Chapter 2

Julian crouched on the damp hardwood floor. He gathered the fallen towels, stacking them meticulously against his knee. He stood, his expression completely guarded.

"Do you need me to stay in this room tonight?" Julian asked.

"No," I told him. I stepped away from the makeshift pillow wall dividing the mattress. "Four years ago, I lost a pregnancy in this house. At eighteen weeks."

Nathan shifted his weight, opening his mouth to speak, but I raised a hand to stop him. "I will decide what else gets shared, and when."

Julian placed the towels on the edge of the mattress. His jaw tightened. "We have been together for eighteen months, Elena. We spent last weekend looking at joint checking accounts. You let me believe you had never been pregnant."

"That was between me and Nathan," I argued.

The words hung in the dim light. I had just drawn a circle around my ex-husband and locked my boyfriend out.

Camille turned her attention from the bed to the bedside table. "Did you keep anything, Nate?"

Nathan’s knuckles brushed the wood of the drawer. He shoved it flush against the frame. The sharp click echoed down the hall.

Camille did not yell. Her voice was terrifyingly calm. "Now I know you did not forget. You just never let me see."

She turned on her heel and walked out. Julian followed a moment later, closing the door behind him.

By seven the next morning, the storm had passed, leaving a gray, bruised sky. I stood in the kitchen holding a black marker. I pressed the tip against a yellow legal pad. The ink bled into the paper.

"Rule one," I announced to the room, writing in harsh block letters. "No explaining the past for someone else. Rule two. No using house repairs to manufacture private time. Rule three. No entering another person's bedroom."

I paused, glancing at Julian, who sat at the island with a mug of tea. "Rule four. No treating our current partners as an audience."

Nathan walked in holding a cup of black coffee. He read the list over my shoulder. "Add a fifth. Anyone can pause a conversation at any time."

Camille leaned against the doorframe. She wore her wool coat, her car keys already in her hand. "Add a sixth. No treating nostalgia as harmless."

Julian pushed his empty glass aside, his eyes fixed on me. "And the seventh. Answers about a relationship must come directly from the person involved."

I tore the sheet off the pad and slapped it onto the refrigerator with a heavy metal magnet. The bottom right corner curled upward. Nathan reached out to smooth the paper. His fingers stopped a fraction of an inch from my knuckles. He pulled his hand back, letting the paper curl.

The front doorbell rang.

Owen marched inside, tracking mud onto the foyer runner. He held up a digital moisture meter, his brow furrowed under a worn baseball cap.

"Guest room is at thirty-one percent," the contractor said, tapping the screen. "Way past habitable. The water is tracking along the joists, straight toward the locked room at the end of the hall."

I followed him upstairs. We stopped in front of the door with the faded sea-glass paint on the knob. The nursery.

"I need to get in there," Owen said, jiggling the locked handle.

"I do not have the key," I told him, crossing my arms to ward off the chill.

"Yes, you do." Nathan stepped up beside me. He reached into his pocket and held out his palm. The sea-blue brass key rested against his skin.

I stared at the metal. The jagged edge caught the hallway light. "Why do you have that?"

"Because you did not take it," he replied, pushing the choice back onto me.

Julian stepped between us, eyeing my trembling fingers. "Elena is freezing. We do not need to open this today. We can deal with it later."

"If we wait, the water damage spreads to the floorboards," Nathan countered, his lawyer tone returning. "This is a structural issue, Julian."

I looked at Owen, ignoring both men. "If we wait twelve hours, is the risk manageable?"

"Barely," Owen grunted, scratching his chin. "But yes."

"Then we open it this afternoon."

Camille stepped forward. "I will go in first and take the insurance photos. I am the only one here not choking on old memories."

"No," I said instantly.

Camille tilted her head. "Are you keeping me out to protect a child who never lived, or to protect what you and Nathan still share?"

The question sliced clean through the hallway tension. She had found the exact center of the mess. This room was a vault, and neither she nor Julian had the combination.

Owen knelt by the doorframe, digging a pocketknife into the baseboard. The wood flaked away like wet cardboard, exposing a dark, spongy interior.

"The frame is swelling," Owen announced, standing up and wiping his blade on his jeans. "I have to open the drywall to check for black mold. If the moisture rate climbs, the buyers will trigger the escrow clause. They can demand we expand the hundred and sixty thousand dollar repair budget."

I rubbed my temples, feeling a headache forming. "Fine. We open the door. But all four of us must be present, and Nathan and I verify any personal items first."

Julian backed away from the door. "I will stay in the downstairs study today. Call me when you are ready."

Camille zipped her coat up to her chin. "I booked a short-term rental in town for tonight. I need space."

Nathan turned to her. "I can drive you. We can talk."

"No, Nate," she said, her voice entirely flat. "I do not want you there."

They walked downstairs, leaving me with Nathan and the contractor. Julian's quiet retreat and Camille's sharp exit proved the same point. Their methods differed, but both had drawn a hard boundary.

I grabbed a clear plastic maintenance bag from Owen's toolkit. I dropped the brass key inside, sealed the top, and signed my name across the white label with the marker.

I held the bag out. Nathan took a pen from his pocket and signed his name right below mine. The thin plastic separated our fingertips. It looked exactly like the signature page of our divorce decree.

Owen slapped a bright red sticker over the seam of the locked door. Large black letters spelled out: 8:00 AM DEMO.

"I will be back with the sledgehammer," Owen said, packing his tools. He pointed at the damp drywall. "If there is something hidden behind that wall, water has been soaking it for four straight years."
