Chapter 5

Inside, Adrian liked order. Espresso scent curled through the air along with the quiet shine of wooden surfaces. Outside, horns blared, engines growled, people rushed, city noise never stopped. He believed he could shape what happened here. Though truth? Control slipped like sand.

Back in the chair, eyes on the pages from the first talk with Eli Navarro. Competence? Sure, that was counted on. But the cool, tense kind of sureness Eli wore that caught him off guard. Same flavor as his own, yet edged differently, less predictable somehow.

Something tapped against the wood, pulling him out of his thoughts.

"Inside," Adrian said, careful to sound flat.

Inside walked Eli, a folder tucked under his arm, back stiff, face giving nothing away. A moment he stood still, eyes scanning slow, like numbers ticking through data. The air shifted when he took it in, quiet, sharp, each glance deliberate.

"Vale," he said, flat but polite. "I thought we could start reviewing the revised projections for Rivera before the afternoon session. You requested the updated numbers, correct?"

Adrian leaned forward, eyes narrowing slightly. "I did. And I expect accuracy. No oversights. No excuses."

Eli smirked faintly. "No oversights. No excuses. Sounds like your life motto."

A flicker crossed Adrian's mouth, gone before it could settle. What he puts up with might shock you, what slips past doesn't stand a chance

Across the wide mahogany table they sat, documents fanned out like cards. Sharp silence snapped into place the moment their eyes met. Each idea from Eli drew a slow stare, then dissection. When Adrian answered, words landed clean, one after another, without warning.

At one point, Eli leaned forward, pointing to a graph. "If we adjust the inventory schedule by two weeks, the projected revenue increases by twelve percent. But we risk overextending on supply if market demand fluctuates."

Adrian tapped his pen on the table, eyes fixed on Eli. "Good. But I want three contingency plans attached, and I want them by tonight. Can you do that?"

Eli didn't flinch. "Already drafted." He slid a separate folder across the table. "Three alternatives: conservative, moderate, aggressive. Each with detailed projections, implementation schedules, and risk analysis."

Adrian arched an eyebrow. "Impressive. But do they account for external market volatility?"

"Of course," Eli replied smoothly. "You'll find the data includes competitor moves, seasonal fluctuations, and potential supply chain disruptions."

Flinching slightly, Adrian tilted his chair away. This one carried an edge, clean, deliberate moves, nothing wasted. It bothered him to think it, yet Eli Navarro? Definitely someone who left marks without trying.

Quiet settled between them, just for a breath. Each scanning the papers, yet tension hummed like wire pulled too tight. A shift in posture, a whisper of paper, everything louder than it should be.

Then, it happened.

A flicker passed between them when Eli stretched across the desk, fingers inching toward the stray calculator near Adrian's elbow. A touch, skin against skin, light but lingering just long enough to blur intention. Heat rose in Adrian, uninvited, sharp under the flat glare of overhead lights. He pulled back almost without moving, body tense, yet his gaze stayed fixed, caught, refusing to let go.

"You move quick," Adrian remarked, nearly offhand, yet his words held a quiet tightness beneath.

Smooth," Eli said, fingers resting on the folder just past normal. "Ready matters too. Fast but sloppy? That gets you nowhere. You've seen it, Vale."

Adrian's jaw tightened. "Careful, Navarro. That tone doesn't earn you points here."

"Nor does arrogance," Eli countered, voice smooth, eyes locked on Adrian's. "But apparently, it's common around here."

A small laugh slipped out, steady on purpose, masking the quick beat beneath his ribs. It annoyed him how something could stir inside at all. "Fair point," he said

Strategy came up next, followed by forecasts along with backup plans. Words flew like fencing blades, quick back and forth, nobody backing down. Underneath it all, pressure built without a sound clear, present, locked in silence. A look here, a shift in posture there, both hiding what they refused to name.

A silence broke when Adrian pointed at the paper. One detail had slipped through. He touched a spot near the bottom. Words came slow. A gap in timing stood out.

Forward he leaned, one brow lifting. "Saw that," a pause, then quieter, "meant to do it."

Was that on purpose? Adrian repeated, sounding surprised.

"Yes. You tend to overlook variables that might not fit your models perfectly. I've accounted for them," Eli replied evenly. "If you'd like, I can show you the impact."

A quiet tension settled over Adrian's face, his mouth tightening into silence. Arguing rose in him like heat, an urge to take control sparking behind his ribs yet something else held him back: the odd way Eli unsettled him, grating on one nerve while pulling at another. Stillness won, for now.

Halfway through the afternoon light, Chloe slipped by again, hushed words about schedules brushing the air. The second visit earned silence. Adrian looked away. Interruptions were unwelcome. Still, Eli's presence felt necessary. Not done with that quiet company.

Something about Adrian watching made Eli move careful with the papers. The air between them shifted, thin but sharp, like a wire pulled tight across silence. Not comfortable. Never said so out loud either. Still, each motion stayed measured, exact, as if routine could mask what stirred beneath.

After a pause, Adrian leaned back, his arms folded. "We go over those bold forecasts tomorrow," he said. Get ready. That was it

Ready when needed, Eli said while tucking the file inside his case. Always have been

For a moment, Adrian stayed quiet. His eyes followed Eli walking out, hips shifting just slightly with each stride a small thing, yet somehow grating. The way he moved stuck in Adrian's mind longer than it needed to.

The moment the latch snapped closed, Adrian let his breath go, fingers curling tight. Truth was, he didn't want to say it out loud, yet Eli Navarro had gotten under his skin. No shouting, no slick talk, just skill, quiet certainty, a flicker of defiance that pricked at him.

Far beneath the surface, Adrian sensed it, this wasn't an ending. Instead, a quiet certainty settled: what just happened was merely the first breath.
