Among the harvest festival stalls, Eva hopes to spend a simple day with Avayah, away from pack politics. Reed's arrival ends that hope. He sees the girl's eyes and declares her his daughter, although Eva tells him she is not. When he refuses to let them leave, Eva must protect her child while facing a former mate who mistakes possession for truth. He is taking them toward a confrontation with the life she has built as Lycan Prince Matthias's Luna.

My Rejected Mate Learned the Lycan Heir Was His Daughter Chapter 1

The harvest festival smelled like cinnamon and wood smoke. I walked between the crowded stalls with Avayah's small hand tucked in mine, letting the noise and color wash over us. It felt good to be anonymous here. Just another mother and daughter browsing handmade jewelry and overpriced festival food. No titles. No pack politics. No one bowing or watching.

Avayah tugged my hand and pointed at a booth selling painted wooden toys. "Mama, look! The wolf has flowers!"

I smiled. "Do you want it?"

She nodded, her silver-green eyes wide and bright. The vendor wrapped it in brown paper while I paid. Somewhere behind us, I felt the subtle presence of Matthias's warriors keeping their distance. He'd insisted. I hadn't argued. Old habits die hard, even when you're a Lycan Prince's Luna.

We rounded the corner past a booth selling kettle corn, and I stopped.

Reed Coleman stood fifteen feet away.

For a moment, I didn't recognize him. Six years changes people. He'd filled out through the shoulders, his jawline sharper, his dark silver hair cropped shorter than I remembered. Then his scent hit me—burnt cedar and dominance—and my body remembered before my mind caught up. My wolf stirred, not with longing but with the dull ache of an old wound prodded.

Beside him stood Kamryn Marshall. She wore a cream-colored dress that probably cost more than the entire festival, her arm looped through Reed's like she owned him. Her smile was practiced and sweet.

Reed's eyes swept the crowd and landed on me. I watched recognition flicker across his face—confusion first, then something sharper. His gaze dropped to Avayah.

I felt the shift in his posture before he moved. His wolf was awake now.

"Eva Hill," Reed said. His voice carried over the festival noise, loud enough that nearby wolves turned to look. "I didn't think you'd have the nerve to show your face on pack lands."

I met his gaze and said nothing. Avayah pressed closer to my side, her small fingers tightening around mine.

Reed took a step forward. His eyes locked on Avayah's face—specifically, her eyes. I saw the exact moment his delusion assembled itself. His expression shifted from surprise to something uglier. Certainty.

"Those eyes," he said slowly. "We used to play that stupid game. Remember? Predicting what our pups would look like." He looked at me, then back at Avayah. "Silver-green. That's what we said."

My stomach went cold. Not with fear. With the weary recognition of a man constructing a lie he desperately wanted to believe.

"You're insane," I said quietly.

Kamryn stepped forward, her voice dripping false concern. "Eva, sweetie, if you were struggling, you should have reached out. Running away and raising a child alone in rogue territory—" She shook her head. "It's not safe. It's not fair to her."

I felt the crowd's attention like a physical weight. Wolves from three different packs, all watching, all listening. Reed's Alpha aura pulsed outward, a low vibration that made the nearest wolves flinch and drop their eyes. I didn't move.

"You abandoned your pack," Reed said, his voice hardening. "You went rogue. And now you're here, parading my daughter around like—"

"She's not yours," I said.

Reed's jaw tightened. "You fled six years ago. Pregnant. With my heir. Do you think I'm stupid?"

I almost laughed. The answer was yes, but I didn't say it.

Instead, I turned to leave. I wasn't doing this. Not here. Not in front of Avayah.

Reed raised his hand. Two enforcers stepped out of the crowd—large, stone-faced wolves I didn't recognize. They moved to block my path.

"You're coming with me," Reed said. His Alpha tone rippled through the words, forcing wolves around us to their knees. I felt the pressure against my chest but didn't bow. Lycan-bonded mates don't submit to lesser Alphas. Reed's eyes narrowed when I stayed upright.

"I'm en route to Shadowveil Pack," Reed continued. "Alliance meeting with the Lycan Prince. You're coming along. We'll discuss your... situation... on the way."

I felt Avayah trembling against my leg. I looked down at her, then back at Reed. "You're making a mistake."

"The only mistake," Reed said coldly, "was letting you run in the first place."

The enforcers moved. One grabbed my arm. The other reached for Avayah. She yelped, and something sharp and protective flared in my chest. I started to pull away, but the enforcer's grip tightened, his fingers digging into my wrist. Avayah cried out as the second enforcer lifted her off the ground.

"Mama!"

"Don't hurt her," I said, my voice flat and deadly.

Reed gestured toward the convoy parked at the edge of the festival grounds. "Walk. Or I'll have them carry you both."

I met his eyes one last time. There was nothing there I recognized. No flicker of doubt. No hesitation. Just the smug certainty of a man who believed the universe owed him answers.

I let them guide me toward the vehicles. Avayah sobbed in the enforcer's arms, reaching for me. I kept my expression smooth, my breathing even. My hand moved once—tucking a loose strand of hair behind my ear.

Inside the lead vehicle, Reed sat across from me, his posture relaxed, his eyes sharp. Avayah curled into my side, her face buried against my ribs. I wrapped my arm around her and stroked her hair.

Reed watched us. "She has your nose," he said. "But those eyes. Those are mine."

I said nothing. I simply held my daughter and waited.

Wait for Shadowveil. Wait for Matthias. Wait for the moment Reed's delusion shattered against the only truth that mattered.

I was not his. I never had been.

And he was about to learn exactly what that meant.
