Chapter 6

## Chapter 6:

The silence in the gymnasium was suffocating. Every eye in the room darted back and forth between the two titans of the district: Dean Arthur, the untouchable varsity captain, and Luke Vance, the handsome transfer rival who had just single-handedly disrupted Dean's court.

Luke didn't seem to care about the sudden drop in temperature. He kept his attention entirely on Rose, gently dusting off the edge of her leather binder before handing it back to her.

"If you're looking for a place to study, Rose, my team has the private seminar room booked in the West wing," Luke said, his voice smooth and deliberately loud enough to carry across the quiet gym. He smiled down at her, a princely charm radiating from his tall frame. "You don't need to waste your time waiting around for people who don't respect your schedule."

Rose tightened her grip on her binder, her brown eyes darting toward the court. She didn't want Luke's protection, and she certainly didn't want to become the center of a varsity turf war. "Thanks, Vance. But I can handle my own project."

Down on the hardwood, the heavy, rhythmic *thud* of a basketball hitting the floor shattered the quiet.

Dean walked toward them, his sneakers squeaking sharply against the polished wood. He didn't rush. He moved with a slow, predatory stride, his dark eyes locked onto Luke. The basketball was tucked securely under his left arm, his right hand buried in the pocket of his athletic shorts.

"I don't remember inviting outsiders to our practice, Vance," Dean said, his voice dropping into a low, gravelly register that made the girls in the front row of the bleachers hold their breath. He stopped just two feet away, his broad shoulders easily blocking out the light from the gym windows.

Luke turned slowly, facing Dean without an ounce of fear. A lazy, confident grin spread across his face. "I was just doing your job for you, Arthur. Your dogs were barking at the Class President, and you were too busy taking practice shots to notice. Or maybe you're just going blind in your senior year?"

Dean’s jaw clenched, a dangerous, sharp glint flashing in his dark eyes. He didn't look at Rose once, treating her like a prize being disputed rather than a human being. "What happens in my gym is my business. And Woods is my partner. If she has an issue with my schedule, she can tell me herself. She doesn't need a charity defense attorney from the second-tier district."

The "second-tier" jab hit its mark. The friendly warmth in Luke’s expression vanished, replaced by a fierce, competitive hardness. He stepped closer to Dean, their heights practically matching, creating a suffocating wall of tension right in front of Rose.

"We'll see who's second-tier when the tournament starts next month, Arthur," Luke whispered, his voice dangerously calm. "But until then, keep your crowd away from Rose. If I see anyone pulling her hair again, I won't just stop the fight. I'll handle it personally."

"Are you threatening me on my own court?" Dean purred, his posture turning rigid, ready to strike.

"Enough!" Rose's voice sliced through the testosterone-fueled air like an icy blade.

She stepped directly between the two of them, her chest heaving with absolute fury. She looked at Luke first, her expression severe. "Vance, thank you for the papers. Now go back to your team. I don't need a bodyguard."

Luke blinked, surprised by her sharpness, but his soft smile returned quickly. "Alright, Rose. If you say so. I'll see you in AP Calculus tomorrow." He cast one last, lingering glare at Dean before turning on his heel and walking out of the double doors, his departure drawing a collective exhale from the bleachers.

Rose didn't waste a single second. The moment Luke was gone, she spun around to face Dean.

The varsity teammates were still watching from the center line, their grins faded now that the situation had turned genuinely volatile. Dean stood his ground, staring down at her with a cold, unreadable intensity.

"You are an absolute savage, Arthur," Rose hissed, her voice a fierce, trembling whisper so only he could hear. "You watched those girls attack me. You let your friends laugh. All because your massive, pathetic ego couldn't handle being told what to do in front of your little fan club."

Dean let out a short, humorless breath. He leaned down, bringing his face so close she could see the sweat glistening on his forehead, his minty breath hitting her collarbone. "Let's get one thing straight, Woods. I didn't tell Chloe to touch you. But I'm not your knight in shining armor. You wanted the 100-Meter Rule. You wanted us to be ghosts to each other at school. That means when you get into trouble, you're on your own."

"Fine," Rose spat, her eyes burning with a venomous hatred that eclipsed everything else. She slammed her binder against his chest, making the basketball slip from his grip and bounce away into the dark corner of the gym. "Then let's keep it strictly professional. The library closes in an hour. If you aren't in the private study room in five minutes with your laptop open, I will write the entire methodology myself, submit it to Harrison tonight, and leave your name completely off the draft. Let's see how your division rank looks with a zero on a thirty-percent thesis."

She didn't wait for his reply. She turned around and marched out of the gym, her shoulders squared, her invisible crown restored.

Behind her, Dean didn't chase after the basketball. He stood frozen in the middle of the empty baseline, his fists clenched tight at his sides, his breathing shallow as he stared at the heavy wooden doors she had just slammed shut. The arrogant king of Oakridge High had just been given an ultimatum, and for the first time in his life, he didn't have a counter-move.
