Chapter 4

"I froze the cloud node," Priya announced, her fingers flying across the tablet screen. "But the remote administrator wiped the primary server. Scenarios one-twenty through one-forty-three only exist on the local mirror now."

"Where is the mirror?" I asked, sliding my legs over the edge of the stiff mattress.

"Your home wall terminal."

Victor stepped directly into my path, blocking the door. "You have fractured ribs, Isa. You are not leaving this room."

A doctor hurried into the space behind him, holding a digital clipboard. "Mr. Reyes requested an extended observation hold. We need to keep you for further neurological assessment."

"Cancel it," I demanded, ignoring the sharp pain shooting up my right side. "Bring me the discharge papers against medical advice."

"I am your medical proxy," Victor stated, his voice flat and authoritative. "I say she stays."

"I revoked that status ten minutes ago," I shot back, grabbing my ruined evening bag with my left hand. "I am a co-owner of that house. I am going to get my files."

I snatched the clipboard from the startled doctor and scribbled my signature across the glass screen. I checked the wall clock. Seventy-one hours and forty-two minutes.

Priya leaned in close, keeping her voice low. "Victor’s legal team filed another extension request two minutes ago."

Eighteen minutes. If I had stayed in this bed for eighteen more minutes, I would have lost my voting shares outright. The observation period was never about my ribs. The hospital stay was a calculated countdown to my incapacitation.

"Call a car, Priya," I ordered.

Thirty minutes later, the front door of our Coral Gables estate clicked shut behind me. I bypassed the living room and went straight for the built-in smart terminal in the hallway. My good hand typed in my administrative override code.

The screen populated with one hundred and forty-three folders. I opened the master spreadsheet.

Row after row quantified my life. The system tracked my health metrics, my client income, the exact value of my mother’s inheritance, and my fifteen percent equity. The column header read: *Divorce Friction Value*.

"You always loved data," Victor said.

I spun around. He stood at the end of the hall, his tie loosened, having followed me from the hospital.

I pointed at the glowing screen. "Simulation one-twenty-seven. 'In event of severe accident, cite cognitive impairment to delay asset division and secure voting rights.' You planned this."

"Every CEO runs risk assessments," Victor replied, stepping closer. "Camila only entered the variables. It is standard corporate governance."

"You calculated my death," I said. The words struck the hardwood and came back at us.

"I protected the shareholders," he corrected, stopping a few feet away.

I tapped the glass monitor. "Simulation one-forty-three. 'Optimal Window: six weeks pre-IPO. Hospitalization over seventy-two hours. Public sympathy controllable.' You ran this exact scenario. You waited for me to cross the seventy-two-hour mark."

Victor shoved his hands into his pockets. He offered no apology.

I opened the attached asset map folder. A high-resolution 3D render of a Brickell penthouse filled the monitor. The title text sat in the top right corner: *V+C Post-Separation Residence*.

"A real estate investment," I quoted his earlier lie.

I zoomed in on the custom breakfast bar I had drafted fourteen months ago. Two ceramic coffee cups sat on the imported marble counter. One bore a gold 'V'. The other, a 'C'.

"We haven’t really started anything," Victor said, his tone shifting to a practiced calm. "The apartment is only a simulation of future possibilities. A stress test for our assets."

"I designed the master closet," I said, staring directly into his eyes. "I measured the exact depth of the velvet-lined drawers for your watch collection. Why does a woman you haven’t started anything with know the exact millimeter width of your Patek Philippe?"

Victor adjusted his cuffs. The mask of the concerned, caring husband finally vanished, replaced by the ruthless founder I had funded eight years ago.

"Three million dollars," Victor offered. "You keep the design studio. We issue a joint statement citing amicable differences."

"And in exchange?" I asked.

"You transfer the fifteen percent voting rights to me tonight," he said. "And you hand over Priya’s tablet with the crash logs."

Before I could answer, the electronic keypad on the front door beeped.

Someone punched in the six-digit code. Our anniversary date.

The oak door swung open. Camila stepped into the foyer. She carried Victor’s dark gray suit on a dry-cleaning hanger. Over her other arm draped a sheer silk nightgown.

She froze when she saw me standing by the wall terminal. She did not look embarrassed. She did not act like she had walked into the wrong house. She assessed me in silence.

Victor did not ask why she had the code to our private residence. He did not ask why she was carrying her sleepwear into my home.

He walked straight toward her, lowering his voice. "Why are you here?"

Camila gripped the suit hanger tighter. "You said she would stay in the hospital for three full days."

I pulled my shattered phone from my pocket. I swiped up to the voice memo app and hit the record button.

"Say that again," I demanded, holding the microphone toward them.

Victor’s eyes snapped to the pulsing red recording icon on my screen.

He lunged across the foyer, his hand shooting toward my phone.
