Chapter 38

The invitation arrived in a velvet envelope.

Hand-delivered.

Cream cardstock. Gold embossing.

Moretti Strategic Partnership Dinner

Hosted by Alessandro Moretti

Honoring International Advisor Elena Rossi

Formal. Private. Select guests only.

Aria stared at it.

Her name wasn't printed.

It was handwritten.

Deliberate.

Leo stood across the living room, jaw tight.

"He's forcing a narrative," Leo said calmly.

"Or setting a stage," Aria replied.

"This isn't business," Leo added. "It's theatre."

She traced the gold lettering lightly.

"Then we don't let them control the script."

His eyes lifted to hers.

"You don't have to go."

She looked at him evenly.

"Yes, I do."

Silence.

He stepped closer.

"They will measure you."

"They already are."

"They'll provoke."

"Let them."

He studied her carefully.

"You're not intimidated."

"I'm not blind either," she said softly.

This wasn't about insecurity.

It was about territory.

And Aria wasn't backing away.

The venue was the Moretti estate.

Not the corporate wing.

The family wing.

Crystal chandeliers.

Old oil portraits.

Legacy breathing in the walls.

Aria stepped out of the car in a fitted black gown - minimal, structured, deliberate.

No excess jewelry.

No desperate glamour.

Power in simplicity.

Leo watched her for a moment before offering his arm.

"Ready?" he asked quietly.

"No," she replied honestly.

Then she took his arm anyway.

Inside, conversations dipped subtly when they entered.

Eyes shifted.

Calculating.

Assessing.

Elena Rossi stood near the fireplace, deep emerald silk against pale stone.

Refined.

Effortless.

When she saw Leo and Aria, her smile was controlled.

Warm.

But aware.

Alessandro Moretti approached them first.

Calm. Impeccable. Dangerous.

"Leonardo," he greeted smoothly.

"Father."

His gaze shifted to Aria.

"Miss Aria. I'm pleased you accepted."

"I appreciate the invitation," she replied evenly.

He studied her for a half-second too long.

"You look appropriate for the occasion."

Not a compliment.

A test.

"I dress according to environment," she replied softly.

A flicker of something passed through his eyes.

Interest.

Then-

"Come," Alessandro said. "You should greet Elena."

As if she hadn't already.

Strategic framing.

Elena stepped forward gracefully.

"You came," she said to Leo.

"I was invited."

Her eyes slid to Aria.

"I'm glad you did as well."

"Why wouldn't I?" Aria asked gently.

Elena's smile deepened slightly.

"Some people avoid discomfort."

"I don't," Aria replied.

Elena's gaze sharpened - just a little.

Alessandro watched silently.

Observing reactions like a chess master.

Dinner began.

Long table.

Strategic seating.

Elena placed on Leo's right.

Aria on his left.

Symbolism wasn't accidental.

Conversations drifted toward international expansion.

Legacy transitions.

Marriage alliances in global markets.

Subtle.

But not subtle.

One board member laughed lightly.

"Strong families strengthen through strategic unions."

Elena sipped her wine.

Alessandro glanced toward Leo.

"Compatibility simplifies succession."

Aria felt the shift.

There it was.

Public pressure.

Narrative building.

Leo's voice cut in calmly.

"Succession will be based on capability."

Silence.

Elena tilted her head slightly.

"Of course," she said smoothly. "And capability often aligns with shared vision."

Aria placed her glass down carefully.

"And shared respect," she added.

Several guests looked at her now.

Measured.

Elena's eyes met hers.

"And do you feel respected?" Elena asked gently.

The question wasn't innocent.

It was layered.

Aria held her gaze steadily.

"Respect isn't given in rooms like this," she said softly. "It's revealed."

A few quiet murmurs.

Alessandro leaned back slightly.

Studying her more carefully now.

Not dismissing.

Evaluating.

Midway through dinner, a slideshow began projecting Moretti expansion strategy.

Photos of past partnerships.

Corporate alliances.

Then-

A photo appeared.

Leo and Elena.

From years ago.

At a summit.

Professional.

Close.

The room stilled.

Aria didn't look at Leo.

Didn't look away either.

Elena's voice broke the silence lightly.

"That was Tokyo," she said. "A strong year."

"Yes," Leo replied evenly.

Alessandro spoke next.

"Some partnerships endure beyond contracts."

The implication was deliberate.

Aria inhaled slowly.

Then spoke clearly.

"Endurance depends on choice."

All eyes shifted again.

Alessandro's gaze sharpened.

"And you believe choice outweighs legacy?"

"I believe legacy evolves," Aria said calmly.

Elena's lips curved faintly.

"You're bold."

"I'm certain."

Silence fell again.

The air was no longer polite.

It was charged.

After dinner, guests dispersed into smaller clusters.

Elena approached Aria privately near the balcony doors.

"You handled that well," Elena said softly.

"I wasn't handling anything," Aria replied.

Elena studied her carefully.

"They're testing how long you can stand here."

"I know."

"And?"

Aria met her gaze evenly.

"I don't scare easily."

Elena's smile shifted slightly.

"Neither do I."

That wasn't threat.

It was information.

Across the room, Alessandro watched the two women.

Then he turned to Leo.

"You chose difficulty," Alessandro said quietly.

"I chose authenticity."

"You chose conflict."

Leo's gaze didn't waver.

"I chose her."

Alessandro's expression remained unreadable.

"Very well."

Not surrender.

Acknowledgment.

The game was escalating.

When Leo and Aria finally left the estate, the night air felt colder.

She didn't speak immediately.

He didn't either.

Once inside the car, he looked at her.

"You were perfect."

"I wasn't performing."

"I know."

She stared ahead.

"They wanted me to feel small."

"And?"

"I didn't."

His jaw tightened slightly.

"They won't stop."

"I don't expect them to."

Silence settled.

Then she turned to him.

"They wanted me to compare myself to her."

He held her gaze.

"Did you?"

A beat.

"No."

A faint smirk touched his lips.

"Good."

She looked out the window at the city lights.

"This isn't about Elena."

"No," he agreed. "It's about power."

And tonight-

Aria hadn't bowed.

But somewhere inside the estate-

Alessandro Moretti poured himself a drink.

And said quietly,

"She's stronger than anticipated."

Elena responded softly,

"Yes."

Alessandro's eyes darkened slightly.

"Then we apply real pressure."
