Chapter 5

"Tiffany, you still trust him, don’t you?"

Lucas's voice hit me like a stone in the silence of the dimly lit café. His words weren’t a question—they were an accusation wrapped in disbelief. I gripped my cup tighter, the ceramic painfully cool against my palm.

"Lucas," I began cautiously, keeping my tone even, "why would you even say that?"

His sharp green eyes pierced through me like blades. Lucas had always been intense, but this? This was something else—something darker. He leaned forward, his elbows digging into the wooden table.

"Because I know him, Tiff. I know what he’s capable of."

My breath hitched, and I couldn’t stop the wave of unease that crawled up my spine. The Lucas I remembered was warm, charming, always quick to throw a protective arm around me. This version of him felt colder, his words dripping with disdain.

"Nathaniel isn’t who you think he is," Lucas pressed, his voice lowering to an almost conspiratorial whisper.

I raised an eyebrow, trying to hide my mounting frustration. "So what? He’s not perfect? Who is?"

"You’re not listening," he snapped, his fist hitting the table. The loud crack drew a few curious glances from other patrons. Lucas didn’t care. "I’m saying he’s dangerous."

Dangerous. The word hung in the air between us like a bad omen. My mind flashed back to Nathaniel’s cold threats, the way his eyes burned with unspoken secrets.

"And you think you’re the expert on him now?" I shot back, my voice sharper than I intended.

Lucas's jaw clenched, his fingers raking through his dark hair. "Yes, because I’ve seen what he does to people who get in his way. And I won’t stand by while he drags you into whatever twisted game he’s playing."

"What twisted game?" I challenged, leaning forward. "You’re talking in riddles, Lucas. If you’ve got something to say, just say it."

He exhaled heavily, his gaze flicking toward the window as if gauging who might be listening. Then, he pulled out a crumpled envelope from his jacket and slid it across the table.

"This," he said simply.

My hand hovered over it for a second, my pulse quickening. The envelope was thick, its contents lumpy and disorganized. Something about it felt ominous, like Pandora’s box waiting to unleash chaos.

"Go on," Lucas urged. "Open it."

Against my better judgment, I did. Photographs spilled out onto the table—grainy, candid shots of Nathaniel in the kind of places he had no business being. Dark alleys, dingy warehouses, shadowy figures exchanging something in the background.

"What the hell is this?" I breathed, unable to tear my eyes away.

Lucas tapped one of the photos with a calloused finger. "That’s him at a Blackthorn drop. Do you know what that means?"

My blood ran cold. Blackthorn. The name was like poison. Everyone in the city had heard of their underhanded deals and ruthless tactics. If Nathaniel was involved with them, it wasn’t just business—it was something far more sinister.

"No," I whispered, shaking my head. "You’re lying."

"Am I?" Lucas challenged, his voice hard. "Look at them again. Look closely."

My stomach churned as I picked up another photo. This one showed Nathaniel talking to a man whose face was partially obscured by shadows, but the insignia on his jacket was unmistakable—a black thorn encased in a crimson circle.

"I don’t understand," I said, my voice barely above a whisper. "Why would he—"

"Because he’s not who you think he is," Lucas cut in, his tone scathing. "He’s not your savior, Tiffany. He’s the reason your family fell apart."

My head snapped up, his words like a slap across my face. "What are you talking about?"

"Think about it," Lucas said, his eyes boring into mine. "The accident. Your father’s bankruptcy. The scandal. All of it connects back to him."

I felt the air leave my lungs. "That’s not possible," I said weakly. "Nathaniel had nothing to do with any of that."

"You sure about that?" Lucas pushed, his tone unrelenting. He reached into the envelope again and pulled out a final piece—a letter. "Read this."

My fingers trembled as I unfolded the paper. The handwriting was unfamiliar, but the words were unmistakable.

"Payment received. Blackthorn confirms target acquisition. Nathaniel S. has approved final stages—M. L."

The room seemed to tilt on its axis. My vision blurred as the words burned into my mind.

"He used Blackthorn to destroy your family," Lucas said, his voice softer now but no less cutting. "And now you’re letting him into your life like nothing ever happened."

Tears stung my eyes, but I refused to let them fall. "Why are you doing this, Lucas? Why now?"

"Because you deserve the truth," he said simply. "Even if it hurts."

I stared at him, my heart caught between disbelief and rage. Was this true? Could Nathaniel really have orchestrated everything? The man I thought I hated but somehow couldn’t stop trusting?

"You’re lying," I whispered again, but it sounded hollow even to my own ears.

"You know I’m not," Lucas said grimly.

I shoved the photos and letter back into the envelope, my hands shaking uncontrollably.

"I need time," I said, standing abruptly. "I need to think."

"Tiffany," Lucas called after me, but I didn’t turn around.

The cold night air slapped my face as I stepped outside. My thoughts raced, tangled in a web of fear and uncertainty. If what Lucas said was true, then Nathaniel wasn’t just my enemy—he was my family’s destroyer.

And I had no idea what to do next.
