Chapter 3

"Read the bottom line, Evelyn."

I stared at the glossy bank statements resting on my lap. The cold morning wind whipped through the enclosed psychiatric garden, snapping the edges of the paper against my knuckles.

"Three point two million," I read aloud.

"Keep going," Arthur instructed. He leaned against the rusted chain-link fence, checking his silver watch.

"Paid to Horizon Marine." I looked up, the harsh daylight stinging my eyes. "They bought a boat?"

"A seventy-foot luxury yacht."

"Who authorized this? Liam?"

"Look at the signature line."

I flipped to the second page. The ink was a messy scrawl, but the name was unmistakable. Noah Thorne.

"My son."

"He used your black card. Your daughter co-signed the delivery manifest for the interior furnishings. Two hundred thousand in custom Italian leather seating alone."

"Mia is twelve," I argued, the words tasting like ash. "She doesn't know what a delivery manifest is."

"She knows how to pick out silk curtains. Fifty thousand dollars' worth, to be exact. Charged yesterday afternoon."

My eyes locked onto the string of zeros. They blurred, then sharpened. Seven zeros. A lifetime of my father's hard work, bled out in a single afternoon by the children I carried.

"Who is the title registered to?" I asked, my voice dropping an octave.

"Chloe Davis."

My jaw tightened. My teeth ground together so hard a sharp ache shot up into my temples. My breathing grew shallow, the icy air barely filling my lungs.

Noah and Mia. My children. I had spent eighteen years building a world for them. I drove them to every game, packed every lunch, and dried every tear. Now, they were using my money to buy a floating palace for the woman sleeping with their father.

"They knew," I whispered.

"They didn't just know," Arthur corrected. "They funded the honeymoon."

Any residual warmth I held for my family vanished. The fierce, protective maternal instinct that had defined my entire adult life fractured, then shattered entirely. Only cold, hard numbers remained.

Arthur reached into the leather duffel bag at his feet. He pulled out a hanger draped in plastic and tossed it onto the concrete bench beside me.

"What is this?"

"Your armor."

I ripped the plastic away. A tailored, crimson power suit. The color of fresh blood. The fabric was heavy, expensive.

"The medical board just signed off on your release," Arthur stated, holding up a thick manila folder. "Turns out, threatening to audit the hospital director's offshore accounts produces a miraculously fast re-evaluation. You are legally sane."

"And Liam?"

"He doesn't know yet. He's busy giving a press conference about your tragic decline."

I stood up from the bench. The rough cotton of the hospital gown scratched against my skin, a lingering reminder of the cage my husband tried to put me in.

I reached for the knot at the back of my neck.

"Turn around, Arthur."

He smirked, turning his back to the bench. "Make it fast. We have a schedule."

I pulled the knot loose. I let the grey gown drop to the dirt. The freezing air raised goosebumps on my bare arms, but I didn't shiver. I pulled the crisp white silk blouse over my shoulders, buttoning it with quick, sharp movements. Next came the trousers. They fit perfectly, hugging my frame. Finally, I slipped on the crimson jacket.

The stiff fabric rubbed against my skin, structured and unyielding. It erased the helpless, drugged victim Liam had tried to create. It felt like power. It felt like absolute control.

"You can turn around," I said.

Arthur faced me. His eyes swept over the red suit, a glint of approval flashing in his dark gaze.

"Better," he noted.

"Much." I smoothed the lapels. "Where are my children right now?"

"Skipping school. They took a private car to the marina to inspect the new purchase with their future stepmother."

"And Liam?"

"Meeting with the trust board. Trying to expedite the asset transfer."

I picked up the bank statements, folding them into a tight square, and shoved them into my blazer pocket.

"We need to stop Liam," I said.

"My litigators are already filing the injunction," Arthur replied. "By noon, Liam's access to your accounts will freeze. But a legal freeze is quiet. You don't strike me as someone who wants to be quiet today."

"I want to be deafening."

We walked toward the rusted iron gates of Fairview Institute. A security guard stood by the keypad, his eyes widening as he saw me in the red suit.

"Hey! Patient 402 isn't cleared for the courtyard exit," the guard barked, stepping into our path. He reached for the radio on his belt.

Arthur didn't break his stride. He shoved the manila folder directly into the guard's chest.

"Court-ordered release. If you delay my client for even ten seconds, I will personally sue you for false imprisonment."

The guard fumbled with the paperwork. He glanced at the official seal, then looked at my face. I didn't blink. I simply stared him down until he stepped aside, punching a code into the keypad.

The heavy metal gates groaned open.

I stepped past the threshold. No alarms sounded. No paramedics rushed out to grab my arms. I was out.

A sleek black Maybach idled at the curb. The tinted windows hid the interior, but the engine purred with quiet menace.

Arthur walked to the driver's side and opened the door.

"I prefer to drive myself," he said, sliding behind the wheel.

I opened the passenger door and sank into the plush leather. The contrast from the mildewed mattress of Room 402 was jarring. I ran my hand over the smooth armrest, my mind calculating the hours I had lost.

Arthur rolled down his window, letting the crisp morning air flood the cabin. He tapped the glowing navigation screen on the dashboard.

"Where to, Mrs. Thorne?"

I didn't hesitate. I didn't think about the school run, or the PTA meetings, or the family dinners that used to define my existence. I thought about the zeros on that paper.

"GPS coordinates," I said, my tone ice-cold. "Latitude 33.98, Longitude minus 118.44."

Arthur's fingers flew across the digital keyboard. The map zoomed in, dropping a red pin on the coastline.

"The Marina del Rey Yacht Club," Arthur read aloud. He shifted the car into drive. "Going to look at a boat?"

"No," I replied, staring straight ahead through the windshield. "I'm going to sink one."
