She Reported the Grandma Who Raised Her Son for Free

Chapter 2

2: 2

The next day, Grandma Bernice picked the kids up from school and walked each of them home, one by one. But she didn't bring a single one back to our place.

Piers wouldn't go inside. He stood there crying, calling out for Grandma Bernice.

She smoothed a hand over his head.

"There, there. From now on, ask your mom to come get you a little earlier."

When she got home, she pulled the cartoon dinner set out from under the coffee table.

One piece at a time, she wiped each plate clean and stacked them neatly in the very back of the cupboard.

She'd bought that set just for Rolf.

Five years ago. Little dinosaurs printed on every piece.

When Mom got home from work and heard the whole story, she slammed her bag onto the couch.

"Does Meg Chavez have any shame at all?"

"Freezing cold out, and she's running a clothing stand on the sidewalk, can't make it in time to pick up her own kid."

"Rolf's crouched all alone under the school fence, waiting until past eight at night."

"His face all chapped raw from the cold."

"Your grandmother happened to walk by, saw him, and brought him home to eat!"

"Then Meg chases her all the way to our door, bawling, wiping snot everywhere, begging your grandmother to lend a hand."

"Says how hard it is being a single mom."

"Your grandmother's soft-hearted. The very next day she started picking that boy up."

"Brought him home, fed him, helped with his homework. Five years!"

The more Mom talked, the angrier she got.

"You do a good deed and the dog turns around and bites you!"

Meg treated her precious son like some little crown prince. What she was really afraid of was other kids siphoning off her boy's share of the attention.

Before, Grandma Bernice only watched Rolf. Everything revolved around him.

Then Piers and the other single-parent kids started coming too.

Grandma's attention got split. Rolf wasn't the only one anymore.

This whole bike-grabbing, kid-falls-down incident was just the fuse.

She used it as an excuse to blow everyone else out of the picture, so Grandma Bernice would go back to serving only her boy.

Clever.

I said to Grandma, "Grandma, tomorrow I'll take you around the senior center. They've got a cooking class, a fabric-crafts class. Pick whichever one you like."

She thought about it. "Those kids…"

"You just take care of yourself," I said.

I cut her off. "Around four-thirty, when school lets out, don't be home."

She was quiet for a moment, then nodded.

That night, the neighborhood group chat blew up.

Meg was throwing a twelfth birthday party for her son and posted a dozen videos.

A three-tier cake, balloons everywhere, Rolf in a little suit blowing out the candles.

She'd captioned it: "Even a single mom has to lift her child up. Can't let him suffer the slightest bit."

Right after came another one: "Everyone, can someone pick Rolf up tomorrow?"

"I really can't get away from the store."

The chat went dead silent for a solid three minutes.

Then someone finally replied, "Meg, why not ask Grandma Bernice to get him for you?"

"Oh, right. You reported her. Guess she's not doing pickups anymore?"

Meg fired back instantly, "That was my civic duty. For everyone's good!"

"This is asking a neighbor for a favor. Totally different."

Another line popped up: "Ingrate."

"Who said that? Come out and say it to my face!"

Meg sent a string of voice messages, one after another. "You're all ganging up on a single mom!"

"What, can't have a son of your own, so you're jealous I've got one?"

Nobody responded.

Finally her tone softened. "I know none of you lifts a finger without something in it for you."

"Whoever picks up my kid gets twenty percent off everything in my store. VIP treatment!"

Still no one answered.

It wasn't until the middle of the night that one woman posted, "Meg, quit throwing a fit in the group."

"Grandma Bernice helped you out for five years, and you turned right around and reported her."

"Who'd dare touch anything to do with your family now?"

"One bad day and you'd report them for abusing your son too. Who could carry that kind of risk?"

Meg completely lost it. "Fine! So you're all teaming up to bully me, is that it?"

"I've got screenshots! Tomorrow I'm reporting every one of you for defamation!"

I stared at my phone screen and laughed.

This woman really was digging her own grave.

Good.

Sometimes a heart has to go cold all the way through before you can see clearly that some people never deserved your kindness in the first place.
