Chapter 5

The house was quiet. Too quiet. The kind of silence that didn’t bring peace, only a hollow echo of what used to be.

They were gone. Damien. Sophie. Even Luca. The three of them had packed their lives into designer luggage and moved into their grand new mansion—a pristine estate built on betrayal, laughter, and a future that no longer had a space for me. Not even a footnote.

They didn’t say goodbye. They didn’t leave a note.

And oddly, I didn’t cry. Not this time.

Maybe I had finally reached my limit. Maybe whatever pieces of my heart were left had already turned to stone. As I sat on the bare couch in what used to be our living room, staring at the freshly retyped divorce agreement I had drawn up myself, I felt it—a shift.

There was no longer anything left to fight for. Not the marriage, not my child’s love, not the illusion of family. I had begged, I had bled, I had broken—and still, they walked away.

So I made a choice.

I would vanish.

And one day, when the name Isabelle Navarro was nothing but a distant memory, I would return—as someone unrecognizable. As someone they would regret ever crossing.

With Marcus’s quiet support, I moved quickly and discreetly. I signed the final divorce papers and submitted them, refusing even a cent of Damien’s fortune. I didn’t want his money. I didn’t want his name. I didn’t want anything that had his scent on it.

What I did want was a clean slate. A rebirth.

Through a discreet contact Marcus knew from his hospital network, I was introduced to someone who could help me disappear—for good.

What they provided was morbid, yet necessary.

An unclaimed body. A woman close enough in build and age to pass for me. Another forgotten soul society had long ignored.

I dressed her in one of my signature dresses—a deep blue silk piece that Damien once said made my eyes glow. I slipped my wedding ring onto her lifeless hand. And finally, I pulled from my jewelry box the one item that had truly meant something—my delicate gold necklace. The first gift Damien ever gave me, back when he still pretended to love me.

I held it for a moment, memories slamming into me like waves.

“Mommy, is this necklace magic?” Luca’s small voice from years ago echoed in my ears.

I had laughed. “No, baby. Daddy gave it to me. That’s why it’s special.”

“Then it’s definitely magic,” he’d grinned, climbing onto my lap, wrapping his little arms around my neck.

But now, those arms clung to someone else. Someone who didn’t earn them.

I closed the clasp around the corpse’s neck, swallowing the rising grief. That woman lying still on the bed wasn’t a stranger anymore.

She was Isabelle Navarro.

And tonight, she would die.

Just before everything went up in flames, I hesitated at the foot of the staircase. My phone trembled in my grip as I scrolled to Damien’s contact and hit dial.

Ring.

Ring.

Ring.

Voicemail.

Figures. I wasn’t surprised. My mother had already filled in the gaps when she rang earlier with a saccharine tone that barely hid her cruelty.

“Oh, sweetheart… I should’ve told you sooner. Damien, Sophie, and little Luca… they flew to Paris early this morning.”

Paris. Their fresh start. Their dream vacation. Their honeymoon and my son’s first international trip—all without me.

I called again. And again.

No answer.

So I did the only thing left. I sent a message. The last words Damien would ever receive from me.

To Damien Navarro:

Thank you for teaching me what real pain feels like. For proving I was nothing more than a placeholder in your life. For showing me just how easy it was for you to walk away.

Best wishes on your new life. I truly hope Sophie brings you more joy than I ever did.

Goodbye, Damien.

And with that, I hit send.

The final nail in the coffin.

I lit the fire myself.

It took only moments for the house to catch. The flames spread fast, hungry and furious—like the rage that had consumed me for months. The smoke curled up into the night sky as if it were taking my screams with it.

Outside, hidden beneath shadows and the weight of what I had done, I watched the home I once built with love burn down to ash.

These walls had echoed with Luca’s laughter. I could still hear his voice from the past.

“Mommy! Watch me!”

“Mommy, can I sleep in your bed?”

“I love you, Mommy. You’re my best friend.”

Now he whispered those words to Sophie.

Now he loved her more.

I felt my heart ache again, a raw, aching emptiness inside my chest—but I forced it down. I couldn’t afford feelings anymore. Not in the life I was about to create.

By the time the firefighters arrived, it was over.

There was nothing left to save.

And just like that, Isabelle Navarro ceased to exist.

Damien's pov

A strange tension curled in my stomach—uneasy and sharp.

Before I could figure out what it meant, Sophie grabbed the remote and flicked on the TV.

The reporter’s voice rang out from the screen:

“Isabelle Navarro, former wife of CEO Damien Navarro, has been found dead following a devastating house fire.”
