Chapter 4

Footsteps cracked under Adrian's shoes as he crossed the shiny floor inside SalesPush HQ, sound bouncing off the high glass panels. Not far now, his gaze cut left and right, thoughts already sorting calendars, agreements, talks ahead. Today was meant to run clean. Twists brought clutter. The kind that never stayed where you put it.

"Mr. Vale?" Her words pulled him back. One foot moved, then the other, like she wasn't sure where to stand. Hesitation clung to her more than usual.

Something in his voice made her pause was hesitant, almost careful. Then: "It's about the letter." A beat passed before she added more.

"There's... a new consultant in the Rivera case," she said carefully. "Eli Navarro. He's here for the afternoon session. He'll be working with you on the strategy review."

Frozen, Adrian stayed still, a blink longer than normal. Chloe saw it. "A consultant?" Not loud, his words carried something tight beneath.

"Yes... but he's highly recommended. Donovan insisted," Chloe added quickly, sensing the tension. "He's efficient, professional. I think he'll meet your standards."

Out came a long breath from Adrian as he pressed fingers to nose. Rules again. It is always rules. A short nod followed. "Alright. Send him here."

A file tucked beneath one arm, Eli Navarro entered the SalesPush meeting space, gaze darting across faces without pause. Polite greetings weren't part of his plan that day. Every second spent idle slipped away for good. The person waiting there remained unknown to him personally, yet familiar by name: Adrian Vale. Fresh on the list of top earners, he runs everything with sharp precision. Quiet moves hide how fiercely he plays. A mind like his makes enemies without saying a word. Still waters here run colder than most expect.

Now he saw the man clearly, near the table, posture rigid, dressed in a crisp suit, radiating quiet command. Their gazes locked, Adrian's look cool, measuring, edged with something close to hunger. A shift ran through Eli, spine aligning without thought. Movement stopped. Breathing slowed. Resistance was not an option.

"Mr. Navarro," Adrian said, his tone clipped. "I assume you've read the files."

"Yes," Eli replied evenly, placing the documents on the table. His hands were steady, controlled. "I've analyzed every clause and cross-referenced the data. If you want, I can give a quick summary before we start discussing strategy."

Adrian's eyes narrowed slightly, leaning back. "Good. I like people who come prepared. But understand this: I don't tolerate mistakes. Not in contracts. Not in execution. Not in strategy."

Got it, Eli replied, a small smile playing on one corner of his mouth. Same here

The silence sat heavy after the last word, edges of tension you could feel. Not every skilled person left this kind of impression Eli did. His certainty didn't shout; it landed clean, exact, like steel meant for one purpose only. A beat too fast, Adrian's heart moved, even if his face stayed still.

Out of the room slipped Chloe, quiet as a shadow. Forward came Adrian, palms down on the wood, fingers wide like starfish. "One part at a time we take it," he said. "Talk straight, Navarro." His voice held an edge, no space for extra words. Time wasted was time lost, that much showed clear

Eli nodded, flipping through the files with deliberate speed. "Understood. Section one: Rivera's market projections show potential for a twenty percent growth increase if we adjust supply chain timelines and optimize distribution. However..." His voice remained calm, controlled, but the 'however' carried weight. "The risk lies in overproduction. We can't leverage growth if demand fluctuates."

Adrian leaned back, tapping his fingers on the table. "Good observation." The brief praise was laced with scrutiny. "But you'll need to present contingency plans. I don't just want problems pointed out, I want solutions. Always solutions."

"Already drafted," Eli replied, sliding a folder toward him. "Three alternatives. Conservative, moderate, aggressive. Each with financial projections, risk analysis, and implementation timelines."

Adrian raised an eyebrow, impressed despite himself. "Efficient. I like that. But I warn you, Navarro, efficiency alone won't earn trust. You'll need adaptability. Judgment. Guts. Can you handle that?"

Eyes locked on him. "I have that covered. What about yourself?"

A crackle ran through their words, thin but bright. Stood still, both of them, though the walls seemed to lean in closer. Not just anger. Not only admiration. A push underneath, unspoken. Whatever it was, Adrian kept it locked behind his teeth.

Time slipped by as they talked tactics. Though Eli spoke carefully, his ideas faced tough questions. When Adrian proposed something new, replies came steady and exact. Back and forth they went, voices tense but respect holding firm. Yet under it all, something stirred unspoken, persistent, impossible to dismiss.

A moment passed when Eli moved toward a folder Adrian had been watching. Their fingers grazed, just barely. The brief contact sent Adrian's heartbeat spiking. He shifted back slightly, pretending the edge of the table forced the move. Eli stayed still, yet saw everything. His eyes held steady, refusing to drop.

"Fast on your feet," Adrian remarked after a pause, like he was feeling his way through. Not quite slow enough. Others could see it as pride instead.

"I call it preparation," Eli replied evenly, but the faint smirk lingered. "You'll find arrogance and preparation are sometimes indistinguishable, until results speak for themselves."

His eyes flickered open, a hint of something close to laughter, risky, almost never seen passing over his face. "We will find out whether what you deliver lines up with how sure you sound, Navarro"

Eli tilted his head slightly. "And if they do, Mr. Vale?"

"You will be allowed," Adrian said, his words quiet but sharp, each one cutting through the air like a blade. For only a little while

When the meeting closed, each man went over the last details. Back came Chloe, watching without sound how tight things felt. Not a word passed between Adrian and Eli while they left. Still, energy hung there like smoke after flame. Without saying it, both sensed this wouldn't be their final round. A spark now lived where none had named one before.

Sound of the city crashed through the streets. Adrian walked toward his vehicle, thoughts stuck on each exchange, each cold look, each quiet grin Eli gave him. It annoyed him to realize, clashing like this sparked something alive inside.

Backward Eli moved, clutching papers, a small grin creeping onto his face. Not just annoying but sharp, Adrian Vale got under his skin. Yet here it was, after ages, something stirring inside him, unplanned. A tug he could not figure out. A challenge he couldn't ignore.
