The 100-Meter Rule

9.2 / 10.0
Two lives are bound by a single boundary: The 100-Meter Rule. In this modern young adult romance, neither dares cross the line, yet every stolen glance and charged moment pulls them closer to the edge. Desire builds in the space between what is allowed and what is forbidden, until the rule meant to protect them becomes the one thing threatening to break them both. One reckless night could shatter every line they swore to keep.

The 100-Meter Rule Chapter 1

The digital leaderboard in the main courtyard of Oakridge High never lied, and it never took pity.

Every Monday at 7:45 AM, the massive projector hummed to life, casting the top fifty senior class rankings against the pristine, ivy-covered brick wall. To the rest of the student body, it was a spectator sport—a chance to whisper about who was sliding down and who was climbing up. To Rose Woods, it was a weekly public trial.

Rose stood a few feet back from the crowd, her fingers tightening around the canvas straps of her backpack until her knuckles turned white. The morning humidity was already thick, sticking her uniform collar to the back of her neck, but she felt entirely frozen.

> OAKRIDGE HIGH SENIOR LEADERBOARD

> 1. Dean Arthur (GPA: 4.65)

> 2. Rose Woods (GPA: 4.62)

>

Three hundredths of a point.

That was the microscopic distance between her and the top spot. Three hundredths of a point separated Rose—the scholarship kid who survived on three hours of sleep, generic caffeine pills, and a suffocating fear of the future—from Dean Arthur.

If Rose lost her ranking, she lost the institutional scholarship that paid for her tuition. If she lost that, her dream of attending a top-tier university away from this suffocating town evaporated. Her parents worked overlapping shifts at the local manufacturing plant just to keep their leaking roof over their heads; they couldn't afford a single credit hour. For Rose, those numbers on the wall weren't a badge of honor. They were a lifeline.

"Still second place, huh?" a voice whispered nearby. It was Chloe, the student council secretary, clutching a stack of morning announcements. "Don't worry, Rose. You'll get him on the midterms."

Rose forced her shoulders to drop, smoothing down the front of her pleated skirt. "I'm not worried," she said, her voice a practiced shield of calm confidence. "I'm just calculating how much extra credit I need to bury him."

But as Chloe walked away toward the office, Rose let out a shaky breath. She pulled out her battered planner, her pages completely covered in meticulous black ink. Time blocks, assignment due dates, study sessions—her entire life was micro-managed down to the minute. She had to run the student council budget meeting at lunch, finish an AP Literature essay by third period, and head straight to her part-time retail job the second the final bell rang. There was no room for error. No room to breathe.

"Don't stare too hard, Woods. You'll burn a hole through the brick."

The voice was low, smooth, and laced with a lazy, effortless arrogance that made the hairs on the back of Rose’s neck stand up.

The sudden hush that fell over the surrounding courtyard was an instant giveaway. The sea of freshmen and sophomores parted naturally, clearing a path.

Dean Arthur stood a few paces behind her. One strap of his backpack was slung carelessly over a broad shoulder, and his uniform tie was loosened just enough to violate the dress code without getting him detention. He looked infuriatingly unbothered by the early morning heat, his dark hair falling perfectly across his forehead, his jawline sharp enough to cut glass. In his right hand, he spun a basketball on the tip of his finger with a practiced, rhythmic hum.

He was the school's golden boy, the varsity captain, and the son of a man whose name was engraved on the school's new science wing. He didn't have to study until his eyes bled. He just *succeeded*.

Rose turned around slowly, her face masking the storm brewing in her chest. She forced a polite, icy smile—the one she reserved specifically for him.

"Good morning, Dean," she said, her voice clipping each syllable. "I see you managed to drag yourself out of bed in time for first period. I was worried your ego might have gotten too heavy for your legs to carry today."

Dean stopped spinning the ball, catching it seamlessly with one palm. A faint, mocking smirk tugged at the corner of his lips. He took a single step closer, invading her personal space just enough to force her to tilt her chin up to meet his gaze.

"My ego is doing just fine, Madame President," he murmured, his dark eyes dropping briefly to the leaderboard before locking back onto hers. "Still holding down the number two spot, I see. Comforting. It's nice to know some things in this world never change."

The jab hit exactly where he knew it would. To the rest of Oakridge High, they were just the two smartest kids in the grade—intense, unyielding rivals who had been trading venomous barbs since freshman year. No one dared to get between them. They operated in two completely different solar systems, crossing paths only to clash.

But as Rose looked into Dean’s cool, unreadable eyes, a phantom memory flickered in the back of her mind—a memory of a boy with grass-stained knees who used to scrape the crusts off her sandwiches in elementary school, a boy who had promised they would always be on the same team.

Don't look back, she reminded herself harshly, burying the memory deep beneath a wall of ice. That boy left you behind the second he moved to the other side of town.

"Enjoy the view while it lasts, Arthur," Rose said, her voice dropping to a dangerous, quiet whisper as a few cheerleaders lingered nearby, watching them curiously. "Midterms are next week. I'm taking that number one spot, and I'm going to make sure everyone watches you fall."

Dean didn't flinch. Instead, his smirk widened, a dark, fiercely competitive spark igniting in his eyes. He leaned down slightly, bringing his face level with hers, close enough that she could smell the faint scent of mint and rain on his jacket.

"I'd love to see you try, Rose," he whispered back, using her first name like a dare. "But we both know you're too wound tight to ever catch up to me. Relax a little. Second place suits you."

Before she could snap back, the warning bell rang, its loud electronic buzz shattering the tension between them. Dean straightened up, gave her a mock two-finger salute, and turned on his heel. He started walking toward the gym, spinning the basketball on his finger once more, completely unfazed by the exchange.

Rose stood frozen for a second, her chest heaving as she swallowed down a wave of pure, unadulterated frustration. She hated him. She hated how easy everything was for him, how he looked down on her from his perfect, privileged pedestal, and how he seemed to know exactly which buttons to push to make her lose her mind.

Pulling her black pen from her pocket, she opened her planner and aggressively crossed out 7:45 AM: Check Leaderboard.

She didn't have time to let Dean Arthur get under her skin. She had a life to build, a future to secure, and a family to help survive.

She had no idea that by tonight, a literal storm would brew over their neighborhood, and the fragile walls separating her world from his would come crashing down entirely.
