Chapter 3

Virell Tower – Day Four

The boy struck without warning.

Sera had just folded the stiff, hotel-pressed blanket on the designer couch when a sharp sting bloomed across her cheek. A tiny, furious hand. Open-palmed. Fast. She reeled back half a step—less from pain, more from the venom packed in the gesture.

He stood there—Damon’s son—with fists clenched and shoulders squared, mimicking some soldier he’d never met.

“You’re nothing,” he sneered, parroting the man who’d made him. “Daddy says you’re poison. He says I can hit you if you ever look at me.”

Sera took a slow breath, letting the air dull the heat in her skin. “You don’t know what you’re doing.”

“I hate you.”

“I know.”

He lunged again. Balled fists this time. Sera caught his wrists—gentle, but unyielding. “That’s enough.”

His face collapsed—not from hurt, but disbelief. She wasn’t playing the part. She wasn’t following the script.

Right on cue, the door swung open.

“Elijah!” Elira’s voice, shrill and lacquered in concern, sliced across the room like cut glass. “Get away from her!”

Two guards followed in her wake—postured, passive, practiced.

“He attacked me,” Sera said, calm as glass, releasing the boy’s wrists.

“He’s a child,” Elira snapped. “And you assaulted him!”

She stormed across the penthouse, floorboards clicking under her heels. Her slap was quick—fingers curved like jewelry turned weapon—and it landed on the same cheek the boy had struck.

The guards didn’t move. This wasn’t unexpected.

“You’ll regret that,” Sera said, voice barely a breath.

Elira leaned in, perfume choking the air between them. “Oh, will I?”

Her mask slipped.

“I know what Damon did,” she hissed. “He told me everything. The kidnapping? His idea. Paid top dollar to make it clean. You were the liability. Your patents. Your offshores. He wanted every piece of you—except you.”

Sera stayed still.

Elira’s lips curled. “You think you survived something. You didn’t. You were auctioned. And you were too naive to notice.”

There it was. The cut that went deepest. Damon hadn’t abandoned her. He’d erased her—purchased her disappearance like a stock option. Traded her pain for equity.

Sera’s fingers clenched.

“I built this empire from your bones,” Elira went on, proud now. “And no one even remembers your name. You’re not a phoenix, Sera. You’re ash.”

She snapped her fingers toward the door.

“Feed her.”

A tray waited there—stainless steel, dented at the rim. Dry pellets piled beside something wet and gray.

“Are you serious?” a housekeeper whispered from the hallway.

“I said feed her.”

One of the guards lifted the tray. The other hesitated, watching Sera with quiet unease.

She met his gaze. “You really want this to be the thing people remember you for?”

He flinched. But he didn’t stop.

“Hold her arms,” Elira barked. “Force it if you have to.”

As they stepped forward, Sera didn’t resist. She stood still. Silent. Eyes open—not with fear, but with precision.

She memorized the faces. The stench of the food. The thickness in the air. The exact pressure of humiliation.

It would become data.

And one day, she would use it to gut them all.

---

That night, the penthouse cameras flickered into static.

Sera sat on the cold marble floor of the bathroom, her knees drawn up, a small cut on her lip where her teeth had split skin. One wrist ached; her cheek had begun to swell.

She’d forced one bite down. Vomited it up in the sink.

She splashed water on her face. Breathed through the pain.

“Just one more day,” she whispered to the mirror.

Outside, the guards no longer spoke. The air was tight. Coiled. As if even they could smell the coming shift.

Damon hadn’t returned in forty-eight hours. Press junkets. IPO interviews. The world still thought he was brilliant.

Perfect timing.

---

3:00 a.m.

She waited for the corridor silence. Then she moved.

The server vault sat like a mausoleum at the end of the hall—an over-chilled room filled with humming racks and pulsing lights. Heat-sinked and unguarded.

No one thought she’d risk stepping inside barefoot, draped in a stolen maintenance jumpsuit she’d fished from a forgotten laundry chute. The cold bit instantly, biting through fabric to bone.

She shut the door behind her. Locked it from the inside.

Thirty minutes, she thought.

She unscrewed the thermostat panel using a broken hairpin, exposing the guts inside. Pulled out a device the size of a matchbook—Dominic’s transmitter, disguised as a humidity regulator.

She clicked it on.

A red LED blinked once.

The door slammed open behind her.

Damon.

He stood there holding a thick cable, not confused—furious.

“You think I wouldn’t notice?” he snapped, crossing the room like a blade. “Tampering with my servers? You stupid little bitch.”

She turned to run, but he was faster. The cable cracked across her back and she dropped with a gasp.

He yanked her by the collar, slammed her into a server rack. Her spine hit metal.

“You scare me?” he hissed. “You think Dominic Kael’s coming to save you now?”

She spat blood onto his shoes. “I don’t need saving.”

And that was the moment he broke.

Fists. Feet. Rage distilled to violence. He’d kept it buried for six years, and now it poured out like fire.

Sera didn’t scream. Didn’t cry.

She waited.

Because she knew what came next.

Just as her vision tunneled, just as his fist rose again—

The explosion hit.

Wood splintered. Metal shrieked. The server door blew off its hinges.

And a voice cut through the chaos.

Cool. Measured.

“I warned you, Sera. You should’ve called me sooner.”

---

Dominic Kael.

His silhouette stood in the wreckage, a trench coat swept open by the pressure change. Behind him, masked operatives moved like ghosts—efficient, armed, merciless.

Virell’s security was already neutralized.

Damon stumbled backward, hands soaked in blood. “What the hell is this?”

Dominic didn’t look at him. His eyes locked on Sera—bruised, broken, breathing.

His voice dropped to a growl.

“Pull his teeth out.”

The operatives advanced.

Sera closed her eyes.

Damon’s screams echoed off the server walls like music played in reverse.

Dominic knelt beside her, cradling her gently in his arms.

“I’m fine,” she rasped.

“You look like hell.”

She managed a cracked smile. “Good. Let him see what he made.”

They left Damon howling behind them.

As the elevator descended, Dominic’s grip around her tightened.

“Next stop?” he asked.

Sera rested her head against his chest.

“Hell,” she whispered. “Let’s burn it all down.”
