Chapter 5

Victor’s hand swiped at empty air. I shoved my phone deep into the leather pocket of my cobalt-blue folder, securing the flap over the screen.

"Audio uploaded to the secure server," Priya’s voice echoed from the folder’s speaker, crisp and devoid of panic. "I have the 'three full days' statement logged, Isabella."

Victor froze, his hand hovering over the foyer table. He looked at Camila, then back at me. "Camila misunderstood the neurologist’s recommendation. We were discussing worst-case scenarios."

"You told her I would be locked in a hospital bed for seventy-two hours," I said, my tone dangerously flat. "You gave her the security code to our front door."

Victor stepped forward. "She brought the suit because the PR team scheduled an emergency press conference for tomorrow morning. You are twisting facts to fit a narrative."

"I am reading the facts off a spreadsheet you designed," I replied. I tapped the final command on the wall terminal. The progress bar hit one hundred percent. I pulled the silver flash drive from the port and dropped it into my pocket.

"I am calling the police," Victor warned, pulling his device from his jacket. "You are stealing VelaDrive trade secrets."

"Wrong, Victor," Priya countered through the speaker. "As an injured party in an active collision investigation, Isabella securing local data from a jointly owned residence does not constitute corporate theft. Go ahead. Call them."

Victor lowered his arm. His jaw tightened until the muscle twitched.

I looked at the three-million-dollar settlement paper sitting on the console table. Then I looked at Camila, who still clutched my husband’s suit and her silk nightgown.

I grabbed my left ring finger. The diamond slid over my knuckle with zero resistance. I dropped the ring onto the printed ink of the settlement offer. The metal hit the wood with a sharp clatter.

"From this second forward," I told Victor, "every word you say to me goes on a legal record."

Two hours later, I stood inside the judicial impound garage. The wrecked VelaDrive chassis sat under harsh fluorescent lights, a mangled monument to my marriage.

The right side had caved in. The A-pillar had snapped, folding inward like crushed tin. My side of the car.

A man in a grease-stained jacket knelt by the crushed passenger door. He ran a digital caliper along the sheared metal of the frame.

"You are not the insurance adjuster," I said, stopping a few feet away.

He stood, wiping grease onto a rag. "Noah Bennett. Independent reconstruction expert."

He did not offer a polite greeting. He did not ask about the cast on my arm. He simply pointed at the deep gouges in the doorframe.

"A system failure creates chaos," Noah stated, his tone clinical. "Sensors misfire. Brakes lock unevenly. You spin out. But look at the tire marks on the police report. Look at the steering angle." He tapped the crumpled hood. "This impact angle is surgical. The car aimed you at the concrete."

"The logs claim the collision was unavoidable," I replied, crossing my good arm over my chest.

Noah reached into his jacket and pulled out a faded manila envelope. He held it out. "Sebring test track, three years ago. The predictive braking patch locked my rear wheels early. I hit the wall at one hundred and forty miles an hour."

I studied the envelope. "Victor blamed driver error. He ruined your license."

"He buried the telemetry," Noah corrected. "The software that crashed my car shares the exact same decision core as your Protected Occupant module."

"Why corner me now?" I asked, refusing to take the envelope. "You could have gone to the press."

"The press needs proof. You have founder-level access. I have the crash he wants erased." Noah tossed the envelope onto the hood of the wrecked car. "Together, we can tear his company apart."

His honesty felt like a trap. Another man asking me to trust him to destroy the life I had built.

"Show me," I demanded.

We moved to Noah’s static simulator pod in a cramped back office off the main garage floor. The rig consisted of three screens and a salvaged VelaDrive bucket seat.

"Sit," Noah instructed, working the main console.

I lowered myself into the passenger seat. The leather felt too familiar.

"MacArthur Causeway. Eight forty-seven PM," Noah announced, locking the parameters.

The pod speakers blared. *Unavoidable collision.*

The screens flashed a blinding white. The seat snapped to the left.

My heart hammered against my bruised ribs. Panic hijacked my logic. I threw my left hand out, grabbing the closest anchor point. My fingers clamped around Noah’s wrist as he reached for the keyboard. My nails dug straight into thick, raised scar tissue.

Noah did not pull away. He did not lean in to offer false comfort. He simply reached across his body with his free hand and killed the power switch.

The alarm died. The screens went black.

"No one gets to force you to repeat this trauma for a court case," Noah said, his voice steady.

I released his wrist. Four deep crescent moon indentations marked his scarred skin. I registered the marks, then forced my attention back to the monitor.

"Look at the baseline risk," Noah said, tapping a data table on the center screen. "Without priority protection, injury probability sits at thirty-three percent for all three seats. Equal distribution."

He highlighted a red column at the bottom of the screen.

"With the priority override engaged," Noah continued, "Camila’s severe injury risk drops to eight percent. Yours spikes to seventy-six. The system actively used your side of the car as a crumple zone."

I swallowed hard, the metallic taste of adrenaline flooding my mouth. "Process the flash drive."

Noah connected my silver drive to his rig. He pulled up the home terminal mirror and cross-referenced it with the access card cache Priya had sent over. Lines of code scrolled down the monitor at a dizzying speed.

"It uses a military-grade wrapper," Noah noted, his fingers flying across the keyboard. "Victor was terrified of someone finding this."

"He should be," I said.

Noah stopped the scroll. "I found a renamed encrypted file. Creator initials V.H. Last modified thirty-six hours before your crash."

"Do not open it yet," I ordered. I pulled my secondary phone from my pocket and dialed.

"Why?" Noah asked, his hand hovering over the mouse.

"Victor will attack the chain of custody. I need a witness."

Priya answered on the first ring. Her face appeared on my screen. "I am recording the video feed," she confirmed. "Run it."

I nodded at Noah.

He executed the decryption script. The black interface expanded across the glass monitor, wiping away the scattered code. The title text loaded in stark white letters, filling the center of the screen.

PRIORITY DECISION TREE—PRIMARY: CAMILA TORRES—ADMIN: VICTOR HALE.

"He hardcoded her name into the safety logic," Noah muttered, reading the text.

Below the title sat a single audio file, labeled as a voice-print authorization command.

"Play it," I said.

Noah clicked the icon. The desktop speakers crackled, and Victor’s ragged exhale filled the quiet room.
