After My Boyfriend Dumped Me in the Hospital for a Heiress Chapter 1

Dillon called at 11:47 PM.

I know the exact time because I was still at my worktable, needle in hand, the studio lamp throwing a tight circle of light over the embroidery piece I'd been fighting with for three days. My phone buzzed against the wood and his name lit up the screen and I felt that familiar pull—the one I'd trained myself to answer without thinking.

"Hey." His voice was low, a little rough. "I didn't wake you?"

"No. Still working." I set the needle down. "How are you feeling?"

"Honestly? Pretty rough." A pause. A soft exhale. "The surgery went fine, they said. But it's just—being here alone is harder than I thought. I could really use you, Hayley."

That was all it took.

I told myself this is what love looks like. Seven years. You show up.

I packed a bag in ten minutes. Thermos of coffee, phone charger, the overnight things I kept half-ready because I'd made this drive enough times to know the routine. I locked my studio, locked my apartment, and pulled out of Manhattan just after midnight with the city shrinking in my mirrors.

The highway was nearly empty. I drove through the dark with the heat on low and the radio off, running through my mental checklist—the collection deadline, the investor meeting Friday, the three unfinished panels still on my worktable. I'd figure it out. I always figured it out. Dillon needed me, and figuring it out was what I did.

I want to tell you I had a feeling. Some cinematic premonition, a tightness in my chest, a voice that said turn around.

I didn't. I just drove.

I reached his building at 5:40 in the morning. The sky was that particular gray that can't decide if it's night or dawn. I parked in the visitor spot I always used, grabbed my bag, and pushed through the lobby door.

The elevator was occupied. I took the stairs.

On his floor, I almost walked straight past the delivery driver—a young guy in a green vest, scanning a barcode on a pharmacy bag. He was setting it against Dillon's door.

"Hey," I said. "I can take that. I'm—" I almost said his girlfriend. "I'm here to see him."

The driver shrugged and handed it over.

The bag was one of those semi-transparent white pharmacy bags. I wasn't trying to look. But the receipt was right there, visible through the plastic, itemized and clear. A second toothbrush. Prenatal vitamins. And a folded note tucked along the side, handwritten, the single letter A visible above the fold.

I stood in that hallway for a long time.

Long enough for the delivery driver to reach the elevator and the doors to close behind him. Long enough for the fluorescent light above me to flicker once and hold.

Then I set the bag down in front of his door, took out my key, and let myself in.

The apartment was dark and warm and smelled like someone else's perfume. I knew it before I reached the bedroom. I knew it the way you know a thing you've been not-knowing for longer than you want to admit.

I opened the door.

Dillon was sitting up in bed. Awake. Like he'd been expecting me.

Beside him, barely bothering with the sheet, was a woman I recognized from the kind of places I'd attended on Dillon's arm—charity galas, industry dinners. Angelina Fernandez. Pharmaceutical money, third generation. She looked at me with the mild, satisfied expression of someone watching a scene they'd already scripted.

Dillon looked at me and said, "We need to talk."

Not I'm sorry. Not please let me explain. We need to talk, in the tone of a man who had prepared remarks.

He talked. Incompatible futures. Different trajectories. He used the word organic—as in, this happened organically. He said he'd been meaning to have this conversation for a while. He did not say her name. He did not apologize. He spoke for maybe four minutes and in those four minutes he dismantled seven years with the efficiency of someone who had already moved on and was simply completing the paperwork.

I didn't say anything. I'm not sure I could have.

Mrs. Murray arrived thirty minutes later.

That's when I understood. She'd been called before I got there. Maybe before I even left New York.

She took my arm and walked me into the hallway with the gentle, practiced authority of a woman who has managed difficult situations before. She kept her voice low and warm—the same voice that had called me sweetheart for seven years, that had taught me her son's favorite recipes, that I had called Mom in unguarded moments.

"You're a smart girl," she said. She pressed a folded check into my hand. "You know when to step aside gracefully."

I looked at it. I looked at her face.

I set the check on the hallway console table and walked to the elevator.

I made it to my car before I started crying. I sat in the parking lot in the gray Boston morning and I cried until there was nothing left, and then I started the engine.

My phone rang forty minutes outside the city. Not Dillon. Not Mrs. Murray.

A New York hospital number.

My father. Cardiac arrest. Emergency bypass. Come now.

I took the wrong exit. Sat for ten seconds on the shoulder of the highway, hazards blinking, the sun just beginning to crack the horizon behind me.

Then I turned around.

I drove back toward New York with both hands on the wheel and the heat on full and the radio still off, watching the sky go pink in front of me over a life I no longer recognized, thinking: just drive. Just get there. Just keep moving.

One thing at a time.
