structure. The penalty for unilateral exit is fixed."

"The Claw's Penalty," I breathed.

"Thirty lashes," she confirmed, gripping the armrest of her chair. "It is the price of breaking a blood oath. Survive it, and the debt is paid. You may leave."

Thirty lashes. For a shiftless Omega, it was a gamble with death.

But then I thought of Kaden. I thought of his cold blue eyes looking through me. I thought of the floor of the master bedroom.

"I accept," I whispered.

Mrs. Barnes nodded slowly, looking almost relieved that I hadn't begged. "Sunset. The enforcers will be ready. Go prepare yourself."

I walked out on shaking legs. I needed air. I headed for the garden, passing under the Alpha's study.

"She's just a placeholder, Brittaney. You know that."

I froze. The voice was gravel and smoke. Kaden.

"But she has your name!" Brittaney Cortez whined. The scent of synthetic vanilla and desperation drifted down. "Mrs. Barnes. It makes me sick."

"It's ink on paper," Kaden scoffed. "I never marked her. My wolf is dormant around her. She's a dud. A guilt-trip my father left me."

My chest constricted. The bond didn't snap loudly. It just quietly suffocated.

"Promise me you'll kick her out," Brittaney cooed.

"I promise. She's nothing. Just a slave with a title."

I turned to run, blinded by tears.

Grrr.

Brittaney's pet-a gene-mod hound, all muscle and malice-blocked my path.

"Nice dog," I whispered, backing away.

The beast lunged. Its jaws clamped onto my calf.

"Get off!" I screamed, kicking at its snout. Pain seared up my leg, hot and wet.

"Buster! Heel!"

Kaden vaulted from the balcony, landing heavily. He kicked the hound in the ribs. The dog yelped and scrambled back.

I clutched my leg, blood pooling in the white gravel. "Kaden..."

He didn't look at me. He looked past me. "Brittaney!"

Brittaney ran out, fake tears already flowing. "Oh god, Kaden! She kicked Buster! She provoked him!"

"He... he bit me..." I gasped, black spots dancing in my vision.

Kaden looked down. His nostrils flared at the scent of my blood, but he suppressed the instinct. His face hardened. "You smell like fear, Harlow. You upset Brittaney."

"Look at my leg!"

"You probably teased him," Brittaney sniffled.

"Kneel."

The Alpha Command hit me like a physical slap. My bones locked. I collapsed onto the gravel, the sharp stones digging into my fresh wound.
