Chapter 4

"Vicky, don’t—!"

Amelia’s voice was a sharp hiss, but it was already too late.

The basement door gave way with a violent creak, its old wood groaning like it had been waiting to be set free. I stumbled inside, my heart racing, pulse pounding in my ears.

The scent of dust, mildew, and something else—something metallic—choked me. My breath caught. The room before me was shrouded in darkness, with only a single bulb swinging lazily above, casting long, shifting shadows.

“What the hell is this place?” Ethan’s voice trembled, just loud enough for me to hear from the top of the stairs.

His words sliced through the eerie quiet, and I forced myself to move deeper into the basement. I had to find out what I was really dealing with. The walls were lined with shelves, some broken, others stacked with jars filled with strange, amber liquids.

My fingers brushed against an old, cracked mirror in the corner, a faint flicker of movement reflected back at me. I spun, heart hammering, but there was nothing there. I shook my head. It was just the fear.

I approached the far wall, my eyes widening as I saw them—ancient symbols etched into the stone, some half-erased by time, others still sharp and deliberate. They pulsed with an energy I couldn’t explain, sending a cold shiver straight through my bones.

"Amelia... you need to tell me what’s going on."

The sound of footsteps behind me made me freeze, but I didn’t turn. I couldn’t. Something in the air had shifted. A weight that hadn’t been there before. Something was waking up.

“It’s too late for explanations, Vicky.” Amelia’s voice was low, almost a whisper now. She stepped into the doorway, her silhouette framed in the dim light. Her eyes were wide, unblinking, as she stared at the symbols. “You’ve awoken it.”

Her words hit me like a slap, and I felt the ground beneath me tremble. Panic clawed at my chest, but I couldn’t show it—not now, not when I needed to keep my head. I turned slowly, keeping my gaze locked with hers.

“What did we wake up, Amelia?”

She took a step back, shaking her head slowly. “Something ancient... Something you should never have touched.”

Just then, the floor beneath us groaned, a deep, rumbling noise that seemed to come from the very bowels of the earth. I felt my stomach drop. A sharp, piercing screech rang out, like metal on stone. And then—everything stopped.

“It’s happening, isn’t it?” Ethan’s voice was barely audible as he stood frozen in the doorway. The panic was thick in the air now, suffocating.

I looked at him, my heart racing. His eyes were wide, scared. I could see it now—the fear that I’d been hiding for so long. We were in too deep.

Suddenly, the basement door slammed shut behind me with a deafening crack. The sound echoed in the small, confined space, a bone-rattling roar that sent my pulse into overdrive.

“Vicky!”

I whirled around, but the room was different now. The shadows were darker, more alive. The air thickened as though something—someone—was breathing down my neck.

My chest tightened, and I grabbed at the door handle, desperate to escape, but it wouldn’t budge. I pushed harder, pulling, trying to force it open, but the lock was sealed.

“No, no, no!” My voice cracked as panic surged through me. I banged my fists against the door, but the wood only groaned in response.

Amelia’s cold gaze met mine. “I warned you.”

The floor rumbled again, and the air grew colder. Then came a whisper—a voice that seemed to come from the shadows themselves.

"You're not leaving."
