Chapter 2

Virell Tower – 88th Floor

The penthouse was exquisite. Floor-to-ceiling windows framed the skyline like a still life of greed and power. Italian marble gleamed beneath her feet. Crystal decanters lined a brass bar cart beside a white velvet chaise. Everything was curated, perfect, lifeless.

Sera hated it instantly.

She knew what it was. Not a welcome. Not comfort.

A cage.

Two guards stationed at the elevator doors. One outside the hallway, another by the main bedroom door. They didn’t speak unless spoken to, but their eyes followed her like prison cameras—never blinking, always recording.

The suite itself had everything: state-of-the-art security, biometric locks, hidden surveillance tucked behind polished art panels. There was no phone, no tablet. No way out.

She was expected to wait.

Wait until Damon’s IPO launched. Wait until he gave her “permission” to disappear. Wait until he decided she was worth discarding.

But Sera had never been the waiting kind.

---

The next morning, the suite’s doors opened without warning.

In came Elira Voss, tall and feline in a tailored cream dress, pushing a sleek stroller and flanked by a nanny and a bodyguard. Her heels clicked softly on the marble like applause for herself.

“Good morning, darling,” Elira said sweetly, voice dripping poison.

Sera stood still. Her arms were crossed, face unreadable.

Elira turned to the child in the stroller—a boy, no more than five, with dark curls and hazel eyes too sharp for his age.

“Go ahead,” Elira cooed. “Say hello.”

The boy looked up at Sera with disgust that didn’t belong on a face so young.

“You’re the leech,” he said flatly. “Daddy said you’re nothing.”

Sera blinked.

Elira smiled brightly. “Isn’t he articulate for his age? We’ve worked hard on his diction.”

Sera’s voice, when it came, was ice in velvet. “Teaching a child to hate. Impressive.”

Elira leaned in. “Just a little preview. You see, Damon doesn’t want a scandal. But if you force one, I will make you the most hated woman in Manhattan. I will paint you as a manipulator, a fake, an opportunist who faked her death to cash in. One whisper, and every magazine from Vogue to Vice will gut you alive. And my son—our son—will testify. You were cruel. Violent. Mad.”

She touched Sera’s cheek with a manicured nail. “I’ve already drafted the statement.”

Sera didn’t flinch. “And when I leave, what will you be? The woman who couldn’t even compete with a ghost?”

The temperature in the room dropped.

Elira stepped back, jaw tight. “You’re not leaving until we’re done with you.”

Then she turned on her heels and walked out, dragging the boy behind her.

The door slammed.

The silence that followed wasn’t peace.

It was war.

---

Later that evening, a manila envelope was slid under her door.

Inside: the divorce agreement.

A paltry settlement. $150,000. A single page about a “mutual decision” to part ways quietly. No admission of wrongdoing. No trace of the years they’d stolen from her.

Sera read every line. Then picked up the pen and signed her name in perfect, measured cursive.

And smiled.

Outward surrender. But inside, the plan had already begun.

She walked to the climate control panel beside the fireplace and unscrewed the casing with a hidden pin from her belt. Behind the panel, nestled in the wiring, was a node the guards would miss: a tiny transmitter Dominic had slipped into her coat lining.

She activated it with a touch.

A pulse—silent, encrypted—shot through the building’s systems.

She had just connected to the Syndicate.

---

The next day blurred into control and cruelty.

Breakfast came cold. The guards delivered it wordlessly. Dinner was the same.

The windows didn’t open. The doors didn’t budge.

Sera stretched twice daily, memorized guard rotations, and studied the internal patterns of the hallway lights, trying to trace the timing of surveillance loops. Her training with Dominic returned like muscle memory: pattern, exploit, infiltrate.

But it wasn’t enough.

Because on the third day, they escalated.

---

It started with a small, steel bowl.

Delivered at noon, along with a tray of dry pellets.

Dog food.

One of the staff—a timid housekeeper with her hair in a tight bun—couldn’t meet Sera’s eyes.

Sera stared at the food.

The guard stepped closer. “Ms. Voss insists.”

She looked at the woman who set it down. “And you?”

The housekeeper whispered, barely audible, “They’ll fire me if I refuse. Or worse.”

Sera said nothing. She picked up the spoon.

And ate.

She didn’t flinch. She didn’t cry. She chewed and swallowed and smiled.

She understood humiliation. It wasn’t new.

But this time, it was ammunition.

---

That night, she sat on the edge of the bed, staring out the window, watching the skyline flicker like static. Her hands rested in her lap, palms up, revealing callouses that hadn't faded since the Balkans.

She closed her eyes.

Beneath the surface, her calm seethed with fury.

This wasn’t about Damon anymore. Or Elira.

This was about erasure. They had rewritten her life. Painted her out of her own story. Built their empire on her silence.

And now they thought they could control her return.

They didn’t realize she hadn’t come back to ask for justice.

She came to burn the ground they stood on.

---

Elsewhere, in a penthouse across Midtown, Dominic Kael sat before a dozen screens showing grainy surveillance feeds.

He watched Sera lean back in her chair, eyes glowing in the dark.

A man beside him asked, “Is she ready?”

Dominic smiled faintly. “She’s never been more ready.”

He picked up a phone.

And gave the order: “Prepare to breach in forty-eight hours.”
