Chapter 2

“Amelia, what are you doing here?”

The words slipped out sharper than I intended. She stood in the doorway, framed by the stormy night behind her, clutching a soaked trench coat to her chest.

“I had to come, Vicky.” Her voice wavered, but her gaze was steady. “You need help. This house…” She glanced past me, her eyes darting as if something might leap from the shadows. “This house isn’t what you think.”

Ethan appeared behind me, his frown deepening. “You mean to just… show up unannounced? Convenient timing.”

“Ethan,” I warned, but Amelia’s lips curved into a faint smile.

“It’s alright,” she said, stepping inside. “I’d be suspicious too.” Her boots left muddy imprints on the pristine marble floor. “But trust me. You’re going to want me here.”

Something about her calmness unsettled me. Amelia, my best friend since college, had always been impulsive but warm. Now, she seemed… off.

“How did you even find me?” I asked.

“That doesn’t matter,” she replied, shrugging off her coat. Her movements were slow, deliberate, like someone calculating their next step. “Let’s just say, I know more than you think.”

Ethan crossed his arms, leaning against the doorframe. “Like what?”

Amelia’s eyes flicked to him, then back to me. “Like how this place feels alive, doesn’t it? Like it’s watching.”

“That’s ridiculous,” Ethan scoffed, but his tone faltered.

Amelia smirked, brushing past me toward the grand staircase. “Is it?” She trailed her fingers along the banister, her gaze wandering. “You feel it too, don’t you, Vicky?”

I hated how her words lodged in my chest. Because I did feel it. The oppressive weight of unseen eyes, the cold that seeped into my bones no matter how many layers I wore.

“Amelia,” I said, following her up the stairs, “what are you really doing here?”

She stopped abruptly, turning to face me. Her expression softened, her voice dropping to a whisper. “I promised your grandmother I’d look after you.”

My breath hitched. “What are you talking about?”

“You never told me about her,” Ethan interjected, his voice edged with suspicion.

“I didn’t think I needed to,” I shot back. “She died years ago.”

“She was important to me too,” Amelia said, her tone almost pleading. “She trusted me. And she left me this.”

From her pocket, she pulled out a worn, leather-bound journal. My heart sank as she handed it to me. The initials M.L. were embossed on the cover.

“This is impossible,” I whispered, my fingers trembling.

“It’s not,” Amelia said firmly. “Open it.”

I flipped through the pages, the familiar handwriting of my grandmother tugging at buried memories. But then, a cryptic entry caught my eye:

*Amelia saw it all. Don’t trust her.*

My hands went cold as the journal slipped from my grasp.

Amelia bent down to retrieve it, her fingers brushing mine. Her touch was ice. “I can explain,” she said, her tone eerily calm.

“Explain what?” My voice cracked as I backed away. “That my grandmother thought you were dangerous? That you’ve been lying to me?”

“Vicky, listen to me,” Amelia urged, stepping closer. “Your grandmother didn’t understand everything. She was scared. She didn’t know what I was protecting you from.”

“Protecting me?” I echoed, the words tasting bitter. “From what?”

Ethan moved to my side, his presence grounding me. “Yeah, Amelia. From what?”

Her eyes darted to him, a flicker of annoyance crossing her face. “You wouldn’t believe me if I told you.”

“Try me,” I said, my voice firmer than I felt.

She sighed, running a hand through her damp hair. “This house isn’t just haunted. It’s alive. And it’s hungry.”

Ethan let out a sharp laugh, but it lacked humor. “You expect us to believe that?”

“You don’t have to believe me,” Amelia snapped.

“But you’ve felt it, haven’t you? The way the air shifts, the way the walls creak even when there’s no wind? This place is feeding off you, Vicky. And it won’t stop until there’s nothing left.”

A chill swept through me, and I wrapped my arms around myself. “Why should I trust anything you say?”

Amelia’s expression hardened. “Because I’m the only one who can save you.”

Before I could respond, the lights flickered, and a low, guttural sound echoed from somewhere deep within the house. The floor beneath us trembled.

Ethan grabbed my hand. “What the hell was that?”

Amelia’s eyes narrowed. “It’s starting.”

“What’s starting?” I demanded, my voice rising in panic.

She turned to me, her expression grim. “The house knows I’m here. And it’s not happy.”

The sound grew louder, a deep, resonant hum that seemed to vibrate through my chest. The chandelier above us swayed, its crystals clinking together like discordant wind chimes.

“We need to move,” Amelia said, grabbing my arm. “Now.”

Ethan yanked me back. “You don’t get to order her around.”

“Ethan, stop,” I said, my voice shaking. “Something’s wrong. We need to go.”

He hesitated, his jaw tightening, but he nodded. “Fine. But I’m not letting her out of my sight.”

Amelia rolled her eyes but didn’t argue. She led us down the staircase, her movements quick and purposeful. The hum followed us, growing louder with each step.

When we reached the foyer, the front door slammed shut with a deafening bang. I jumped, my heart pounding.

“It won’t let us leave,” Amelia muttered, her voice barely audible.

“What do you mean it won’t let us leave?” Ethan demanded, his eyes wild.

“Exactly what I said,” she snapped. “This house is alive, and it doesn’t want us to leave.”

The walls seemed to close in, the shadows deepening. I clutched Ethan’s arm, my mind racing. “What do we do?”

Amelia turned to me, her expression resolute. “We fight."
