Chapter 3

"Do you believe in curses, Tiffany?"

Nathaniel’s voice slithered through the silence, dark and ominous, as we stood in the cavernous hall of his ancestral estate. His question hung in the air, heavy and foreboding.

I forced a laugh, though my pulse betrayed my unease. "Curses? You’re joking, right?"

"Am I?" His storm-gray eyes glinted, the faintest smirk curving his lips. "This house carries secrets you wouldn’t understand."

A chill crept down my spine. The air seemed colder here, as though the walls themselves exhaled whispers of long-buried sins.

"Enough with the theatrics," I snapped, masking my discomfort with irritation. "If you have something to say, just say it."

He took a deliberate step closer, his presence oppressive, magnetic. "Stay out of the west wing," he said softly, his tone laced with warning.

"The west wing? Are you serious?" I scoffed, crossing my arms. "What’s in there? Another one of your childish traps?"

His smirk vanished. For the first time, I saw something unguarded in his expression—something that looked a lot like fear.

"You’re not ready for what’s in there," he murmured.

His words sent a shiver through me, though I refused to let him see it. Instead, I tilted my chin, defiance curling my lips. "Maybe you’re the one who’s not ready for me to find out."

His jaw tightened, and for a fleeting moment, I thought he might actually grab my arm. Instead, he turned sharply and walked away, leaving me alone in the echoing hall.

His footsteps faded, the oppressive silence returned. I stood there, torn between unease and determination. What was Nathaniel hiding?

Dinner that evening was a tense affair. Nathaniel’s icy politeness grated on my nerves, his every glance a reminder of his earlier warning.

"You’ve barely touched your food," he observed, his tone casual but his eyes sharp.

I speared a piece of steak with unnecessary force, meeting his gaze. "I’m not hungry. The atmosphere here is… unappetizing."

A flicker of amusement crossed his face, but he said nothing.

"This war between our families," I began, breaking the silence. "What do you really want out of it, Nathaniel?"

He set down his glass with deliberate slowness, leaning back in his chair. "And what makes you think I’ll give you an honest answer, Tiffany?"

My chest tightened with frustration. Every word with him was a chess move, every look a feint.

"Maybe I’m tired of the games," I said.

His laugh was low and humorless. "Games? This isn’t a game, Tiffany. It’s survival."

His words struck a chord, though I refused to show it.

"Then tell me why you hate my family so much," I demanded, my voice rising.

His eyes darkened, and for a moment, I thought he might answer. But then he shook his head, a bitter smile playing on his lips.

"Some truths are better left buried," he said.

That night, sleep eluded me. The west wing loomed in my mind like a taunt, its secrets daring me to uncover them.

The house was silent as I slipped out of my room, my bare feet padding softly against the cold marble floors. Every creak of the old wood seemed deafening, every shadow a lurking phantom.

The door to the west wing was heavier than I expected. My fingers trembled as I pushed it open, the hinges groaning in protest.

Inside, the air was thicker, as though it hadn’t been disturbed in years. Dust danced in the moonlight streaming through cracked windows.

A large, ornate mirror dominated the far wall, its gilded frame tarnished with age. My reflection stared back at me, pale and wide-eyed.

"You shouldn’t be here."

The voice made me whirl around, my heart leaping to my throat. Nathaniel stood in the doorway, his face a mask of fury and something else—panic.

"What are you hiding, Nathaniel?" I demanded, my voice shaking.

He strode forward, grabbing my arm. His grip was firm but not painful. "This isn’t a game, Tiffany. Get out. Now."

"Not until you tell me the truth!" I shot back.

His eyes burned with a mix of anger and desperation. "If you don’t leave, you’ll regret it."

My breath caught as I noticed a faint glimmer behind the mirror, like a light flickering to life.

"What’s behind there?" I whispered.

Nathaniel’s grip tightened for a moment before he let go, his expression hardening.

"Go back to your room, Tiffany," he said, his voice cold and final.

I hesitated, my instincts screaming at me to defy him. But something in his gaze stopped me.

I turned to leave, I caught his reflection in the mirror. The look in his eyes wasn’t just anger or frustration—it was fear.

My chest tightened as I stepped into the hallway, Nathaniel closing the door behind me with a resolute thud.

Whatever he was hiding in the west wing, it was something he was willing to go to war to protect.

"You’ll regret this, Nathaniel," I muttered under my breath.

But as the silence of the house swallowed me once more, I couldn’t help but wonder if I’d be the one to regret it.

In the shadows, behind the mirror, a faint sound echoed—a soft, mournful whisper.

"Help me..."

I froze in the hallway, the whisper reverberating through my bones.

And I knew—I couldn’t stay away.
