Chapter 3

3: 3

Meg spent a whole week shouting into the group chat, and nobody took the bait.

Every day, Rolf squatted alone on the curb.

Sometimes he'd be outside gnawing on a piece of bread, the cheapest kind.

When Rolf saw me, he didn't say hello. He rolled his eyes instead.

He'd completely forgotten I used to help him with his homework and buy him snacks.

Fine by me. Saved me the trouble of feeling sorry for him.

Then one evening, a storm broke.

At eight o'clock, from upstairs, Grandma Bernice saw Meg finally come tearing into the complex on her electric scooter at that hour.

Rolf, on the back seat, was soaked through, hair plastered to his forehead, lips gone blue.

She hadn't even thrown a rain poncho over the kid.

Not long after, the doorbell rang.

I opened the door. Meg stood there gripping Rolf, the boy's face flushed red from coughing.

She smiled like nothing had happened at all.

"Ms. Whitney, Rolf got caught in the rain and he's a little sick. Could you make him a bowl of hot ginger tea?"

"Let him sleep here tonight. I've got a shipment coming into the store and I need to be there for it."

I just stood there, stunned.

She'd reported my grandmother. She'd thrown her fit in the group chat.

And now she waltzed over like nothing happened and dumped the kid on us?

Grandma Bernice came out of the kitchen and looked at Rolf for a moment.

The boy's nose was running all the way down to his chin.

She handed him a tissue, then stepped back.

"Ms. Chavez, when you said I was running an illegal operation, I accepted it."

"I took the penalty too."

"And now you're trying to push me into another pit!"

"I can't touch this child anymore. Take him home."

Meg's face changed.

"Ms. Whitney! You can't just stand by and let him suffer!"

"Rolf's coughing this badly!"

"I'm a single mother running a store and raising a kid on my own. What's so wrong with lending me a hand?"

"That was before."

Grandma Bernice answered.

"Now I'm afraid of being reported."

Meg's mouth twitched, then she slid into a wounded expression.

"Ms. Whitney, are you still hung up on that? I already told you, it was a friend who reported you!"

"Besides, it's not like I ever made you work for free. Rolf kept you company, gave you someone to talk to. Didn't that make you happy too?"

I couldn't listen to another word of it.

"Meg, so now it was a friend who reported her?"

"Go on, tell me. Which friend?"

Meg choked on that, then switched angles.

"You've got nothing to do these days anyway, right?"

"You're over seventy. A chance to earn some good karma, and you won't even take it!"

Grandma Bernice turned to go back inside.

"If the boy's sick, take him to the hospital. Don't waste time."

Meg froze in the doorway, and the way she looked at my grandmother turned cold all the way through.

"Bernice Whitney, you put on such a kind act before. Now your real face is showing, isn't it?"

"Selfish! Heartless! Letting a child suffer!"

"If Rolf ends up with some lasting condition, I'm not done with you!"

I shut the door.

"You don't leave, I'm calling the police."

She dragged Rolf down the stairs, cursing filth the whole way.

The boy stumbled, yanked along behind her.

I knew it hurt my grandmother.

But this cut went deep. Too deep.

The next day I went to the library as usual to study for my teaching certification exam.

I'd made a copy of Grandma Bernice's lesson notes to bring along, every page crammed with forty years of her teaching insights.

When I turned to the page on "counseling students through their worries," all I could see was the look Rolf had thrown back over his shoulder the night before.

Then, a few days later, the education office called again.

This time it came straight to my cell phone.

"Is this Rex Chavez? Someone has filed a report that you cheated on your teaching certification exam."

"They say you have poor character, that you're selfish and cold, that you caused a child to fall ill, and that you're unfit to teach."

"We need you to cooperate with the investigation."

Holding the phone, my mind went blank first, and then it detonated.

Aside from Meg, no one knew I'd been studying for my certification lately.

Yesterday she'd seen the review materials spread out on my desk from the doorway.

One glance. That was all she needed to fabricate a report.

The same playbook.

It was the same thing she'd done when she reported my grandmother. Cook up a charge first, then shove the paperwork at everyone, true or false, and peel a layer of skin off you before you know it.

Fine. Bring it.

I dug the library keycard logs out of the drawer, along with screenshots of my study sessions and check-in dates.

And the footage from last night, the complex's security cameras catching her standing at our door making her scene.

You thought reporting people came free, Meg?

This time I'll show you exactly what it costs when someone burns every bridge they've got.
