Chapter 3

At exactly eight o'clock, Owen clamped his heavy shears over the clear maintenance bag. The thick plastic split with a sharp snap.

I reached inside and pulled out the sea-blue brass key. The metal felt ice-cold against my palm. I pushed it into the lock of the nursery door and turned. The tumbler clicked.

I pushed the door open.

No baby furniture sat inside. Just a single sea-glass paint sample board nailed to the center of the far wall. A damp cardboard box rested in the corner. Owen stepped past me, pressing his digital moisture meter against the baseboard. The red numbers flashed thirty-one percent.

Dark water stains tracked across the floorboards, cutting a jagged path straight through the exact spot where we had planned to put the crib.

I walked over to the cardboard box and pulled back the soggy flaps. Inside lay a faded plastic hospital band and a crumpled photocopy of an eighteen-week ultrasound.

Nathan stepped into the room. He held the sealed envelope he had taken from the master bedroom drawer last night.

"I brought this to the courthouse," Nathan said, his voice stripping away the silence. "The day the judge finalized the divorce. I waited by the west exit for thirty-eight minutes."

I stared at the envelope in his hand. "I waited by the east stairs for forty-three."

The numbers hung in the damp air between us. The simple narrative of who abandoned who first vanished, replaced by the crushing weight of a missed connection.

I reached into the box, picked up the plastic hospital band, and shoved it deep into my pocket.

"Keep the letter," I told him. "The words you wrote back then cannot answer the questions I have today."

Nathan did not argue. He set the sealed envelope down on the sea-glass paint sample board, leaving my boundary intact.

Julian arrived an hour later, still wearing his dark scrubs from the hospital night shift. He walked into the kitchen and immediately spotted the ultrasound copy resting on the granite counter.

He did not pick the paper up. He turned his body entirely toward me.

"Can I touch you?" Julian asked.

"Yes," I answered, bracing myself for a barrage of medical questions.

He reached out and wrapped his fingers lightly around my wrist. He did not check my pulse. He did not ask for a surgical history or demand to know the exact nature of the complications.

"I need to know if you ever plan to let me meet the whole version of you," Julian said quietly.

"I do not owe anyone a trauma file," I snapped, pulling my arm back a fraction of an inch.

Julian did not tighten his grip. "I am not asking for a file, Elena. The past is yours. But the future is not a file. If we are going to build a life together, I need to know which doors are permanently locked, and which ones you are just afraid to open."

I opened my mouth, but my throat tightened. My heel slid backward across the tile, retreating toward the hallway leading to the nursery.

Julian tracked the movement of my foot. He let go of my wrist entirely.

"I am canceling the trip to meet my parents on day twenty," he announced.

"You are punishing me," I argued, my voice rising.

"No." Julian grabbed his travel mug from the counter. "I am pausing us. I refuse to use the next step in our relationship to cover up a hole in the floor."

By noon, Camille had taken over the first floor. She read Maisie's email regarding the day-four buyer progress walkthrough and decided the house needed staging. She dragged the heavy white dining table directly in front of the ocean-facing window.

"The lighting here is perfect," Camille announced, smoothing a white linen runner over the wood. "Honestly, this space would work for a small wedding."

Her eyes did not look at the ocean view. They locked onto the plastic bag holding my ultrasound photo, sitting on the edge of the kitchen island.

"This house is not right for a wedding," Nathan said from the hallway archway.

Camille stopped smoothing the fabric. She folded the edge of the runner until the crease formed a razor-sharp line.

"Not right for any wedding, Nate?" Camille asked, her tone dangerously even. "Or not right for mine?"

Nathan stared at the floorboards. The silence stretched until the room felt entirely devoid of oxygen. He did not say he opposed marriage. He just refused to give her the reassurance she demanded.

Camille turned her gaze to me. "Would you mind if I married him here, Elena?"

I refused to play the referee. "You should ask him where he wants to start, instead of asking me if I am willing to lose."

The words stung her. I saw her jaw tighten, but she finally shifted her focus away from me and pinned it entirely on Nathan.

Maisie's text arrived at five. The buyer's representative required both owners to attend the progress walkthrough in business attire and verify the repair logs on camera.

Julian had already left, called back to the emergency department for a major trauma intake. Camille went down to the basement to document the electrical panel for the buyers.

I stood in the master bedroom, struggling with the back of my navy silk dress. Nathan stood near the closet, wearing a crisp charcoal suit.

"Just help me with the zipper," I said, turning my back to him.

"Tell me to stop, and I stop," he replied.

He stepped close. Two fingers pinched the metal tab. He pulled it upward. The metal teeth glided smoothly until they hit the middle of my ribs. Right over the six-centimeter surgical scar hidden beneath the fabric.

The zipper snagged.

I looked in the vanity mirror. Nathan's hand hovered a millimeter above the silk. He did not touch my skin, but his knuckles rested exactly over the spot I hated most.

His chest barely moved. The intense proximity sent a sudden, unwanted heat straight up my neck.

"Keep going," I ordered. My voice sounded harsh, a command meant to steady my own nerves.

He yanked the zipper to the top, then immediately took two large steps backward.

"Does he know you almost died?" Nathan asked, his voice dropping to a low, fractured whisper.

The bedroom door swung open.

Camille stood in the doorway. She stared at the vanity mirror, her eyes tracking Nathan's raised hand, then snapping to my pale reflection.

She did not yell. She walked forward and dropped a faded manila folder onto the vanity table. The bold black letters on the tab read: Maternity Surgical Unit.

"Maybe tonight," Camille said quietly, "you two should just tell us everything."
