Chapter 37

The name appeared before the face did.

Elena Rossi.

Guest speaker.

International venture strategist.

Partnered with the Moretti Global Advisory Council.

Aria stared at the announcement board longer than necessary.

The surname alone made her pulse shift.

Rossi.

She didn't know why.

But something about it felt deliberate.

The auditorium was packed.

Elite students.

Board observers.

Investors.

This wasn't a random lecture.

This was positioning.

Aria slid into her seat quietly.

Leo hadn't mentioned this.

Which meant one of two things:

He didn't know.

Or he knew and didn't think it mattered.

The lights dimmed.

And then she walked on stage.

Elena Rossi.

Tall.

Polished.

Effortlessly elegant.

Dark hair pulled back in a low, sleek style.

Minimal jewelry.

Confident posture.

The kind of woman who didn't chase rooms - rooms adjusted to her.

Aria's stomach tightened slightly.

Not jealousy.

Recognition.

This woman belonged in Leo's world.

Elena smiled lightly as she took the mic.

"Good afternoon."

Her voice was smooth.

Controlled.

"I've had the pleasure of working alongside the Moretti advisory circle for years now."

There it was.

Not subtle.

Aria's fingers curled slightly in her lap.

Elena continued speaking about markets, legacy strategy, generational wealth adaptation.

She was brilliant.

Sharp.

Unemotional.

Everything Moretti valued.

Halfway through-

Elena's gaze swept the room.

And paused.

On Leo.

A faint smile touched her lips.

Personal.

Aria saw it.

And Leo-

Didn't react.

Which almost made it worse.

After the lecture ended, clusters formed around Elena.

She handled attention easily.

Then-

She walked directly toward Leo.

Aria's heart slowed in that eerie way before impact.

"Leonardo," Elena said softly.

Not Leo.

Leonardo.

The name only family and history used.

"Elena," he replied evenly.

No surprise.

So he knew.

"You didn't tell me you were guest lecturing," he added.

She tilted her head slightly.

"I wasn't certain you'd attend."

That wasn't an answer.

Her eyes flickered briefly toward Aria.

Measured.

Assessing.

"And this must be Aria," Elena said smoothly.

Not asking.

Knowing.

Aria stood.

Composed.

"Yes."

Elena extended her hand.

Her grip was firm.

Professional.

Warm.

But strategic warmth.

"I've heard about you," Elena said.

Aria met her gaze calmly.

"I'm sure you have."

A faint flicker passed through Elena's eyes.

Interesting.

She hadn't expected steel.

They moved toward a quieter corner of the courtyard.

Leo stood between them slightly, though subtly.

Protective instinct.

Elena noticed.

"You've caused quite a ripple," Elena said to Aria.

"I wasn't aware I was water," Aria replied softly.

Leo almost smiled.

Elena did smile.

Small.

Impressed.

"I admire confidence," Elena said. "It's rare."

"Authenticity tends to be," Aria responded.

Elena shifted her attention back to Leo.

"I'll be in the city for a while. Your father requested collaboration."

There it was.

Requested.

This wasn't coincidence.

This was placement.

"On what?" Leo asked evenly.

"Future alignment," Elena replied lightly.

Strategic wording.

Aria's chest tightened slightly.

Not because she felt threatened.

But because she understood what this was.

Elena wasn't just an ex.

She was legacy-approved.

History-aligned.

Moretti-compatible.

Later that evening, Aria didn't speak first.

She let the silence sit.

Leo watched her carefully.

"You're thinking."

"Yes."

He waited.

"Were you together?" she asked calmly.

"Yes."

No hesitation.

"How long?"

"Two years."

Her stomach dipped slightly.

"Serious?"

"Yes."

Silence.

"And?"

He didn't dodge it.

"Our families approved."

There it was.

The unspoken layer.

"And why did it end?" Aria asked softly.

"I chose differently."

Her eyes lifted.

"Meaning?"

"I refused to let my relationship be negotiated."

That landed.

So Elena had been structured.

Approved.

Aligned.

Aria's chest tightened again.

"Is she here because of you?" she asked.

"No."

"Is she here because of your father?"

A pause.

"Yes."

There it was.

No lies.

No cushioning.

"They're escalating socially now," Aria murmured.

"Yes."

She nodded slowly.

"They're showing me what 'compatible' looks like."

Leo stepped closer.

"They're showing me what they think control looks like."

She studied him carefully.

"Does it shake you?"

His answer came immediately.

"No."

"Not even a little?"

He stepped forward.

Lowered his voice.

"I already chose."

Her pulse stuttered.

But fear didn't fully disappear.

Because Elena Rossi wasn't loud.

She wasn't cruel.

She was dangerous in a different way.

She fit.

And fitting was powerful.

The next day, articles began circulating online.

Elena Rossi & Leonardo Moretti Reunite at Strategic Summit

Photos.

Angles.

Selective framing.

Elena standing slightly closer than necessary.

Leo expression neutral.

Speculation written carefully but suggestively.

Aria stared at her phone.

There it was.

Public pressure.

Image warfare.

Her phone buzzed.

Unknown number.

Again.

Compatibility is effortless.

Resistance is exhausting.

Her grip tightened.

They were testing insecurity now.

That night, Elena attended a private board dinner.

Leo was expected.

Aria wasn't invited.

Not accidentally.

Intentionally.

When Leo adjusted his cufflinks before leaving, Aria stood still in the bedroom doorway.

"Do you want me to go?" he asked quietly.

She hesitated.

"No."

"You're sure?"

"Yes."

Her voice was steady.

But her heart was racing.

He walked toward her.

Tipped her chin up gently.

"They can stage whatever narrative they want."

She swallowed.

"But?"

"But I don't rewrite my choices."

He leaned down slightly.

Rested his forehead against hers.

"You are not competing."

Her breath trembled slightly.

"I don't compete."

A small smirk touched his lips.

"I know."

He left.

And for the first time-

Aria felt the real test.

Not money.

Not scholarships.

Not threats.

But comparison.

And somewhere across the city-

Elena Rossi sat beside Moretti senior.

Poised.

Composed.

Strategic.

And when she glanced at Leo-

There was something unreadable in her expression.

Not longing.

Not jealousy.

Something more dangerous.

Calculation.
