Chapter 1

"Tiffany Aldridge, are you deaf, or just stupid? I don’t have all day!"

His voice was sharp enough to cut glass, and it sliced through the dim light of the restaurant's back office.

Nathaniel Graves loomed over me, his perfectly tailored suit an armor of control. His storm-gray eyes pinned me to the chair like a butterfly on a collector’s board.

My hands trembled as I stared at the paper in front of me—a contract that felt more like a noose.

"I’m not signing this." My voice wavered, but I forced myself to meet his gaze.

"You will." He leaned closer, his breath cold like winter air. "Unless you’re fine watching your family drown in their own mess."

That was the dagger. He knew where to strike. My father’s hospital bills, my mother’s tear-streaked face, my brother’s desperate apologies—they all flashed before me like a silent film I couldn’t pause.

Nathaniel straightened, his shadow stretching across the room.

"I saved your family once," he said, his voice mockingly soft. "And I can destroy them just as easily. You marry me, or they lose everything. Your choice."

Choice. What a cruel joke.

"Why me?" The question spilled out before I could stop it.

"Why not you?" His smirk was lethal. "You’re convenient. Pathetic, but convenient."

Humiliation burned in my chest, but I swallowed it down. I had no room for pride here.

"This isn’t marriage," I said through gritted teeth. "It’s blackmail."

"Call it what you like," he replied, brushing imaginary lint from his sleeve. "Sign it, Tiffany. Or don’t. I’ll still win."

I hated him. Hated the way he made me feel small. But above all, I hated how right he was.

The pen felt heavy in my hand. Each stroke of my name felt like a chain tightening around my neck. Nathaniel watched, a predator waiting for his prey to surrender.

When I finished, he picked up the contract, inspecting it as if I’d hidden some rebellion in the ink. Satisfied, he tucked it into his briefcase with a snap.

"Good girl." His words dripped with condescension.

: "I’m not your pet." My voice cracked, but I wouldn’t let him see my tears.

He ignored me, turning toward the door. But then he paused, his hand resting on the frame.

"This is just the beginning, Tiffany." He glanced over his shoulder, and the malice in his eyes froze me in place. "I’ll make you regret every moment of this marriage. Mark my words."

The door slammed shut, leaving me in a suffocating silence. My heart pounded in my ears, drowning out the faint hum of the restaurant beyond the office walls.

I wanted to scream, to tear that contract to shreds. But instead, I sank into the chair, my head in my hands. My life, my freedom, everything I’d known—it had all just been signed away.

This wasn’t marriage. It was a prison sentence.

"Tiffany?" The hesitant voice of my coworker, Carla, broke through my thoughts.

"What is it?" I snapped, then immediately regretted my tone. She didn’t deserve my anger.

She stepped inside, her wide eyes darting around as if she could feel the tension lingering in the air.

"Are you okay? You’ve been in here a while."

"Fine," I lied, standing quickly. "Just handling...something."

The lie tasted bitter, but what could I say? That I’d just agreed to marry a monster to save my family?

I walked past her, I caught my reflection in the small office mirror. My brown eyes were dull, lifeless. The face staring back wasn’t mine—it belonged to someone trapped, someone defeated.

But defeat wasn’t an option. Not yet.

"Just the beginning," I whispered to myself, echoing his words.

If this was the start, I needed to prepare for the storm that was coming. Because if Nathaniel Graves thought I’d let him destroy me, he was wrong. Dead wrong.
