Chapter 4

I stared blankly at the stack of legal documents Damien was holding out, my entire body trembling as if the floor beneath me had caved in.

“Go on. Sign it,” he said again, his voice as hollow as his expression—detached, like the years we spent together had meant nothing more than a business arrangement that had finally run its course.

I reached for the papers with a shaking hand—but instead of signing, I ripped them in half without hesitation. The sharp tear sliced through the heavy silence in the room.

Damien’s jaw tensed ever so slightly, but instead of lashing out, he merely smiled—a slow, smug curve of his lips. As though he had anticipated this reaction. As though it amused him.

Without a word, he pulled out a sleek black card and let it fall onto the glass coffee table between us.

“There’s a million dollars loaded on that. Consider it your exit bonus,” he said coolly.

Exit bonus.

I stared at the card as bile rose in my throat. As if I were a disposable employee, someone he was finally laying off after exhausting her purpose.

Fury ignited in my chest like gasoline meeting flame. Without thinking, I raised my hand and struck him across the face.

The sound echoed sharply through the room.

Damien barely reacted. He turned his head back slowly, his hand brushing the spot where I hit him, as if curious more than hurt.

“Feeling better?” he asked with a low, condescending murmur.

I snatched the card and threw it back at him. It hit his chest and bounced to the floor.

“Burn in hell, Damien.”

His smile widened, a twisted delight in his eyes. “I already live there, darling.”

Then he leaned in, so close I could feel his breath.

“Luca’s already picked Sophie,” he said, voice dripping with venomous triumph. “He calls her ‘Mom’ now.”

A chill crept up my spine.

Just then, the kitchen door creaked open. And there they were.

Sophie. And my son.

She walked in gracefully, hand in hand with Luca—who was clutching an enormous robot toy, his little face lit up with joy.

My stomach turned.

“Thank you, Mommy Sophie!” he chirped, wrapping his arms around her waist with affection.

I felt my throat tighten, my voice trapped in my chest.

“Sweetheart… it’s me. Mommy…” I managed to whisper, the words catching like thorns.

Luca turned toward me. But instead of the wide smile I had hoped for, he only looked mildly puzzled.

“Why do you look mad?” he asked, tilting his head. “Mom Sophie got me this super cool robot! She’s the best!”

Sophie let out a soft laugh and bent down to brush a loose strand of hair behind her ear. “All I want is for him to be happy,” she said sweetly, her voice directed at Luca—but her eyes locked onto mine.

Then she added, with a faux-apologetic smile, “Don’t look so upset, Isabelle. He’s just telling the truth. I’ve been the one actually here for him lately.”

Luca nodded eagerly. “She plays with me. She cooks with me. She makes Daddy laugh. You should sign those papers so we can be a happy family.”

My vision blurred.

And then—before I could even process it—Sophie turned to Damien, wrapped her arms around his neck, and kissed him.

Right in front of me.

Their lips met slowly, deliberately, like they were savoring the destruction of everything I had once believed in.

Luca giggled. “They’re in love! See, Mommy? Mommy Sophie and Daddy belong together!”

Something inside me shattered.

I couldn’t move. Couldn’t speak. I stood frozen, witnessing my worst nightmare—my husband, my sister, and my son—pretending I didn’t exist. Like I had already been replaced. Erased.

It couldn’t be happening. But it was.

When the kiss ended, Damien turned toward me with a glint of satisfaction in his eyes. He picked up another copy of the divorce papers from his bag and placed them on the table.

“Let’s not drag this out, Isabelle. Be reasonable and sign.”

And then Luca looked up at me with those pleading, innocent eyes.

“Please, Mommy. Sign it, okay? So everyone can be happy again.”

Happy.

They already were.

The picture was complete: the new family, the perfect child, the dazzling ring, the mansion I used to call mine.

I took a step back. Then another. The room felt too small. The air too thin.

“I… I need some time alone,” I managed to say, my voice barely audible.

I turned and fled.

My feet carried me down the hallway. I slammed the bedroom door shut and collapsed against it, sliding to the floor like a crumpled page. And then I broke.

Sobs tore from me, silent and agonizing, wracking my entire body. I curled into myself on the cold hardwood floor, clutching my arms around my knees as if I could somehow hold myself together.

How had it come to this?

I’d lost everything. My marriage. My child. My family. Even my name felt stolen from me.

Why wasn’t I enough?

Why was I the one bleeding, while they smiled and kissed like the world was theirs?

My temples throbbed, the pain in my head now a violent roar. The agony in my heart rivaled it. I didn’t know how long I stayed there before I blindly reached for my phone.

I only had one name left to turn to.

I typed it in, hands shaking.

The line rang twice before a familiar, steady voice answered.

“Isabelle?”

The moment I heard his voice, the tears returned.

“Marcus…” My voice cracked. “I—I need you.”

There was silence on the other end. Then a sharp breath.

“What happened?”

“It’s Damien. And Luca… they don’t want me anymore.” I hiccuped between words. “I have nothing left, Marcus. I’m all alone.”

“No,” he said firmly. “You’re not. You have me, Isabelle. I’m still here. And I’m not letting you go through this by yourself.”

I bit back a sob.

“Come to me,” he continued. “I’ll get you out of there. I’ll help you disappear, if that’s what you want.”

Then he hesitated. His tone shifted.

“There’s more. I didn’t want to tell you like this, but you need to know.”

I sniffled. “What is it?”

“Our hospital just launched a new clinical trial,” he said. “It’s experimental. It’s for stage four brain cancer. It’s a long shot—but it’s the best chance we’ve got.”

My blood ran cold.

“You knew?” I whispered.

“I suspected,” he replied gently. “I came across your scans a few weeks ago. I knew something wasn’t right. You’ve been hiding it from everyone.”

I swallowed hard. My chest burned.

“Please,” Marcus said softly. “Let me help you. Let me be there for you, Isabelle. You’ve carried this burden long enough. You deserve a chance to live. And to get away from all this.”

I gripped the phone tighter.

For the first time in weeks, I felt something flicker inside me.

Hope.

Resolve.

Escape.

I closed my eyes, took a long, deep breath, and whispered the words that sealed my fate.

“I’m coming, Marcus.”
