Chapter 3

The tension in the basement thickened, wrapping around us like the oppressive darkness in the corners of the room.

Ethan’s hand hovered over the doorknob, his knuckles pale with tension, as Amelia’s smirk grew. My breath caught as she lifted the key, dangling it between her fingers like a forbidden fruit.

“Amelia, don’t,” I pleaded, my voice barely above a whisper.

She tilted her head, studying me with a look that was equal parts pity and malice. “He deserves to know, Vicky. You both do.”

“Know what?” Ethan demanded, his patience fraying. He stepped closer to Amelia, his eyes darting between the key and the door. “You’re both acting like I’ve walked into some kind of horror movie.”

“Maybe you have,” Amelia murmured, her voice almost teasing.

“Enough!” My voice rang out, startling even me. Amelia paused, her brow lifting slightly in surprise. I stepped forward, planting myself firmly between her and Ethan. My heart was racing, my thoughts a tangled web of fear and guilt.

“What are you hiding, Vicky?” Ethan asked again, his tone gentler now, though his suspicion hadn’t waned.

I swallowed hard, the weight of the secrets I’d carried for years pressing down on me like a vise. The mansion—my inheritance—was more than just an old, decrepit house. It was alive, and it hungered.

“That door,” I began, my voice trembling, “leads to a part of the house that shouldn’t exist.”

“What the hell does that mean?” Ethan asked, his brow furrowing.

Amelia stepped closer, her voice cutting through my hesitation. “It means this house is a trap. A maze. And the thing behind that door?” She paused, her smirk faltering for the first time. “It’s the heart of it.”

“Amelia!” I snapped. “Stop.”

“No, Vicky.” Her eyes locked onto mine, fierce and unyielding. “He deserves to know what he’s gotten himself into.”

Ethan crossed his arms, glaring at both of us. “Someone had better start making sense. Now.”

I hesitated, the weight of their stares pressing down on me. Finally, I relented, my voice barely audible.

“This house has… rules,” I began. “It’s been in my family for generations. Each owner is given a set of… instructions. Things you must do to keep it… placated.”

Ethan’s frown deepened. “Placated?”

Amelia interjected, her voice sharp. “She means fed.”

Ethan’s eyes widened. “Fed? Fed what?”

I shook my head, panic rising. “It’s not what you think. It’s not alive in the way we are, but it’s… aware. And it’s dangerous.”

“So you’ve been… what? Feeding people to this house?” Ethan’s voice was incredulous, a mixture of disbelief and horror.

“No!” I cried. “I would never. But there are… sacrifices. Small ones. Things it takes to keep the… balance.”

Amelia’s laugh was bitter. “Small? Tell that to the people who’ve disappeared here.”

Ethan’s gaze snapped to her. “What people?”

I glared at Amelia, my hands balling into fists. “You don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“Don’t I?” she shot back. “You think I didn’t do my research before I came here? This place is a black hole, Vicky. People vanish. Workers. Neighbors. Visitors.”

“Enough,” I said, my voice breaking. “You don’t understand. None of you do.”

“Then make us understand,” Ethan said, his voice steady but cold.

The silence stretched, broken only by the faint creak of the house settling around us. Finally, I took a deep breath and spoke.

“This house is a guardian of something old. Something powerful. My family’s been its caretaker for centuries. It’s protected us, made us wealthy beyond reason. But it comes with a price.”

”There’s something behind that door… something my grandmother warned me never to disturb. It’s the source of the house’s power, but it’s also its curse.” I said.

Ethan’s face hardened, his disbelief warring with curiosity. “And you expect me to just accept that?”

“No,” I said quietly. “I don’t. But I need you to trust me. If you open that door… there’s no coming back.”

“What happens if we don’t open it?” he asked.

Amelia’s expression darkened. “That’s the thing,” she said. “The house might not give us a choice.”
